  1. hi. im planning on building my own PC soon, and since Mandrake here is on a separate hard drive, i decided to just transfer the HD from this PC to the new one. i guess Mandrake can reconfigure to suit the brand new hardware, but is there anything else i should know before attempting this? like hardware incompatibilities, problems w/the kernel (like ive read that the 2.6 kernels can only support up to like 512 MB of RAM, and you have to do something to get it to support more.), things i need to do before ripping the hard drive out of my system such as backup, editing conf files and the like? here are the expected specs of the new PC: Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz 1 GB PC333 DDR RAM (in the form of 2x 512 MB sticks, generic brand...cheaper) ASUS P4P800-VM Motherboard Inno3D GeForce FX5700 128MB LiteON 16x/48x DVD-ROM, and for a monitor, i might go for a CRT, but im really looking forward to finding a good LCD: either the Samsung 172x or an NEC, 17 inches, 16ms response time (for the games...). thanks in advance for the assistance!
  2. alrite, i was able to add circlebuttonbar.display, but now it crashes as soon as it starts up. what do i do about this? thank you for the help.
  3. ok so i tried it. i moved to the .gdesklets/Sensors/CircleButtonBar folder, and i typed in ./CircleButtonBar.display."command not found". i did start gdesklets, except that terminal was made unavailable after that, so i opened a new one.
  4. ok thanx. i was able to install it, but it wont start on me. i type in 'gdesklets CircleButtonBar', it says the file doesn't exist (plus the readme on this thing is blank, aside from a "Write Me" sign..). ive also tried "gdesklets CircleButtonBar.display" and "gdesklets start CircleButtonBar.display", "gdesklets start CircleButtonBar", and they all bring up an error saying the file does not exist. any advice? im using the urpmi'd version, which is .26 i think
  5. hi. im having a little problem with getting fluxbox to start apps when it starts. ive already made a startup file(named startup), posted here: #/bin/sh! #WHY ISNT THIS WORKING!? #fluxbox wallpaper start Esetroot -f /home/e_tuvera_jr/Backgrounds/1280/YUA1_1280.jpg #start apps. minidock & gaim & mozilla & plus one thats called apps: #maybe i can set the background in here. fbsetbg /home/e_tuvera_jr/Backgrounds/1280/YUA1_1280.jpg #apps file. hopefully this will work. minidock & gaim & mozilla & it still wont start up. i login through KDM, although i have tried to login from init 3 and it gave me an error that it couldn't start X because it couldn't open default font 'fixed'. any advice on this?
  6. i tried running as a normal user, and as root. both resulted in the same thing. this is what i typed in to run it: sh Install_CircleButtonBar_Sensor.bin i tried installing a different sensor, and it gave me the same error.
  7. i installed gdesklets version 0.26 from URPMI and i guess it works fine cuz i type in gdesklets start and it starts. now im tryin ton install the CircleButtonBar sensor, so i ran the .bin file that came in the tarball and this is what it gave me: Install_CircleButtonBar_Sensor.bin: line 18: ERROR_B64: command not found Install_CircleButtonBar_Sensor.bin: line 20: ERROR_TAR: command not found Install_CircleButtonBar_Sensor.bin: line 22: SUCCESS: command not found Install_CircleButtonBar_Sensor.bin: line 27: no_message: command not found Install_CircleButtonBar_Sensor.bin: line 28: list_only: command not found Install_CircleButtonBar_Sensor.bin: line 29: destination: command not found Install_CircleButtonBar_Sensor.bin: line 32: args: command not found Install_CircleButtonBar_Sensor.bin: line 34: syntax error near unexpected token 'if' Install_CircleButtonBar_Sensor.bin: line 34: ' if (p == "--nomsg"): no_message = 1' any advice? thanx!
  8. cool. thanx a bunch for the help. im gonna try that rite now. wish me luck on the whole gdesklets thing.
  9. contents of the .fluxbox folder: init ~init keys lastwallpaper menu startup //made by me. ~startup contents of the startup file: minidock thanx for the help!
  10. hmm ok, ill check them out. on another note, how do you get the dockapps to start when you start fluxbox, and not when you enter it in a console? edit: ok, so i looked at that FAQ that you linked me to, and it said to edit the file called startup in the hidden fluxbox folder, except i dont have one. i can make one, but whats the format?
  11. hey, im tryin to install gDesklets now, and part of the way through, compiling from source, i decided to just URPMI the thing instead, so i did, and now gDesklets is installed (i guess i can tell by the fact that something does happen when i type gDesklets in the command line) i cant figure out how to use it, plus its version 0.26, not 0.30, the latest. when i try to compile from source, it says it cant find the Python header files. where can i get those? in what package would those be? thanx for the help! edit: i fixed the header file problem, but now gnome-python ./configure cant find the pygtk that i installed. it says i should point the pKG_CONFIG_PATH to the dir w/pygtk-2.0.pc in it.
  12. i c, so im not the only one. it just went out on me. anyways, i have some questions about fluxbox: 1. i downloaded a dockapp plus ROX-Filer (to replace Nautilus), how do i set it up so that the dockapp starts automatically when i start Flux, and how do i place a "home" icon on the desktop? 2. say for example, i have more than one window on the screen, none of them are maximized. when i move the mouse from window A to window B, B pops up and puts A behind it. any way to disable this feature? 3. and a little off topic here, but, in GNOME system monitor, it says that 244 out of 250 MB of RAM has been used, while in GKrellm, it says i have 149 MB RAM left. which one do i believe? thanx for the help, its much appreciated :-)
  13. well, the thing is, i can get into GNOME, but when i do get in, a recurring error message pops up (windows 98 style) telling me that Nautilus has crashed due to a fatal error (segmentation fault). i try to access it from the newly installed fluxbox and it does the same thing. im not sure which version it is either. thats ok though, i think all is working well with the ROX-Filer. thanx for the help!
