  1. Hello all,

    I have moved into a 2 story old farm house. I have 3 computers:

    homebuilt PC mdk 10

    imac

    ibook

    all have nics, none have wireless, all have usb(probably 1.1). I am connected to direcway

    now with a 4 port asante router that works fine. I would like to connect the 2 macs wireless. I know nothing about wireless so I would like linksys part #(names) if possible. Linksys makes a part that will pickup a wireless signal and it connects to a computer via the onboard nic, the info states no software is needed. This would work fine. However, like I said I know nothing about wireless, and I don't want to purchase items that I don't need or won't work together. So, I think what I need is a

    wireless router and the component to pick up the signal that will connect into a nic.....

    Any info appreciated

  2. Hello,

    Has anyone used Directway satallite internet w/linux or any OS? The newer dishes do not require

    a dialup connection. I am not a gamer so the latency is not an issue. How is the speed vs

    DSL/cable? Is it dependable? Earthlink says they require directway to maintain a 90%+

    connection rate. I am moving to the 'boonies' and am leaving my city cable internet and

    tv. The tv dish works fine I understand, but I need info concerning the internet.

    any info appreciated

  3. devries,

    I changed /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and removed 'FontPath "unix/:-1". I also added the font paths.

    I still get the same error after logging in = 'Error opening display'. Like I said before, everything seems to work. I'll check some *.log files and see if I can get more info.

    I found this in XFree86.0.log (last line?) I founf nothing w/EE......

    > cat XFree86.0.log | grep WW

    (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.

    (WW) Option "XkbOptions" requires an string value

    (WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/encodings".

  4. Hello,

    I'm not sure what these errors mean:

    Aug 19 06:39:29 localhost xfs: ignoring font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont (unreadable)

    Aug 19 06:39:29 localhost xfs: ignoring font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/Type1 (unreadable)

    Aug 19 06:39:29 localhost xfs: ignoring font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/ttf (unreadable)

    Aug 19 06:39:29 localhost xfs: ignoring font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/pcf_drakfont:unscaled (unreadable)

    I checked these directories, the files are there....

    I boot to CLI (init 3). The very last line displayed AFTER I log in and hit enter is:

    Error opening display.

    Everything seems to work fine, I use MDK10 official, any ideas?

    TIA

  5. I have a Canon A60 camera. I am trying to get gtkam (gphoto2) to start when I plug in

    the camera (usb). Here is the output:

    I don't understand this error. GConf is not started at the beginning.

  6. Hello,

    I now live in a home that I have strung cable to share our cable connection. In our new home

    I DON'T want to do this! My current router is an asante 4 port. My boxes are:

    Home built pc with mdk10 (This will be the base unit w/router & wifi)

    imac = (no slot for wifi) has USB and NIC

    ibook = USB and NIC

    what are my options? I want reliability above all!

    TIA

  7. tyme,

    Yes I want to move all of /home/me/ from hdb > hda. Would both drives be mounted at boot?

    Both are linux drives, no windoze on this computer or 'vfat' systems. Could I backup to a CD, then restore to the new drive? Hda is a 20g that at one time was win98se, and will be used now for a test of mdk10. After I see if everything works, I will remove the 20g hda(master) and move the 80g hdb

    (slave) > as master hda and install a faster 40g as hdb. Then install mdk10 on hda. Hdb will be for pics/mp3's and backups....

    TIA

  8. bvc,

    thanks for the reply. here is my current lilo.conf:

    boot=/dev/hda

    map=/boot/map

    vga=normal

    default=linux

    keytable=/boot/us.klt

    prompt

    nowarn

    timeout=100

    message=/boot/message

    menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw

    ignore-table

    image=/boot/vmlinuz

    label=linux

    root=/dev/hdb1

    initrd=/boot/initrd.img

    append="devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi"

    read-only

    image=/boot/vmlinuz

    label=failsafe

    root=/dev/hdb1

    initrd=/boot/initrd.img

    append="failsafe devfs=nomount hdc=ide-scsi"

    read-only

    other=/dev/hda1

    label=windows

    table=/dev/hda

    other=/dev/fd0

    label=floppy

    unsafe

    The 'other=/dev/hda1' would be changed to something similar to the default only using hda instead of hdb, correct?

    Thanks

  9. Hello,

    My setup is:

    hda=win98 20g

    hdb=mdk9.0 80g

    I want to install mdk10 on hda and remove win98. Will the install program see mdk9.0 on hdb

    and configure lilo properly, or is there something I should do so I can boot into either OS?

    TIA

  10. did you check alsamixer and made sure the rear speakers are not muted?

    try here : http://www.alsa-project.org/documentation.php

    then

    Sound Card Matrix & INSTALL documentation > choose Creative labs 'click Go'

    find your card click 'details.'

    I remember somewhere there is the code for turning on the rear speakers. It is placed in the

    .asoundrc file in your home directory. This is where I am coming to if/when I have problems.

    Hope this helps
