  1. 1. Yes, CUPS is running 2. I have re-run Turboprint setup 3. I also check the parallel cable at both ends 4. Both the "cfg" files are present in /etc/turboprint and both files seem to be okay but then I'm not knowledgable about the correct content. (See below) 5. I'm wondering if the problem is somewhere in the hetwork setup. I think I mentioned that I have a notebook wireless feeding into this desktop. I appreciate your time and help with my problem. The system.cfg: TP_CUPS=1 TP_LANGUAGE=en TP_CHARSET=C TP_INSTALLATIONSTATE=0 TPBIN_BROWSER=konqueror TPFILE_PRINTCAP=/etc/printcap TPPATH_CONFIG=/etc/turboprint TPPATH_SHARE=/usr/share/turboprint TPPATH_SPOOL=/var/spool/lpd TPPATH_BIN=/usr/bin TPPATH_FILTERS=/usr/share/turboprint/lib TPPATH_DOC=/usr/share/turboprint/doc TPPATH_LOG=/var/log TPPATH_TEMP=/tmp TPPATH_MAN=/usr/share/man TPPATH_CUPSDRIVER=/usr/share/cups/model TPPATH_CUPSSETTINGS=/etc/cups/ppd TPPATH_CUPSFILTER=/usr/lib/cups/filter TPPATH_CUPSFILTER64=/usr/lib64/cups/filter TPOWN_SPOOLDIR=lp TPMOD_SPOOLDIR=0755 TPOWN_SPOOLFILE=lp TPMOD_SPOOLFILE=0640 [Turboprint_Config_File] [turbo1] Default=1 Name="Canon_i560" Short="tp0" Port="device" Devicename="parallel:/dev/lp0" Filename="/tmp/turboprint.prn" Remoteprinter="" Remoteserver="" Remoteuser="" Remotepassword="" Remoteworkgroup="" Remoteip="" Remotesocket="" Remoteuri="" Driver="Canon_i560" Colormode=2 Cartridge=0 Paper=0 Quality=1 Pagesize=4 Customsize=5000,7000 Feed=0 Tray=0 Duplex=0,0 Copies=1 Dithering=0 Truematch=1 Mirror=0 Usercolor=0 Brightness=0 Contrast=0 Screengamma=180 Inkvolume=0 Colorsaturation=0 Intensity_KCMY=0,0,0,0 Limit_KCMY=0,0,0,0 Inklimit=0 Bright_KCMY=0,0,0,0 UCR=0 TAC=0 Colorspace=0 CMYKspace=0 Intent=1 Greytone_AB=0,0 RefLight=6500 GS_X_Scale=100 GS_Y_Scale=100 GS_X_Offset=0 GS_Y_Offset=0 GS_Screen_Lpi=0 GS_Buffer=0 PIC_Ignore_Margins=0 PIC_Position=0,0 PIC_Size=7000,0 PIC_Center=1,1 PIC_Aspect=1 A2PS_Defaults=0 A2PS_Landscape=0 A2PS_Borders=1 A2PS_Headers=1 A2PS_Columns=1 Landscape=0 Number_Up=1 Image_X=1 Image_Y=1 Image_Scaling=100 Use_Image_Scaling=0 Image_DPI=300 Use_Image_DPI=0 Text_CPI=10 Text_LPI=6 Pretty_Print=0
  2. Okay, thanks. I guess I'll stick with Mandriva, but I'm sure frustrated with the printer problem. I may bite the bullet and get an Epson printer but if I do, my wife will hit the ceiling. Jerry
  3. I have an integrated Intel 3D AGP Graphics card in a Dell Dimension 2300, according to the specs. Here's what comes up on the video card descrition in the control panel: Identification: Vendor: ‎Intel Corp. Description: ‎82845 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] Media class: ‎DISPLAY_VGA Connection Bus: ‎PCI Bus PCI #: ‎0 PCI device #: ‎2 PCI function #: ‎0 Vendor ID: ‎32902 Device ID: ‎9570 Sub vendor ID: ‎4136 Sub device ID: ‎317 Misc Module: ‎Card:Intel 845
  4. I'm confused myself. At the end of booting, I get the command line rather than the kdm (I guess, because I'm not familiar with the achronym kdm; I am using kde).
