  1. I'm planning to buy a 15inch LCD Monitor (in the UK) for my MDK9.2 based system and would welcome any advice or recommendations from anyone who has done the same.

    Thank you.

I just recently picked up an iiyama ProLite E380, 15" display, good repsonse time, nice color. I just set it up as a generic flat panel 1024x768 in Mdk 10, I would imagine you could do the same. Check out this review,

which is pretty accurate. Got my for $300 U.S. at Newegg and I believe this model is available globally. Hope this helps.

  2. :D  OK, I've check around the net via mb's nvidia mb's, and found this on nvnews.net:

Re: VIA KT600 chipset lack of support?

Yes, my system is stable. I had to ruin my 80 day uptime just to check the bios settings for you! No problem...

The most important thing is to make sure:

    PCI Delayed Transaction ENABLED

    I also have:

    APIC ENABLED

    MPS 1.4

    AGP aperture 64M

    AGP Mode 4x

    Drive Control AUTO

AGP Master 1 WS Write ENABLED

AGP Master 1 WS Read ENABLED

    AGP 3.0 Calibration Cycle ENABLED

    System Bios Cacheable DISABLED

    Video Ram Cacheable DISABLED

    Hope that helps.

    -Jan

After making these changes I started to see other errors...

I've seen in several other messages that 2.6 sees the KT600 as part of the KT400 family so that shouldn't be the issue, and it looks like it's finding your AGP stuff just fine. Have you tried setting NVAgp to any of the other values?

Set NVAgp to "2", and the nVidia driver LOADED :headbang: YES!!

    You guys RULE!!!!

BTW: Strange thing UT'04 works just fine....ET has no sound.

Great somethiing else to look into :hanged:

    -SP

Glad it worked, what's the word on your sound in ET?

  3. I have a question in the same alley...

I have a laptop (266Mhz, 128RAM, 6GB disk) running Fedora Core 1 with Fluxbox. This runs quite smoothly today.

Will I notice any difference installing MDK10 with Fluxbox? Will it run better/worse? I'm espesially thinking about kernel 2.6 vs 2.4 ?

I haven't tried any of the Fedora releases yet, but I have read more than once that Mandrake is fast, specifically on older hardware, but again, I haven't tried it so it's just hearsay.

  4. Thanks xbob - worked like a champ.

What characters can you use as variables i.e. like * & ? in DOS when searching?

Is there some FAQ you would recommend for someone that is familiar with DOS/Windows that is trying out Linux?  Stuff like using F3 to repeat text etc?  Tells what type of files are executable, ie .com .exe .bat in dos etc?  All the little stuff people need to know...

    Thanks again

There are many options from the command line and we could talk about grep all day, but try this link for a good place to start, * is a valid wild card, and don't forget you can take any command and look at it's man page by typing

    man commandname  i.e. man grep

And many keyboard shortcuts from Win work in KDE (although not always in the console window) such as Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, etc....

More to come, have to go to work for a few hours, later...

  5. FYI:

Ran some commands, saved them to a text file and attached them to this post.

I don't know if this helps at all!!  :wall:  :screwy:

  6. Yikes feralertx & permittivity2, I guess we are now the 400 Club – wasn’t there some religious cult named that… Oh well…

I was rummaging around and actually found another stick of PC 100 ram so now I have a whopping 96 Meg!  Of course now I am out of slots LOL.

It really made a very noticeable difference.  I have a friend that might have three sticks with 64 meg each so I might be able to TRIPPLE my RAM whoopee!

If that works well I might have to spring for some denser chips – at least the price of RAM is coming down some.

It is a bit of a steep learning curve for me. Like I will install a program then have to search all over to even try to find where it installed and what the executable (is that the right term?) is to run it.

Oh well, it is fun anyway!

The amount of free proggy's available and the quality of them is just awesome - sourceforge is my friend

Now I just need to figure out what I really want to do with this thing LOL

    Thanks guys!

try this, open a terminal and type

     whereis programname   i.e. whereis firefox

your new best friend until you get really comfortable in the file system. Hope this helps. B)

  7. Do you have the Kernel Source installed? Not sure it really matters but at least it would be something to rule out.

I installed the driver without the kernel source, and it installed without a hitch.

BTW: had an older HP Pavillion 500n reformatted drive(removed winxp) and installed MDK10.  Went out, bought and older cheap-cheap GeForce 400mx PCI (no agp on board). Installed it, downloaded nvidia driver, installed kernel modules, ran nvidia driver (installed perfectly). vim'd XFree86-4 to spec, startx..... WOW worked first time.  happiest newbie in the world    .  Fragin online with Enemy Territory.. NICE!!!!!!

Remembered I had to install the kernel source for this install, so i figured it can't hurt. I urpm'd the kernel source 2.6.3-7 (matching whatever my kernel is, not the 2.4.ish) and reinstalled the driver.

