I followed you instructions, downloaded the rpm and when I installed it I got the message that is was already installed which I thought was the case when I started. Actually, I believe I have version 1.250 installed. Where do I go from here? Guess I'll reboot and see if that changes anything.

Couldn't find an answer to this on search or on the webmin site. When I put https://localhost:10000/ in the address bar webmin grinds away but doesn't load. I've loaded webmin before but have not actually worked it. I checked the firewall and access to ssh server is open. Any suggestions?

This is getting embarrasing. Every time I try to set up a home network I screw up something else on my Mandriva 2006. This time I added an account for my wife's laptop. Then when I went back to my account it was locked and I couldn't unlock it. So, I deleted my wife's account but that didn't help. After rebooting and messing around I got my account running but I've lost my personal setup and importantly all my Bookmarks on Firefox. I tried restoring from my external backup hd and I cannot access the catalogs. I can see them on the files structures but cannot activate the backup on MCC. Can anybody get me out of the mess?

I have started Webmin from root. I get the log-in asking for user name and password, so I use my user account user name and root password which is not accepted. Then I try a couple of passwords that I have set for Mandriva login and for securioty administration. Nothing works. How do I change the password or set the password to get into Webmin?

Use tpsetup and tpconfig from Turboprint to setup your printer(s) properly . You may want to check "advanced" settings in the color tab to get the vivid colours back. If you open printerdrake after that, you'll get your settings reset to "mirror page make it pale", again!

Thanks to your suggestion that I use "tpconfig" I got the printer to print at the proper ink level, I still have a mirror image, though. How do I get rid of that?

UPDATE: I found the mirror toggle on MCC, and now my Canon i560 seems to be working okay. If I have futher problems I'll be back here for sure. Thanks a million for all your help.

I back with my on-going printer problem. This is the darndest on-again, off-again situation. I'm running 2006 with a totally fresh install. I have the latest TurboPrint version downloaded and setup. I have configured MCC printer numerous times and still cannot get the printer to print properly. It prints very light and backwords. It works just fine on WinXP, so the problem must be in my set up on Mandriva. When I go to file/print/ I cannot pull up my printer (canon_i560_turboprint) I get "postscript printer." When I go to MCC, it is properly listed but on port "0." the physical parallel port on my computer that the printer is connected to is port 1. But I can't select port one on the MCC setup, or I haven't found it. What does work on Mandriva which 2006 recognizes is CanonBJC1000. It runs my canon i560, but the print is so small I can hardly read it. If I could increase the type size I would stick wioth that configuration. This whole printer things is carzy and driving my crazy.

I'll appreciate any and all help you can offer.

I do get 2.6.12-12mdk at the command "uname -r." If I do an "install" rather than upgrading 10.2, will I lose my data files? I do have backups of everything. Hey, I just remembered: when I was having so much trouble, earlier, I did a system restore from a few weeks ago. It could be that I corruped the system by overwriting the 2006 upgrade. So, maybe I better do a new install, then restore the data files. What do you think? By the way I did a complete update from easy-urpm.

This whole things started when I switched to DSL, and installed a wireless home network with a laptop and desktop. I couldn't get the printer to work consistantly, Then messed around trying to get Samba working and everything went whaco. I'm running Linux on the desktop and windows on the laptop.

I guess I'm going to start over with a new install and hope that I can get my data files back in good shape

Just finished a clean install and it worked beautifully. My printer's working and I'm getting the proper 2006 id etc., etc. As far as I know I didn't lose any files in the process. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Well, I did all the above, and got the message that everything is up to date. I'm not familiar with the term"repositories" but I did check the Software Media Manager, and all seems to be okay (i.e., all the cd's are listed plus "update source," "main," and "updates."

I have other problems, though, and I don't know whether this is place to post them, but I'll generalized them. I get a bunch of "failed" signs when logging off Mandriva and I get a number of them when I log on. Here's a rundown of the "failed" notations:

1. 'chown' ldap:ldap:i nvalid user

2. user 'maned'' unknown

3. dhcpd

4. squid (/etc/rc5.d/S90 squid: line 53: 23794 aborted

5.httpd: Syntax error on line 22 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

There's more to several of those failed message but this give you the idea.

I'll appreciate any ideas you may have on fixing thses, or should I post a new message here?

Thanks for your help. I still haven't found the file you refer to. I have everything updated, I believe (and I subscribe to Mandriva onlone for updating. I'm still getting the 10.2 reference rather than 2006, but I guess I'm not going to worry about it. Jerry

Okay. . . I've looked for that file in MCC, and on Mandriva and can't find it. Where to I find "mandriva-release-2006.0-2.0.20060mdk?"

I don't know that this is a problem but I've noticed after installing 2006, that I still get the 10.2 LE 2005 title on the login version number and also on the top of MCC. Seems as though Mandriva 2006 should be showing. I'm wondering if I actually have 2006 installed.

Okay, I'll give it another try. I don't know if SSL modules are installed but I okayed the dependencies on the webmin install. My deeper problem at the moment is that my 2006 is really screwed up. I tried reinstalling (upgrade) and it hung up on an error which I have queried the "Installation" section of this formum. I'm thinking about doing a fresh install but I've read that some others are having problems installing 2006, so I'm going to hang back a bit and see what developes.

Update. . . I'm still struggling with setting up a home network. I've got it working okay on winXP to winXP, but can't get my Mandriva 2006 and winXP working together. Samba supposed to be simple but I guess I'm too simple minded to make it work. Really all I wanted to do was set up my printer connected to my desktop to work with my wife's laptop. I'll keep working at it.