  14. thanks. mind if i ask how to view the home folder? nautilus isn't working right.
  15. ok so i installed it from RPMDrake and it works fine now.....now i gotta figure out how to log out.... (arrgh...) and change the background. thanx for ur help!
  16. when i start GNOME, i get this error saying that nautilus crashed due to a fatal error (segmentation fault) and when i click on it to make it go away, it comes back again, and again. 2. in KDE, the fonts within the programs are kinda small. the title bar fonts and the taskbar fonts are fine, its just the fonts inside the program (for example, in Mozilla, the "File" "Edit" "View" options are kinda small, same thing w/GAIM: i can barely make out my friends away message. its so small) any suggestions on this?.
  17. i downloaded the fluxbox-0.1.14 source tarball from their website, unpacked it into its own little directory, and pulled a ./configure on it. worked fine, but when i got to the "make" part, it looked like it had some problems. i wasn't too sure about this, so i jumped to "make install" and it too looked like it had some problems. this is what i saw when i ran "make" fluxbox.cc: In member function `void Fluxbox::save_rc()': fluxbox.cc:1976: error: `B_EuropeanDate' undeclared (first use this function) fluxbox.cc:1976: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each function it appears in.) fluxbox.cc: In member function `void Fluxbox::load_rc(BScreen*)': fluxbox.cc:2324: error: `B_AmericanDate' undeclared (first use this function) make[3]: *** [fluxbox.o] Error 1 make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/e_tuvera_jr/DesktopsLinuxRelatedStuff/fluxbox-0.1.14/src' make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/e_tuvera_jr/DesktopsLinuxRelatedStuff/fluxbox-0.1.14/src' make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/e_tuvera_jr/DesktopsLinuxRelatedStuff/fluxbox-0.1.14' make: *** [all] Error 2 {/CODE] and when i "make install" [CODE] fluxbox.cc: In member function `void Fluxbox::save_rc()': fluxbox.cc:1976: error: `B_EuropeanDate' undeclared (first use this function) fluxbox.cc:1976: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each function it appears in.) fluxbox.cc: In member function `void Fluxbox::load_rc(BScreen*)': fluxbox.cc:2324: error: `B_AmericanDate' undeclared (first use this function) make[2]: *** [fluxbox.o] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/e_tuvera_jr/DesktopsLinuxRelatedStuff/fluxbox-0.1.14/src' make[1]: *** [install-recursive] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/e_tuvera_jr/DesktopsLinuxRelatedStuff/fluxbox-0.1.14/src' make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1 they look similar, and as far as i can tell, fluxbox wasn't installed properly/completely. any advice? did i forget to do something? thanks
  18. cool. thanx for d info. anyone know what games do work with the free version of Cedega?
  19. well, the only game ive tried installing w/Cedega(CVS) is Ghost Recon, and i have downloaded the DCOM98 thing from the microsoft website (supposed to provide support for the InstallShield Installer..) when i type in "cvscedega /mnt/cdrom/setup.exe", A little box appears with a "Ghost Recon is now preparing the Installshield wizard....etc" plus the Wine Console, and after that nothing happens. any suggestions? i
  20. UT2004 has Linux support on it, and the installer is on the first CD if im not mistaken.
  21. it just says 2.0 on it
  22. i tried to mount the Cd-Rom. i type mount and it says this. /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/part1 on / type ext3 (rw) none on /proc type proc (rw) none on /proc/bus/usb type usbdevfs (rw) none on /dev type devfs (rw) none on /sys type sysfs (rw) none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,mode=0620) /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/part6 on /home type ext3 (rw) none on /mnt/cdrom type supermount //(rw,noexec,dev=/dev/hdd,fs=ext2,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850) none on /mnt/cdrom2 type supermount (ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,dev=/dev/hdc,fs=ext2,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850) none on /mnt/floppy type supermount (rw,sync,dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850) none on /mnt/hd type supermount (rw,dev=/dev/hda1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850) so i try "mount -t vfat /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom". and it gives me a "permisison denied" error. how do i get permission to "mount" and yes, i am running as root in the CLI. thanks a lot! edit: heres the harddrake info Bus: ‎ide Drive capacity: ‎burner Channel: ‎secondary New devfs device: ‎/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target1/lun0/cd Old device file: ‎/dev/hdd Media class: ‎cdrom
  23. thanks for the help. i wuz able to find gimp-2.0 in the usr/bin dir, and instead of adding a menu entry, i just updated the link to point at gimp-2.0. i just cant figure out if this is 2.0.4. the "about" thing is kinda vague.

    gimp 2.0.4

ok, so i downloaded the .tar.gz off of the gimp.org website, and i was able to ./configure, make and make install with no apparent errrors, but i cant seem to find the app in either the menu, through "locate gimp-2.0.4", or by trying to launch it the console. id like to know, where do i go to get this thing to run? i installed gimp2.0.2 from RPM (via URPMI) and it showed up in the applications menu. thanks a lot!
