  1. Sure. If you are using KDE, go to kcontrol > peripherals > display > power control edit: noticed about hd. Don't know, but you can set the laptop to go into power saving mode under kcontrol > power control > laptop battery > power control
  2. Well, the problem was that FC didn't detect my laptop wide screen correctly and didn't offer resoltuions I needed. Hacking xorg didn't fix the problem, because it was a chip bios problem. So I found out on the net that there is a special script (915 resolutions) that fixes my problem. Unfortunately it had to be launched in a no X environment. Anyway, because of a problem with wifi I installed Mandriva ONE 2007 on my laptop and upon resolution selection it offered me to automatically install 915 resolutions and set it up to launch it every time before X upon boot. So my solution in this case is to run Mandriva ONE instead of Fedora Core 6 on my laptop. :D
  3. I see. :) My Asp5610 version has Intel centrino processor.
  4. I gave up FC6 on my laptop after trying out Mandriva ONE 2007, it recognized my card right away and connecting to my wifi was a breeze, even with my WPA2 security. So I'm running Mandriva again, at least on one of my computers. :) That's sort of "back to the roots" to me.
  5. Thanks for the info, guys! I already solved my problem through other means, but this is useful to know.
  6. So I can edit the xinitrc config file to add a command I wish to be executed before X starts?
  7. hi, I have an Acer 5610 laptop with FC6 I installed the drivers from ATrpms and the network manager found my wlan card, but when trying to connect to activate the card/network config, I get this error Determining IP information for eth1... failed; no link present. Check cable? Is it a problem with my wifi network or the card? Please help, just two days with this laptop and I haven't tried to connect anything else to my wifi network, because I have nothing else to connect.... [moved from Laptops by spinynorman]
  8. Hi! I want my OS to run one command every time on boot before startx (X) (on runlevel 5 and 3) I want it as root run something like this: /usr/share/program/program -param1 -param2 Where do I write in that command line in Fedora as well as in Mandriva? Thanks, you're the best!
  9. ok, thanks. but then help a network newbie (my first Linux network with a router I'll try to set up) and point me to a page which explains how to set up "any other router" thanx!
  10. Hi, I just bought a Linksys wrt54gl router and it says that in order to install it I have to insert the included cd and run it. Problem - it's a darn .exe file and won't launch on Linux, gives me an error when I try to launch it with Wine. So, any of you installed such a router on a Linux only network? Thanks!
  11. Too late, I already ordered the router. :D Even if in the end it ends up I didn't really require it, it'll come as good learning practice, because I've no experience with them. Laptop and router will arrive on tuesday.
  12. Thanks for the advice, but as it is now, two PCs through a switch are connected to the modem - my and my sister's, so I don't think it'll be a problem to replace the switch with a router and add one more computer through wireless to it.
  13. I searched around a bit and FreeNX seems very nice: http://freenx.berlios.de/ Any experience with it?
  14. ok, thanx, ian, will try when I get the chance my main pc uses FC6
  15. One other network related, but a bit different question. I'd like to control my main pc through laptop over LAN (not internet), something like Remote Desktop, but I want it secure. Nothing fancy, just to control my sound system. What do you suggest?
  16. Thanks all for the valuable input! As for Linksys Linux support: So I'll be buying 'WRT54GL'
  17. That's actually a good plan, but how to make my computers not restricting access to each other? :D I'm really sorry if these questions seem dumb, but I really have no experience with networking. :(
  18. Thanks, but what about LAN, my two computers and my sister not getting into my computers? I've made a more precise schematic of what I have in mind: [ADSL modem] | ethernet | [wireless router__________________] [internet connection for all with access]---------cat5---------[sister's win pc, no access to my computers through LAN] | |----------------wireless LAN----------[my laptop] |.......................................................| [my pc]--------wireless LAN------------| Also I want that nobody else except these computers can connect to my wireless internet, if I haven't given them access, i.e., don't want neighbours using it, because my connection is slow as it is.
  19. It's managing internet connection on its' own. The modem is plugged in to a little flat box (wow, this sounds stupid!) which separates the land line phone traffic line from the DSL connection. Then it on its own just gives out ethernet connection to anything that is connected to it.
  20. So, to make it clear: 1. Can I switch a wireless router to my ADSL modem; 2. The router enables internet connection for the computers on the network; 3. The router makes it possible to make a private LAN between (my) two of the computers in the network, i.e., my sister doesn't have access to my computers through the LAN?
  21. Can't I just switch the outgoing cat5 from the modem to the router? It's ADSL on paper, but computers recognize it as a standard LAN connection, i.e., I don't need to log in, etc.
  22. I've settled for ACER Aspire 5610ANWLMi (Intel Core Solo T1350) It comes bundled with some kind of Linux and suits my needs, I'll just upgrade the 60GB hd to 100gb.
  23. Thanks! Now I'll try to understand what you just said, much is new to me. :D I don't think I can replace the ADSL modem, because it's some special kind provided by the phone/internet provider company. Do you know anything about AirLive wireless routers? They seem cheap and are available in this region. Other available ones are: GIGA-BYTE, D-LINK, Linksys, A-LINK (and belkin) What about this: http://www.airlive.com/WT-2000AP.htm
  24. Hi, first I have to inform that I'm a total newbie when it concerns local networks, because I've never had more than one box at a time. But in a week I'll be getting an Acer laptop (will put FC or Mandriva on it) and I need some advice in making a home LAN. My current setup is such: Internet ADSL connection which is connected to a modem and further down the way the connection by computers is understood as LAN. One step down from the ADSL modem I have a basic switch from which go two cat5 cables: one to my box, the other to my sister's on the other side of the house. The modem and router are in my room. So the idea is to leave cat5 going to my sister's computer and put a wireless router/hub/whatever it's called to divide the internet connection between my two computers (pc + laptop) as well as link my computer and laptop into a private wireless LAN. I need two kinds of advice here: 1. What hardware should I get? 2. How do I make that setup work software side, i.e., do I have to run a server or will the wireless router do the job for me? In short, I need to make this work: [internet connection] | [router]---------cat5---------[sister's win pc] | [wireless]-----------[my laptop] |......................................| [my pc]--------LAN--------| Or maybe this is possible? => [internet connection] | [wireless router]---------cat5---------[sister's win pc] | |---------------------------[my laptop] |...................................| [my pc]--------LAN--------| help? :)