I must be nuts to spend this much time trying to get Mandriva 2006 working. Anyway, I've posted my problems before but now I have a new one. Because of various things not working, I've re-install 2006 a couple of time. On my third attempt I get this message:

pstat: unable to connect to server: network unreadable. Use of uninitalized value in pattern match (m//) at /user/bin/foomatic-configure line 1395.

What do I do next?

Well, something's really screwed up with my Mandriva 2006, or my computer. I cannot load Konqueror or my Home files. Firefox works okay I can load MCC orkay, although it is really sluggish. When I try to long Konqueror or Home, they appear to be loading in the task bar but then stop and nothing appears.

I thought I would try Webmin to edit smb.conf, which is recommened in MCC rather than Swat. According to directions I can use any browser and enter https:/localhost/webmin and then logo in as root. I tried that with Firefox and got the message that "connection to localhost refused.." Is there an address form that alllows a root login?

I've been using MCC and root into Kate to edit smb.conf. I'm not familiar with SWAT. After setting up Samba I tried printing from the notebook through the desktop and got an error message saying that the printer need to be enabled. When I go to the properties screen of the printer, the enable option is unavailable (i.e., grayed out). Also,

I tried exploring the net connection on XP, "My Networks" which lists serveral Samba connections (from my multiple smb.conf edits). I get a login screen, which recyles back indicating that I'm not using the proper password but I enter the passwords (I've tried a couple) but none is accepted. Other things are happending, too. For instance the printer configuration screen in MCC, no longer lists the printer I'm using (Canon i560 with TurboPrint), and when I try configuring it the screen hangs. Perhaps I have a machine problem but XP, works as it should so I tend to think that the Linux problems are isolated to Mandriva and not with the computer, itself.

When I login to Linux, the CUPS startup begins but does not complete or perhaps I'm too impatient waiting for it but after a minute or so, I assume it's hung. I'll try again and let it grind for awhile to see if it does continue to load.

Okay, I'm back on Mandriva. I let the CUPS startup sit for six minutes when it finally move on with a note that it was rebuilding something (I didn't write it down).

Now back to my Samba challenge. I'll keep trying so if you have some adivce I'm all ears.

Give an idiot a new tool and he's bound to break it. So, I have. I'm running 2006, trying to set up a home wireless network on Samba (I've tried for a week and too many hours.) I've reached a point where my Linux system is protesting. Right now I cannot boot past CUPS. It hangs.

Yes, I read the Samba FAQ, and a lot of othr Samba how-to's. The problem with a neophyte like me is that there are so many variables in the networking system, one bad entry messes up the whole deal.

I'd like to clear the decks and start from scratch but the only way I know of doing that is by reinstalling Mandriva 2006. I've been using Mandrake distros for a number of years and I don't think I've had more trouble than with this version. It installed easily but I've had a number of things working improperly, but I really got in trouble with Samba.

At this point all I want to do is to get my wife's WindowsXP, notebook talking to the printer on my desktop which runs primarily on Linux. I'm writing this from XP, where I'll probably stick until I find a clear path to getting Mandriva networking probbly.

The notebook is a Dell with a wireless card beamed into a Linksys wireless router, pluged into a DSL modem.

I'm open to any and all advice.

Thanks. . . I used Kate to access the samba.conf file. I have Samba setup, kinda, but I still haven't got the printer working and can't get our Windows notebook talking to my Linux box. The Samba portal shows on the Win box. There seems to be a problem with the password, though I've set it but I've got something haywired. SMB4K has the appropriate printer listed. In fact it has several printers from my various trials at setting up the printer. I'm at a loss as to where to go from here. Any suggestions?

I'm trying to set up Samba following the step-by-step instruction on this forum. I was doing fine until I got to this step:

"Now comes the hard part, and for this we go to the Samba Configuration file. Open up /etc/samba/smb.conf and scroll all the way down to the bottom. Read the comments and select the type of share which you would like.

Then modify the examples to fit your specific needs."

When a try to open "/etc/samba/smb.conf" as root, I get the "permission denied" line. So, how do I get past this?

I think I've solved the problem. I reconfigured the boot graphics in MCC. It was set for text and I changed it to verbose. The boot went to the graphics login the a couple of time straight, so I have my fingers crossed. Thanks for all your time. Jerry

Drats!!!! My problem raised it's ugly head again this morning. It's interesting that the first boot goes to a text login which responses with an error when I enter "startx" The I shut down and reboot and it always goes to a graphical login on this second try.

I tried "/var/log/Xorg.* again and got the symbol ">" that's all. I get graphics on the second boot, always, and I get the text login on the first boot. It's very aggrivating.

When I enter "startx" at the text login, I get a string of messages "unable to open /usr/X11R6/lib . . . . "

and at the bottom "Fatal server error: no screens found."

Anyway, I did the telinit 3 at the text login and on the Konsole after logging in. On the text login, I got the message that there is no such file. Same with telinit 5. By the way, I tried going on the Konsole a bit ago and was stopped by "DCOP." I've not seen that before and have no idea what DCOP is. However, after rebooting, I can go on to Konsole. I must say that since upgrading 10.2 to 2006, a number of weird things are going on. For instance, I can no longer press the "Windows" key to bring up the START menu. Then my Canon printer with TurboPrint stopped working until I learned that TurboPrint had to be upgraded to work with 2006. Pardon the rant. . . I'll be happy when I get this graphical login thing right.

I'm still looking for a fix with this printer problem. I keep trying new configurations, resetting things and am still without a working printer which works fine on Windows. So, the problem is definitly somewhere in the setup. Jerry
