  1. Just a silly curiosity question. I'll go into MCC and do updates, but then I noticed that frequently in terminal, when I use --auto select, there are files to be installed that were not listed in MCC (updates). Why?
  2. Sorry to show my ignorance, especially after using Mandrake for so many years, but . . . I have no idea if my root filesystem is reiserfs. How can I know?
  3. I waited a few days before writing a reply, to see if my computer booted up OK. It seems to be a bit better, but it still stops frequently at "Checking root filesystem". Would there be anything else to do to remedy the problem?
  4. Finally, all is working well! As I mentioned in my first post, I loaded the ATI drivers with upmi ati-xorg. Then I did as ian mentioned, but nothing would work. Then on another post, where ian was helping someone else, he mentioned to download the drivers with urpmi dkms-ati. I did this, followed the instructions given when they installed, and now everything is working great. glxgears gives a rate of 9363 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1872.533 FPS 9344 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1868.619 FPS 9343 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1868.573 FPS Thanks ian!!!
  5. An update of ical just came out. After I installed it, ical started right up.
  6. Well, I tried it, but something didn't go right. When I chose Radeon (fglrx) in MCC, it said it couldn't load drivers, which I presume is the problem. I accepted the changes anyway ( (fglrx) instead of (fbdev) ). Then I edited etc/X11/xorg.conf. I then rebooted, and everything loaded up fine, but nothing was changed. I just now checked in MCC, and the driver being used is still Radeon (fbdev). Before attempting the above mentioned changes, I had read the other posts and wrote down some commands to enter in terminal. Here they are, with the exception of [root@localhost kieth]# glxinfo | grep direct. I'm not including it, because while I was writing this post a few minutes ago, I was also typing the commands in terminal to post the answers. When I typed in [root@localhost kieth]# glxinfo | grep direct, and pressed 'Enter', it closed the graphical interface (KDE). I was still able to restart my session with lilo, though. Anyway, here are the results of the various commands I put in terminal. [root@localhost kieth]# urpmi mesa The package(s) are already installed [root@localhost kieth]# aticonfig bash: aticonfig: command not found [root@localhost kieth]# fglrxinfo bash: fglrxinfo: command not found [root@localhost kieth]# lsmod | grep fglrx [root@localhost kieth]# The changed section in etc/X11/xorg.conf is: Section "Module" Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension Load "v4l" # Video for Linux Load "extmod" Load "type1" Load "freetype" load "glx" load "dri" EndSection Section "DRI" Mode 0666 EndSection Section "InputDevice"
  7. I've been reading the different topics on getting the ATI graphic cards working, and it seems as if my newly downloaded ATI drivers are not installed. Any, I downloaded the drivers using: upmi ati-xorg. Before downloading, the drivers Radeon, Radeon (fglrx), Radeon (vesa) or Radeon 8500 did not work. Therefore the only driver I could/can use is Radeon (fbdev). Any help to get this working would be appreciated. Here is a command I gave in terminal: [root@localhost kieth]# lsmod | grep fglrx [root@localhost kieth]# fglrxinfo bash: fglrxinfo: command not found [root@localhost kieth]# fglrxinfo bash: fglrxinfo: command not found My xorg.conf file is (after deleting Option "DPMS" in the Section "Device") is: # File generated by XFdrake (rev 57713) # ********************************************************************** # Refer to the xorg.conf man page for details about the format of # this file. # ********************************************************************** Section "Files" # font server independent of the X server to render fonts. 8. This is my 3rd post in about 1/2 hour. As you can tell, I'm home, and I have a bit of time to try and get some programs working that I've used with Mandriva 2006, but can't get working with 2007. Thanks for your patience! Any, with ical, when I start it in terminal, this is the result. Any ideas on how to get it working? Thanks. With Kontact, it doesn't want to print my schedule in order according to time. I'm attaching a snapshot of the print preview. Any ideas on how to resolve it? Thanks. Kieth
  10. Thanks, ianw1974. Here is my /etc/sysconfig/init file. Is it the very last word I must change? # color => new RH6.0 bootup # verbose => old-style bootup # anything else => new style bootup without ANSI colors or positioning BOOTUP=color # Turn on graphical boot GRAPHICAL=yes # column to start "[ OK ]" label in RES_COL=65 # terminal sequence to move to that column. 11. Almost everytime while booting Mandriva 2007, it stops at: "Checking root filesystem". I then have to push the computer's reset button and reboot. Again, it almost always stops there, so I have to re-push the reset button, then it will boot up. When it does finally boot up, right after "Checking root filesystem", it says "QiLinux, clean, . . ." Any idea how I could resolve the problem? Thanks. Kieth
  12. My graphics are not working right, so I thought I would try installing some ATI drivers. Reading another post, ianw1974 said to use the command urpmi dkms-ati. I did, and I was told that I would have to install a new pachage. This is not a problem, I just wanted to know which is best. Thanks. # urpmi dkms-ati One of the following packages is needed: 1- kernel-source-stripped-2.6.17.5mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The source code of the Linux kernel stripped for post build (to install) 2- kernel-tmb-source-2.6.17.13-4mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The Linux source code for kernel-tmb-2.6.17.13-4mdv (to install) 3- kernel-tmb-source-stripped-2.6.17.13-4mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The stripped Linux source code for kernel-tmb-2.6.17.13-4mdv (to install) 4- kernel-source-2.6.17.5mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The source code for the Linux kernel (to install) 5- kernel-linus-source-2.6.18.rc7.1mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The source code for the Linux kernel (to install) 6- kernel-multimedia-source-2.6.17.13-3mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The source code for the Linux kernel-multimedia-2.6.17.13-3mdv (to install) 7- kernel-linus-source-stripped-2.6.18.rc7.1mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The source code of the Linux kernel stripped for post build (to install) 8- kernel-multimedia-source-stripped-2.6.17.13-3mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The stripped source code for the Linux kernel-multimedia-2.6.17.13-3mdv (to install) What is your choice? (1-8)
  13. Well, I tried and tried to mount the hard drives, but couldn't. Anyway, just by using the computer, Mandriva finally "straightened" itself out. Now everything works well. Thanks for the help. Kieth
  14. Ok, I found it, but I can't get to it. Could you tell me the mount options to enter when I boot?
  15. That's the file I copied, but I thought that was Suse's file. Well, I suppose it is for both, only I cannot find 'my' oriiginal files (home, etc.), but only those 'made' by the Live cd. Where, in the file directory, can I find the Mandriva file structure?
  16. I installed Mandriva 2007 Free, which went very well. Only problem, I get a blank screen after lilo. Actually I had the same problem with 2006 {after installing a new motherboard and video card}. Since the 2007 was about to be released, I decided to wait. Reading another topic, I decided to use a live CD {Suse - the only distro I can get to work} to replace my Mandriva xorg.conf file with that of the Suse xorg.conf. One problem, I can't find the Mandriva file. Any idea where I can find it, or resolve my problem? Thanks.
  17. I learned to use Windows 3.1, and liked it. Then I got W98 and hated it, because I wanted to take of the programs I did want (namely Internet Explorer). If I'm not mistaken, someone told me about Linux, so I started reading to see which distribution I wanted. Mandrake was the easiest, so. . . . I believe I started with 7.something.
  18. I have a silly question, but did you go into the Software Management part of MCC and delete the undesired daemon? Then, while in MCC, you can click on the RPM icon, and delete your RPM source. Kieth