  5. I have an annoying situation with the boot loader on 2006. It rarely opens with a graphical login. I get the text login on the first boot most times. I've switched form LILO to GRUB but that didn't fix it. I've reconfigured boot on the control panel but it stills does the same two-time trick. Any ideas on how I can fix this? Jerry
  6. I'd like to trade the canon for an epson, but that's not in my current budget. BTW, I see that you are using Kubuntu. How do you like it and why do you use it? I have the Kubuntu CD but have not installed it. I could put it on my windows partition if it's worth the effort. Jerry
  7. I've read many of the posts regarding printer setup and also the FAQ's. I've worked through the printer setup on MCC, but I still can't get my Canon i560 to work. It worked fine until I upgraded to LE 2006. The other thing I did was to go to DSL and a home network. Everything works as it should except the printer. I even had my wife's laptop running WinXP sharing this printer until a day or so ago. Now the #$% won't work. I've changed something but I don't know what. I'm looking for suggestion on how to get this Canon working. Did I say I have Turboprint installed? It's worked fine in the past. Jerry
  8. That's a good idea which I may do, however, I finally got WinXP back up and running. My drive is only a 30gb. I had given the bulk of it to Windows and I thought the Linux partitions were beginning to fill. That's why I reduced the size of the Windows partition and got into trouble. Except for the fact that my wife has Windows running on a notebook, and we're networking I'd probably shake off Windows on my computer. If I can be sure her computer will talk to mine running on Linux then I'll probably cut loose from Window. By the way, I think I read someplace that the swap partition is not necessary, today, with the greater memory in computers. I have 512 mb. What do you think about the need for a swap partition? Jerry
  9. Yves. . . Thanks for your reply. I read your thread and I'm afraid I'm not computer/linux savy enough to understand and execute the process you explain. I'll probably limp along with what I have, or just wipe the drive and start over with a fresh Mandriva 2006 install. Jerry
  10. I destroyed the windows partition on my dual boot computer when I tried to resized the c partition. I'm turning blue trying to restore windows wihich I don't use much anyway. So, I'm thinking dedicating this computer to Mandriva Linux. My question is: how do a safely expand the Linux partitions to the complete hard drive without destroying Linux as I did Windows? Jerry
  11. I did forget to defrag until it was too late. I don't know what all this means: "you should not touch externally an NTFS partition which has enabled the embedded NTFS file encryption and/or compression," but I've learned my lesson. I'm still strying to reinstall windows through the "repair" option and it hasn't worked, so far. I did go through the Linux install repair including the boot part. The boot still doesn't work, so I have more work to do. Any more suggestions will be appreciated. Jerry
  12. I resized the NFS partition to give more space to Linuix, and not I cannot boot into Windows. I have windows backed up (as well as Linux). I also have a reinstall CD for windows. So, I used the Windows CD reinstall and repair program. It seemed to go throught the process okay but when I restart the computer and the dual boot screen comes up it won't load Windows. I get a screen with small rectangles. Anyway, is there a way I can repair the boot without reinstalling Mandriva. Forttunately, Mandriva 2006 is running fine. 13. Disregard this inquiry. . . I solved the problem immediately after the post. Everything is working great. Jerry
  14. I've searched and run across some notes on my question but do not fully understand what I've read. I just had a DSL modem installed and a wireless router. All run nicely on Windows but I use Mandriva on my desktop. The DSL modeum is a DrayTek set up by my provider. The wireless rounter is a Linksys Wireless-G. I'm running Mandriva 2006. I've tried setting up the connection through the lan configuration on the control center. I reach the point of "Installing Programs" but I don't know what programs it's asking for. I got none with the DSL modem. I do have a set-up cd with the router which I suppose I should try. I'll appreciate your help.
