    new DVD burner

I have two burners, one for cds and one for dvds. The problem is, is that the dvd burner will not mount or show any movies unless I first run k3b. After that, it is "seen", and then I can watch movies. I think it is registered incorrectly in fstab, but I'm not sure. And if it is that, I do not know what should be written.

    new DVD burner

Yes, I'm running Mandrivia 2006 download edition. I've also updated all the files, even though there was a problem there. I don't know if it matters, but in MCC, it shows that I need to update xorg-x11-server-6.9.0-5.3.20060mdk.i586. Everytime I do it, it stills says I need to update it. For some reason, even thought it installed itself, it isn't recognize as being installed. Could this be the problem? I've also tried to install it through console with the command: # urpmi --auto-select.

    new DVD burner

A question, though. Is my dvd burner considered a removable device? I have it in my computer case, like my floppy. Another question. If I phisically change the position of my burners, putting one in the position of the other, changing also the jumper settings, do you think that would help?

I thought fstab should be different too, which is why I checked it before and after I opened up k3b.

Yes, I always have it to run on boot. I just checked it, and it is running.

    new DVD burner

I had a dvd reader and a cd burner. I replaced the dvd reader with a dvd burner. I did not change anything. I even kept the same jumper setting. All I did was slide out the dvd reader and slide the dvd burner in, attaching it to the same cables. The system recognizes it, but it will not mount. One oddity I found out, though. I open k3b, it works for about 5 minutes while scanning for the burners. After k3b finally opens up, I can play dvds. When I re-boot the system, I have to re-do the process before it will mount dvds. Before and after I open k3b, fstab and mtab do not change. In fstab, the dvd burner is cdrom and the cd burner is cdrom2. fstab is: # This file is edited by fstab-sync - see 'man fstab-sync' for details /dev/hdb1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/hda5 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdb8 /linuxandwindows vfat umask=0022,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0022,users,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,noauto,ro 0 0 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0022,users,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0022,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs umask=0022,nls=iso8859-1,ro 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hdb7 /usr ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdb6 /var ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0 mtab is: /dev/hdb1 / ext3 rw 0 0 none /proc proc rw 0 0 none /sys sysfs rw 0 0 none /proc/bus/usb usbfs rw,devmode=0664,devgid=43 0 0 /dev/hda5 /home ext3 rw 0 0 /dev/hdb8 /linuxandwindows vfat rw,umask=0022,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount rw,sync,dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,-- 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs ro,umask=0022,nls=iso8859-1 0 0 /dev/hdb7 /usr ext3 rw 0 0 /dev/hdb6 /var ext3 rw 0 0 none /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc binfmt_misc rw 0 0 With MCC, I tried changing how it was mounted. Even with supermount, it will not work. It is presently mounted with noauto. I haven't tried to burn a dvd yet (I have to go buy one first!!). Any ideas on how to resolve the problem? Thanks. Kieth
  7. Duhhh! OK, I finally understand!!! (It takes some us a little longer than others!) I put the command line in quotes and wine tries to open the reader, but it can't for some reason. I'll "tinker" around with it for a while, though, and see what happens. Thanks again.
  8. Thanks for the replies. The actual problem, though, is that there is a "space" between the word 'Acrobat' and '4.0'. Therefore wine cannot find the program. bash-3.00$ wine /c/Programmi/Adobe/Acrobat 4.0/Reader/AcroRd32.exe wine: cannot find '/c/Programmi/Adobe/Acrobat' In the above example, and in the one I gave yesterday, wine stops checking at 'Acrobat'. It does not look for 'Acrobat 4.0' because it does not see or recognise the space between the word 'Acrobat' and the number '4.0'.
  9. How can I get wine to run the acroreader in Windows XP, when there is a gap in the command line? The location is: /mnt/windows/Programmi/Adobe/Acrobat 4.0/Reader/AcroRd32.exe. As you can see, there is a gap between Acrobat and 4.0. When I invoke wine, it states: bash-3.00$ wine /mnt/windows/Programmi/Adobe/Acrobat 4.0/Reader/AcroRd32.exe wine: cannot find '/mnt/windows/Programmi/Adobe/Acrobat'
  10. I think he just wants to download the packages he wants to install (not everything available). Then he can load them once he's off line. If I'm not mistaken, to do this all he would have to do is go to a site, such as ftp://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors/linu...0/main_updates/ and download what he wants. Then he can install what he wants.