    tuxkart

I was looking around at the different posts and I saw this old one of mine. I then decided to try tuxkart again, using console, just to see what would happen. Well, it now works. Who knows what I did, as I haven't tried to do anything with tuxkart since I added this post. At least it works!! Kieth

    new DVD burner

Well, I finally got around to moving my heavy desk and getting to my computer. I did as jaraeez said, unplugging my burners, turning on and off the computer, re-pluggnig the burners, and turning it back on. No luck. Oh well, it was worth a try. Thanks for the help. Kieth

    new DVD burner

Thanks, I'll give it a try in a day or 2. I have to pull out a heavy desk, crawl behind in and carefully get to where I can open the computer. It's a major undertaking, so I don't do it every day! I will definately try it, though. Thanks.

    new DVD burner

Thanks for the help. I'll just wait for the new Mandrivia to come out. I don't want to go to Cooker, as I'm not too good at "this computer stuff". As long as I run k3b first, everything works. My computer has enough memory and speed to handle it (1 gigabite ram, AMD 3000). It will be a annoying, but I can live with it temporarily. I've been using Mandrake/Mandrivia for so long that I feel "lost" in Windows. Thanks, Kieth

    new DVD burner

Thanks for the posts. AussieJohn, I just copied and pasted your cdrom2 entry into my fstab file. No luck. I asked earlier if changing the drives on the IDE cable would work, and scarecrow didn't think it would. Well, I thought that since nothing else is working, I might as well try. After all, it can't hurt. Well, scarecrow and I were both right, it didn't help and it didn't hurt! Since I had my computer case open, I decided to disconnect my cd burner and just have the dvd burner as master and see what would happen. Well, nothing happened. It still wouldn't mount. Just another question, then I'll just wait for the new Mandrivia to come out to see if it will resolve the problem. Could the problem be because I bought a LG dvd burner? Thanks again for the help. Even if it wasn't resolved I really appreciate the input. Kieth

    new DVD burner

Well, I took out 'sync', but to no avail. It still will not mount a dvd. Thanks for the idea, anyway. I'll give any other ideas a try!! Would someone with a dvd burner post their /etc/fstab file, so I could see it? Thanks. Kieth
