  1. Hmmm - I guess I could wait for 9.1 I just seems a shame to waste all these lovely rpms that I've got. It will be a lot easier to to it all with a reinstall of Mandrake though
  2. Must admit I didn't - wouldn't I get loads of dependency problems with doing this? Counterspy - I was quite confused, but I'll trawl through what you said and figure it out at somne point when I have more energy :)
  3. I've tried a couple of times to upgrade to KDE 3.1 - mainly for the libraries that programs use as I actually use fluxbox as my WM Now that I have all of the mandrake specific rpms from the Linux Format DVD - I'm finnaly keen to get it sorted. My problem is dependencies. When I try to install the rpms - I get loads of failed dependencies, but when I try to resolve these dependencies with rpms downloaded from rpmfind.net - I get loads of conflicts. How do I upgrade to KDE 3.1? I guess a few people have done this - any tips?

    Ogle and Alsa

woo hoo! make clean and then starting from scratch with the configure/compile worked perfectly! Thanks - I now have Ogle running
  5. No problems for me in galeon or mozilla - works fine

    Ogle and Alsa

Sorry - after your suggestions, I uninstalled the RPMS and tried again from the source. I'll try make clean - seems like a good idea

    Ogle and Alsa

I have the latest verisions of everything - and I can't find a man page for oglerc - man oglerc does nothing - surely this file is for use post compile? I haven't even got that far. Ah well - I guess I just can't play DVDs on my computer - I've tried getting xine to work and Mplayer but with equally annoying and mysterious problems

    Ogle and Alsa

using make after ./configure --disable-alsa returns the following error: ./libogleao/.libs/libogleao.al(ogle_ao.lo): In function `ao_drivers': /home/paul/Downloads/Ogle/ogle-0.9.1/libogleao/ogle_ao.c:52: undefined reference to `ao_alsa_open' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[1]: *** [ogle_audio] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/paul/Downloads/Ogle/ogle-0.9.1/ac3' make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 The results of the configure did specify that alsa was not going to be enabled. Any thoughts?