  11. I'm still trying to get this thing working, but . . . I tried looking on winehq, but to no luck. Anyway, another bit of info that might help someone to help me :P . In terminal, when I start up acroread, here is the output: bash-3.00$ wine /mnt/cdrom/misc/acro_win/reader/acrord32.exe fixme:ole:CoRegisterMessageFilter stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:font:WineEngRemoveFontResourceEx :stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:imm:ImmGetContext (0x1002a): stub Now, when I open the .pdf file, here is the output: fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub err:ddeml:DdeConnect Done with INITIATE, but no Server window available err:shell:SHGetFileInfoW pidl is null! fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {efd0e6ba-db5f-11d0-8fac-08002be4e62a} not registered err:ole:create_server class {efd0e6ba-db5f-11d0-8fac-08002be4e62a} not registered fixme:ole:CoCreateInstance no classfactory created for CLSID {efd0e6ba-db5f-11d0-8fac-08002be4e62a}, hres is 0x80040150 fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap stub Thanks. 12. For display managers, I have GDM and XDM. I would like to have the kde one as well. What is the name of the file(s) I need to install to have it? Thanks. Kieth
  13. Well, I'm still plugging away trying to get this thing working. Just a couple of thoughts. I have tried many different ways to read these books. For example, I copied the entire cd to my computer, then accessed it with the linux acroreader and the acrobat adobe 4 (that's on the cd). The results were the same as the above posts. With the above posts, I have been starting the acroreader directly from the cd, with the command: wine /mnt/cdrom/misc/acro_win/reader/acrord32.exe. Then I open the .pdf file that's on the cd. In the past I've tried to open the acroreader I have in WindowsXP, but I can't because in the command line there is a blank: file:///mnt/windows/Programmi/Adobe/Acrobat 4.0/Reader/AcroRd32.exe. Is there a way to start the acroreader with wine even though there is a blank in the command line between Acrobat and 4.0?
  14. Just to make sure I covered more bases, I also tried gpdf, evince, Kpdf, Xpdf, Adobe Reader (for linux), and KGhostview. I can see the page (and print) just fine. It's just that when I click on a link, they cannot go to that page.
  15. Well, I moved a lot of fonts into /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF. I took them from /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/ttf. 16. In MCC, I installed all of the Windows fonts. I did not previously check to see if they were put in the file you mentioned. 17. The problem using the acroreader for linux is that the "search" part never works. That is, when I click on a link, it cannot find the page. Attached is a snapshot.
  18. For a long time, I have tried to use adobe acrobat reader to read some books I have on cds. The problem was using the search engine in the adobe reader. Today, with wine, I was able to open book, using the following command: bash-3.00$ wine /mnt/cdrom/misc/acro_win/reader/acrord32.exe. It opened fine. I can even use the search aspect. What I mean is that there are links on the pdf pages, that when I click on them, it actually takes me to the desired page. The problem now is that the pages are un-legable. Everything is black. I am attaching a snapshot. Any help in resolving the problem (even in another way - virtual desktop?) would be appreciated. Kieth
  19. I recently installed bitdefender, and I've been trying to learn to use it. In console I typed: bdc --files /home/kieth/, and it checked my files. The results were: Results: Folders :4707 Files :4467 Packed :96 Infected files :0 Suspect files :0 Warnings :0 I/O errors :1 Files/second :120 Scan time :00:00:37 What I would like to do is use it to check my e-mails. How can I set it up? Also, if possible, I would like to use a gui. I downloaded kbitdefender-0.9-9mdk.noarch.rpm, but I have had trouble installing it because it needs 'gamebase runtimes', which I cannot find for linux. Any help wuold be appreciated.
  20. If you want, you could download a new mouse theme and load it. I used to have to do that all the time with the older Mandrakes because they never recognized my mouse. Here's a link to Kde-look.org
  21. Try this. In an editor (Kwrite?), edit /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme. Mine states: [icon Theme] Inherits=wonderland Just erase "wonderland" (which is in /usr/share/icons) and type in another icon name.
  22. Thank you. I tried more than once to get a different login from MCC, but couldn't. So I edited the file mentioned in the post you mentioned.
  23. When I log in, I must type my name. What file do I have to load in order to just use my mouse to click on my name or picture to log in? [moved from Software by spinynorman]

    tuxkart

I forgot to add that I had installed plib-1.8.4, and that I cannot run tuxquest either (which if I'm not mistaked, uses plib-1.8.4.
