  1. I had the same problem, but it somehow misteriously solved itself after I did the last KDE updates (3.2.3).

It's been about 6 days without a restart now and all is swift and programs are starting normally. Hope it stays so (fingers crossed).

p.s. Anyone knows when KDE 3.4 comes out?

  2. After some traveling around various distros I've come back to MDK.

    It's not bad.

Though I'd prefer a apt-get/debian distro, but Ubuntu at the current state is too unusable for KDE (Gnome artefacts in KDE env). At least for me. So I'm sticking with MDK.

Libranet 3.0 will come out soon, so I'll try it then.

p.s. There is a KUbuntu in development too. KDE based Ubuntu.

I'd use Debian, but the installation scares me and I don't have a test box.

  3. I've been getting the same error with a lot of progs (Kwrite, Kuickshow, Konqueror, Kedit), but nobody even replied with any proposal of solution to my plea for help ( ), so I did a double reinstall (it was messed up the first reinstall too) and for now it seems to be ok. For now. I think it has something to do with updates, updating your KDE in not the right order somehow.. really duno. :screwy:

edit: here is the original thread -> http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?act=ST&f=10&t=22145

  4. Hmmm.. I tried again to use Gnome. Got to credit you, I like it better now, than I did in the days of Mandrake 9.1 (yea, I used Linux then for a while).

Actually I quite like it, damn you!

Though I feel limited when using its' config. I can config kde a lot faster and what's more important, to a greater extent.

  5. 10.0 sometimes had problems with mounting.

Haven't seen this on 10.1 (but it has it's own small issues)

Try (1) inserting the cd and do what before, if still gives the message ->

then (2) as root in a terminal write "fuser -km /mnt/cdrom"

this should kill all the proceses that keep it busy*

    then (3)"umount /mnt/cdrom"

    then (4) "mount /mnt/cdrom"

*It is possible that you can kill X or something, but it's rare and nothing damaging.

  6. Hello, all!

After MDK giving me some headaches with some glitches I want to take a breath of fresh air and try something different.

    To my attention came Yoper.

What do you know of it, are there any problems, is it worth the try?

I use my computer as a home desktop and mostly use for office and multimedia tasks.

How is Yoper with hardware detection, is it capable of 5.1 sound through SB Live?

Is it easy enough to get it connect to internet (and LAN)?

I've been using Linux since March last year and don't feel quite ready for Debian and don't have enough time for Gentoo (compiling hell).

    thanx!

  7. hdd is how Mandrake sees your cdrom

    hda is for primary master

    hdb is for primary slave

    hdc is for secondary master

    hdd is for secondary slave

or something in the lines of this

edit: What it asked, is that you insert the particular CD in your CDROM drive.

  8. What I've noticed is that after doing updates (I haven't located the exact update, but this happens the 2nd time) Mandrake won't start the mentioned apps. If I want to start them with konsole, I get no error output. They seem to be starting, but don't start. Kedit opens, but freezes when I want to save, Kuickshow won't scroll onto new images and freezes. Kwrite shows it is starting, but doesn't start, same with Konqueror, but if I try to start Konqueror through a terminal then at least I get some output

    [avatar@localhost]$ konqueror
konqueror: WARNING: KGenericFactory: instance requested but no instance name passed to the constructor!

when I try to run it as root, I get this

    [root@localhost]# konqueror
    Link points to "/tmp/ksocket-root"
QPixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used
QPixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used
    Link points to "/tmp/kde-root"

What I will do now is reinstall MDK for the 3rd time in a row and won't isntall any updates up until the next version of MDK is released or try another distro for the time being, because this is really annoying.

The problem solves itself after a restart, but then again after a few days or a day it shows itself.

Almost brings memories of Windows (aghr!)

Anyone else has this glitch, knows what can be wrong, can help me?

  9. har, har, har..

I'm working on it! And restoring my system. Stupid MDK :mr-green:

It seems to me that 10.1 has more bugs than 10.0 had...

Anyways, where is that damn 'hotplug'? Yes, I know what is google, but save me the click, if it is just one word or path.

Anyways, I think that my Card Reader has a special, not mentioned on the package feature -> Incompability of all that is Linux.

I even installed the fresh MDK with a Flash card plugged in...

  10. Well, I'm home and I just tried, but not fully (hotplug), though I have some other troubles with mandrake (programs (kwrite) not starting, quickview doing weird things. I think I'll reinstall MDK and then in calm spirits try this whole usb thing again.

I'll notify the board if I'm successful or need any additional help. System first, usb has to wait.

  11. Yeah, Linux can use some more work on the usb front... but at the current state, it's usable, for external readers at least.

I object! :wall: I've got an external reader and I think I have better chances to make MDK recognize a brick wall as an usb-storage than my Card Reader with a CF card. I think in the last few days I've read and applied all the sane usb storage and card reader FAQ's that google could find.

USB support for Linux sucks! (At least from my experience, which doesn't end with that one sole Card Reader.)

I understand that Linux is open source, etc, etc, I get it for free, so I have no rights to demand anything, so I don't. But it really pains and stings sometimes and I'm no joe-sixpack user.

  12. Yes, all the modules are loaded, including usb-storage. And as you see from my first post, Harddrake finds my card reader, but doesn't assign a /dev 'module' (block) to it. Mandrake knows that there is a Card Reader attached, but it stops right there.

And I'm afraid to buy a new Card Reader, because it might not work as well and I'm sorta low on cash now. For the moment it seems that I've stuck with VMwaring w2k and accessing my CF card from there, because I think I've done everything possible at my skill level (which is not low, but I can not make my own kernel).