    Ogle and Alsa

Recently installed Ogle based on a tutorial that I think I found from a link on this site (last night was so long ago - I can't be sure  ) but whenever I try to run ogle everything seems to be going ok until I get this error: [ogle_alsa]: Opening device: default !#!!!!#![ogle_alsa]: error while opening alsa. : No such file or directory FATAL[ogle_audio]: failed opening the alsa audio driver at default Alsa is installed - whenever I try to enable it from the services in drakconf, it says that alsa driver isn't running Any ideas how I can fix this? I'd love to be able to play DVDs on this machine
  10. I've been folowing the instructions on http://www.xs4all.nl/~hanb/software/fluxbo...x/mandrake.html and when I perform the following step: rpm --rebuild fluxbox-0.1.14-6mdk.src.rpm I get the following error: /usr/lib/rpm/rpmb: No such file or directory What's that all about?
  11. Is this really true? Of course Linux is powerful, but is it easy? t's easy enough to get some web browsing done and write the occasional letter in a word processor (although not so easy to open up a .doc that a friend may send you) but is it really easy to do all the day to day things people do on their Windows machines everyday? Plus do people really care about OSs - most people aren't that bothered about windows that they will want to change - why would they? For all it's faults wnidows is easy to use. Any marketing should be targeted at business - they have reasons to switch to Linux on the desktop (and the server): cost, reliability etc - and when your average office worker uses Linux at work, who knows? they may want to use it at home...
  12. My printer has stopped working - I came home from work one day to find out a piece of paper half way out of my printer with half a page printed on it. I asked my wife about it and she said that she didn't know what caused it - apparently she would print something and then a while later the printer would "randomly" print something else. My setup is that I have a Pentium machine with 32MB RAM acting as a server to the LAN - it provides internet access and it shares the printer. It is running Mandrake 9.0 When I go into printerdrake on that computer and try to configure it - the following two odd things happen: 1) it identifies the printer as an HP - it is an Epson Stylus Color 400 2)When I tell it that it's identification of the printer is wrong - i get the following message appear every few seconds: lpstat: Unable to connect to server: Connection refused Any ideas as to what could have caused this? The printer has never been absolutely trouble free - but this is the first time it's refused to work. I have tried printing directly from the server machine and nothing happens - although CUPS thinks there is a print job.
  13. Gave the linking a go - didn't work :-( Thanks anyway
  14. All packages are Mandrake ones - some may be cooker I can't remember. rpm -Uvh results in the same error. The package I am trying to install is called: libstdc++-2.95.2-12mdk.i586.rpm At least, this is what I want if I want to install the qtopiadesktop rpm. I cannot find a location for downloading the source for qtopiadesktop - so I can't try to install that from source - and I'm not 100% sure I actually want to install the other package. I only tried because the qtopiadesktop install said I need the files it provided
  15. Don't exaclty know - but I used to have XP on my laptop and I found the networking to be rubbish. It could ony l see my Linux desktop if I restarted samba and then, only by it's IP address. When I went back to 2000 (also based on NT) there were no problems. It could just be that networking on XP is broken - and that's not an anti MS rant, just my experience
  16. I am trying to upgrade my instalation of qtopia desktop. When I try to install the rpm I get the following error: libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 is needed by qtopia-desktop-1.6.0-1 So I dutifully locate an rpm which provides this and attempt to install - and get: file /usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 from install of libstdc++-2.95.2-12mdk conflicts with file from package libstdc++2.10-2.96-0.80mdk I wondered about removing libstdc++2.10-2.96-0.80mdk and replacing it with libstdc++-2.95.2-12mdk but a lot of apps depend on the former package - does anyone know would this be a safe replacement or would I break half my apps?
  17. I wasn't compaining about user unfriendliness - I'm happy with the way things are, but it's not the most obvious approach for some one coming from a windows system. The thing is, that whilst you are right about people adapting to a different system, why would anyone if they are used to windows and perceie the linux way to be more complex. None of this is to say that I think linux should be more windows like - or that we should sacrifice stability and security for stability. Actually more GUI config tools and being able to do more without needing to use the command line would be a huge step. This doesn't bother me - I'm thinking of the future Linux newbies. I love linux anbd I love fluxbox - and, for the those who said I could install icons on fluxbox, I already knew that - and I don't want to! One of the things I love about fluxbox is the simplicity.
  18. I run fluxbox, which doesn't support icons - although I think there are some dockable apps which do similar things. The problem with simply saying that we should all mount manually is that, if we ever want linux to succeed on the desktop, it has to be easier to use - this means automatic mounting of removable media. Your average PC user will not want to mount drives as they need them
  19. Is this the kernel that came with 9.0 or an updated version from since then? I saw a post about some kind of fix, but it said it was experimental - not sure how old that post was If it's an update - where do I get it from?
  20. I am tempted to disable supermount until it really is properly and permanently fixed (if ever!) I hope this isn't a dumb question (although I think it probably will be) but am I right in thinking that it only affects things like CDROM and floppies etc... My hard drive is not affected by supermount?
  21. One of my favourite games is championship manager. CM4 has just been or is about to be released and the official line about linux is.... It should run in wine This is not supported and means that I'll probably never get to play the latest version of a brilliant game on Linux - I refuse to try wineX. Sometimes it's tempting, but I also think it does more harm than good, so I will steer cleer of it. RTCW is an amazing game that I can play natively - so at least one of my favourite games can be played at home on my desktop
  22. bit confused - where does profile.d fit in? The example you gave didn't include it, but you mention it
  23. How do I set system wide environment variables? I currently have some stuff in my .bashrc - classpath, path and others, but I want to know how to set soemthing up at a more fundamental level than that. For example, I can only run Java applications either by specifying the location of my Java install in the apps config, or by running it in a shell that has access to what I set in .bashrc If I want to run a Java app from an icon or similar - it doesn't look at .bashrc and therefore never finds the java command. I hope this makes sense :D