I also installed Mesa thinkin maybe that would install some lib that I'm missing. but still no luck.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

    -SP

It's kind of a slog but if you got to Appendix C of the nVIdia driver readme file it gives you a breakdown of what files "should" be present on your system and locations of a couple trouble makers. It's a tedious process, but at least it would let you rule out a bad driver install? Anyone else?

  8. Sorry...somehow missed that you've replied.....I hate these new boards.....like the old, old much more  .....no telling how many post I've missed  ' but what can we do to resolve unanswered post?' ....ummmm....use good forum code? :cheeky: I mean, the dumb thing can't even tell you what post are new w/o you telling to mark post as read and return...bla bla bla.....rant.....I guess this is progress?

    You have to, which is better and smarter anyway, edit the /etc/lilo.conf file manually. Change;

    splash=silent

    to

    splash=verbose

oh, auto 'anything' always sucks ;)

As usual you are spot on, that worked perfectly. I don't know why I kept missing it, the first time I installed 10 on this machine it picked Grub as the bootloader and even though this time I know it used Lilo I kept looking at Grub (perhaps I should start sleeping at night?).

I hate to do it, but I have to...that did it for boot up, what abuot shut down, can I force it to use the blue background instead of the black one? Thanks bvc, you always have solid answers.

  9. From the tutorial in the FAQ section

Now, in order to be able to use Java in browsers, such as Mozilla, Galeon, and so forth, you must complete these additional steps:

    cd /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/plugins/

If you got the J2RE, use this command:

    ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_01/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so libjavaplugin_oji.so

If you got the J2SDK, use this command:

    ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_01/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so libjavaplugin_oji.so

    edit: additional information

On Linux, Mozilla requires JRE 1.4.2 or later.

Mozilla 1.4 and later, and Mozilla Firebird, are compiled with gcc 3.2.3. A gcc 3.x compatible version of the Java plugin must be used. JRE 1.4.2 contains a compatible plugin.

If you installed the JRE 1.4.2_01 RPM, this plugin is /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so - and to install it for Mozilla (including Mozilla Firebird), do the following:

        * Open a terminal

        * Change to your Mozilla (or Mozilla Firebird) plugins directory

        * Issue the following command: ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so

If you are using an older Linux distribution, you may need to install the gcc3 support libraries, as the gcc 3.2 version of the Java plugin requires libgcc_s.so.1 to operate. You may be able to find packages using Google.

If you are using an old or unofficial build of Mozilla (1.4a or later) or Mozilla Firebird, you can check which compiler was used by entering about:buildconfig in the location bar and pressing enter. You will see a line such as "gcc version 3.3 20030226 (prerelease) (SuSE Linux)", which will show the compiler that was used. If gcc2.9x was used, you need to use the ns610 plugin, not the ns610-gcc32 plugin.

Now you are done, and you can close the console. Try installing a Java program, such as LimeWire, and it should work just fine.

I know it's a pain but worh the effort, the best way to learn Linux concepts is to figure out (even the hard way) to set up stufff you use every day.

  10. There is nothing to be afraid of and virtually nothing you could do permanent damage to. Why don't you try to explain your issues more clearly and specifically, and give us a run down of your hardware and I'm sure there are lots of people willing to help. I've only been around a few days and this is one of the most friendly and useful boards I have ever experienced.

  11. bringing up the eth0 also takes up some time on my box (eth0 + adsl-flatrate). this is quite normal. but it doesn't mean that your box doesn't work. it is simply that linux tries to bring up eth0 at startup, while most redmond-products start up eth0 after your dektop shows up. the time "lost" is the same.

concerning the "checking-failed" thing: go to mcc and have a look at your hardware, if there is any item that doesn't show up, although it should. i think that it yould indicate to e.g. some hotplugging device not being configured.

I got the FAILED hardware message on my first install of Mdk10. I don't have a floppy drive, have it disabled in BIOS, etc... no problems. Did a BIOS flash, which by defualt loads "optimzed defaults" which re-enables the floppy controller. So Linux would boot, find a new hardware entry in BIOS, not find the drive and FAIL. I had some other issues I created with excessive sessions of "what does this do" so I did a clean install and fixed it that way, but I would go with arctic, do some digging and you might find a failing hot plug device.

  12. Hey all, this is a long post, but tried to explain everything I did.

I've been having a really hard time getting my eVGA e-GeForce FX5700LE, 256MB DDR W/TV OUT , DVI, AGP to work with MDK 10.

I just built a new machine:

    Motherboard: SY-KT600 DRAGON PLUS v.1.0 - VIA KT600 / 8237 Chipset

Processor: Athlon XP 2500+ 333Mhz FSB

    GPU: eVGA e-GeForce FX5700LE, 256MB DDR W/TV OUT , DVI, AGP

    Memory: Centon 512MB - 400Mhz DDR400 - Two (2)

Fresh clean install of MDK 10.  During the install, the installer doesn't even see my graphics card. It always wants to default to "vesa" I can't even get it to use "nv".