  15. I hope somebody has a solution. I've been using KShowmail for some time to preview emails on the server. I installed Mandriva 2006 a couple of days ago, upgrading from 10.2. It was easy, very easy, and everything works fine except for KShowmail. The server sign-on authorization fails. I emailed Eggert, one of the developers and he says its a general problem and suggested this: "A lot of problems seem to disapear when you try this: Control Center Security & Privacy Encryption Activate TLS when supported by Server "disable the last option (remove the checkmark) "If this does not help, there is no solution at the moment. Kshowmail only uses the standard pop3 kio slave provided by KDE, without any own protocol support." I followed those instructions but the problem was not solved. One note on this form implies that there is a feature on Kmail that allows previewing on the server but I have been unable to find any such feature. If anybody has an idea on how I can fix the problem or find onther program that allows previewing on the server, please let me know. Jerry
  16. Okay, and thanks. I'm on my way with i586. Jerry
  17. I know I'm revealing my ignorance but I gotta find out which platform I have. When ordering 10.2, I assumed I had i586. Everything has worked well, except KDE crashed a few times. I'm about to order Mandriva Linux 2006, and I want to make sure I'm getting the correct package. I have a Dell Dimension 2300, with a Celeron processor. The chip set is an Intel 845GL according to the specs. I don't see a reference to i586 or x86-64, in the specs. I assume one of the system reporting programs will tell me but I haven't been able to find such an animal. Jerry
  18. Okay, thanks. . . I was afraid of that. Guess I'll have to stick with ftp.
  19. Per your prompt I just checked and it is not set to deny all, and "host.allow" is set to all. One thing I'm not clear about is whether the secure ftp protocols work on all servers. I believe the ISP I use does have ssh enabled. The other thing I wonder about is that I have to supply a password to open my web page, but when I use ssh I have a password for that service but I'm not asked for a password for the web site. I tired setting the authentication for ssh the same as the web site but that didn't work either. Any more ideas?
  20. Here's my situation: I've been trying to access my web page using the various secure file transfer protocols. None work. I'm running Mandriva 10.2 on kde 3.3. I have set up Fish with a password, which attempts to access my web page but I get a message that access is denied. I'm using a local ISP, and I've been unable to find out if their server supports SSH. I assume this is necessary before any secure file transfer works. Right? FTP works fine but I understand it is wide open for intrusion. Jerry
  21. I've tried using Quantas, Screem, Bluefish, Nvu, Kbear and all them give me fits trying to download my web site. Quantas worked fine for a while then went whacko and I've been unable to download my website files. Since there seems to be a common problem I am beginning to think it maybe KDE that's fouling things up. I'm wondering if any one, here, has had similar problems. I'm running Mandriva 10.2 and KDE, 3.3. I've looked at the various forums on the related web sites and have not found a solution. Kbear works most of the time though it's not uncommon that I have to try several times to get it to download my web site folders and files. Jerry
  22. I found the link in KShowmail. It works fine. What I was hoping (because I'm lazy) was that I could insert a link inside Kmail or Thunderbird, that I could click on to start KShowmail. That way I would have only one app up. Anyway, I got it working. Thanks. Jerry
  23. I've been looking high and low for an easy way to check email on the server before downloading (a la PocoMail in Windows). I find KShowmail is just the ticket for me, however, it's a bit awkward switching back and forth between KShowmail and Kmail, or Thunderbird (which I am currently using). Is there anyway to link KShowmail directly to either Kmail or Thunderbird? Jerry
  24. I am still battling rpm updates. I have successfully downloaded Easy-Urpmi, and have made a couple of updates, however, things are still not as they should be. Originally, on the Media manager all the distribution cd's (1 thru 6) were listed plus "main" and "update." After deleting the headers in preparation for downloading from Easy-Urpmi, I regained only "main" and "update" headers. I've tried "adding" the CD's back in though I'm not sure I need them. When I select either "Official Update" or "Distribution Sources." I get "HTTP range error." Also, when I've tried updating kde files, I get a dependency message saying that "kdelibs-common" is required. I've looked on the kde web site but can't find anything there. Where and how do I get the file(s)? Jerry
  25. Thanks. By the way, when I downloaded from Simple-Urpmi there was a line at the end that looked like an instruction. Don't recall exactly what is said but something such as "write: [ a command line which I don't recall what]. So, I tried, as root, and got the message that permission was denied. I guess it must have had something to do with the system or kernal or whatever but I couldn't execute it if I was supposed to. For the "noobee", there's lots of mysterious messages and instructions, but maybe I'll eventually figure it all out.
