  1. Its weird though......when I go "service network restart" it says "Bringing up interface th1: [FAILED]"......it's strange cause despite this, the internet works fine through eth1 Ah well, can't complain :)
  2. WOW Thank you so much guys, it works now :), managed to find BT's (ISP in britain I am using) DNS after a little googling: 194.74.65.69 So thank you :D :D , I truley appreaciate it :)
  3. well when I delete 127.0.0.1 it still takes a good 30 seconds longer than by typing in the IP, but I don't quite udnerstand what you mean by my ISP's DNS How would I go about doing that? Should I check my ISP's website? Or is there a specific way of finding out. Excuse my newbiness :(
  4. Thanks about the ping :) resolve: nameserver 127.0.0.1 nameserver 192.168.1.1 <-IP of router # search #ppp temp entry and hosts: 192.168.1.1 b******* <-sorry, had to delete 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.168.1.11 Miniserver <-IP address assigned for eth1 (pcmcia card) 192.168.1.20 Miniserver <-IP address assigned to eth0....which is a built in card which doesn't really work and no cable is plugged in.....no difference is made when cable is plugged in cause network is tweaked to run through eth1 Thanks for the help :), I really appreaciate it
  5. Hi all, well I've installed Mandrake and it all looks great....but i've been having a little problem with the network: When I lauch konqueror I find I can acces my router (192.168.1.1) fine and my localhost fine (127.0.0.1 or http://loalhost) When I type in google's IP (http://216.239.59.99) I get there nice a quick.....however when I actually type in "www.google.com" the same does not happen. What is really awkward is that when I type in the actual address (google.com rather than its IP) after a wait of about 1 minute I do actually reach the page So it can't be that the DNS is configured wrongly cause I do eventually get to the page....it jsut takes a minute longer than if I type in the actual address I have configured the nameserver to 192.168.1.1, the address to my router and the same dns addres I assign to my windows computers.....so could someone help please? If you need any more information, could you tell me which log files you want me to post? Thanks (oh and one other thing.....when I ping something, it pings it fine....just that it continues pinging forever.....how to I terminate the ping command?)
  6. ahh well, just downloaded the official 3 cds in the end, didnt take long though
  7. ok, thank you, I was worried I'd have to downlaod the first 2/3 cds all over again, thanks
  8. Hi all.... heh....this is kinda embarrasing..... well, finally decided to get Mandrake for my server computer, so when I went to the official site I found most of the mirrors to be too slow (to download the file) as was the bittorent file (I have never really been able to use bittorent properlly) but anyway, I figured that since this was freeware there ought to be plenty of copies on p2p networls, so I went onto the edonkey network, typed in Manrake 10 and clicked on the files with the greatest sources however........there were 6 cds of them It was only after I had downloaded these 6 cd iso's that I realised that they were slightly different from the refular 3 cd iso available on the website And that's when it clicked This was the powerpack version.....the one that you are meant to buy So basically that means that I now have an illegal version, and I don't want that. So I was wandering, is it possible to install using only the first 3 cds of the powerpack and discard the other 3 cds so my install of linux does not have the extra features of powerpack? Or does it mean I will have to download the proper 3 cds all over again? Cause I would much rather bin the extra 3 cds of the power pack and install with the first 3 cds thyan to bin all of them and redownload the 3 cds.....does that make sense? Anyway, I really would like to correct this error and certainly do not want to start of my time in the linux world with an illegal copy (these guys worked hard for this and I don't want to steal from them anymore than I am by getting the free version from their site) Please don't flame me, it was a mistake on my part and am willing to fix it.
  9. Well what do you know, it works... thank you ramfree17' :D :D
  10. I've found ramfree17's guide on how to install from hard disk...so will have a look at that
  11. Hi, I am pretty mcuh a newbie to linux, and unfortunately I have already encountered a few problems.... Well, it turns out that my cd rom drive (built into my laptop) is unable to boot from cds so I have had to do a hard disk installation (of Mandrake 10) So I made a boot disk with the hdd.img file (using rawewrite or whatever). So on boot with the floppy inside it says that it is looking in /cooker/isolinux....but can't find the file So I set the root to: "root (hd0,2)" (ie pointing at the hard disk with theimage file) and in that partition I place both the iso file and a folder called CD1 containg all the extracted contents of the iso yet it cant find it even after changing the "kernel setting from "/cooker/isolinux." to "/CD1/isolinux..." So ermm.....what am I doing wrong.....I am guessing I have messed up pretty badly somewhere.....could anywone tell me where? Thanks