Ran the install twice. Same thing. Anyway, I left the graphics driver to vesa driver, and boot to command prompt.  Download and installed the latest nvida driver (no problem), vim'd the /etc/X11/XFree86-4 config file to match the readme file provided with the nvidia driver.  Run startx and nothing. blank screen. :wall:

    I'm lost. Please help.!!!!! :help:

BTW: had an older HP Pavillion 500n reformatted drive(removed winxp) and installed MDK10.  Went out, bought and older cheap-cheap GeForce 400mx PCI (no agp on board). Installed it, downloaded nvidia driver, installed kernel modules, ran nvidia driver (installed perfectly). vim'd XFree86-4 to spec, startx..... WOW worked first time.  happiest newbie in the world :cheesy:  :headbang: .  Fragin online with Enemy Territory.. NICE!!!!!!

I would really love to frag with my new machine, cuz bought UT'04 and really, really, really want to play that.

Thanks All, sorry 'bout the long post

    -SP

The KT600 chipset isn't actively support by the nVidia driver, try adding ...

    Option "NVAgp" "2"

to the device section of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, this forces the driver to use native Linux AGP/Gart drivers and ignore the nVidia AGP driver. Works for me.

If that doesn't do it we can take it further and check to see what device code/PnP I.D. that the driver is pickingup, but the card should be supported by the latest driver release.

  13. A thought just occurred to me.  In XMMSs Preferences.......Audio plugins.    What happens if you click on the line which reads      MPEG layer 1/2/3 Player..etc ???

Does the Enable plugin button depress or is it still raised.???

The same question about Ogg Vorbis Player.

If not then you should depress the button after you click on the line to highlight it.  and make sure to click Apply

I'll check that out John, thanks for the tip, that actually sounds promising (have to try later I'm stuck on a conference call with work to plan how we are going to respond to a big batch of MS patches being released over the next few days, man I love my Linux box).

  14. Sorry but I think this package

    ftp://mandrakeusers.com/pub/Misc/j2re-1.4.2_01-1mdk.i586.rpm

is easier to install than the sun's one: nothing to do.

[at least it's the impression I had the last time: I tried to install the sun one, it didn't work, then I installed the one above, it worked]

Might be an easier install but does it create the links to your browsers? That was the most tedious part to me.

  15. Also agree, I'm not fond of the linking on the windows partiton, so I think investing in even a small hard drive is a smart move, you can pick up 40 gigs for about $50 at Newegg if you are in the U.S.

And listen to bvc, he has been a big help to me on some obscure stuff, he knows the 'Drake.

  16. Xbob.  Please tell us what you have actually tried.....in detail.

You have a problem and waiting for a new build down the road is not going to help you at all because the present xmms 1.2.10 is already a good working item.  Most everybody else has xmms working OK so are you saying there is something wrong with xmms because YOU can't get it working ???

This is the reason we try to help people such as yourself when you have difficulties.

    1.  Have you installed an RPM of xmms 1.2.10 rather than a tar source form.  ???

    2.  Have you opened Kmixer and made certain that the sound controls for Volume AND  AND  AND also PCM have been set to near full level and they have not been muted.  If the greenish button or buttons are a dark green then they have been muted.  click on them and they should become a light green.

The PCM one in particular is the one most often overlooked because most people do not know what it is.

    3.  When you right click in the middle of xmms, a menu pops up, select Options.......Preferences which brings up another panel .  Look at "Output Plugin"  and if it is not already set to ALSA then click on the button and select it from the drop down menu.  Click APPLY then OK. from here on in you should be able to select some mp3 or Ogg-vorbis file and be able to hear music.

Try these procedures and tell us what resulted from each one.  If after all this you still have no sound then we can work on some other ideas.

By the way, when you log into your account, do you hear an intro melody ?? just a Yes or a No please. This question is not relevent to logging into ROOT.

    Like to hear from you.

    John.

Oh yes, sound works on everything but XMMS, and MP3 playback works in several other players. KMix is tweaked pretty well and my sounds play for system events and games, and I'm actually impressed how good the sound on Quake III is. I don't have the Alsa option in XMMS, and I have done RPMs and source, tried the soundwrapper stuff, etc...

I don't think XMMS is broken because "I can't get it working" but because many people are havnig the same problem, and because it seems to only effect this one application performing one function I would have to call that a bug. I'm open to more suggestions, but it could just be a bug between my hardware and this one player. And I should state again, I have no mad love for WinAmp, which is clearly the joy of XMMS for some people, so it's not overly traumatic for me. But if you have any ideas, I love to tinker....

  17. Simplesy way, right click on the KDE/Mandrake kicker button and choose menu editor, create a new entry where you want it and save it. The default icon for FF is saved as an .XPM so if you want to change it either find one (KDE-Look.org has some) or do what I did and convert the current one with the Gimp. Good luck.

And if you get over-zealous and screw up your menu with too many tweaks you can restore the default menus as well.
