  1. Ok Lord kenneth, I guess I'll just stick to the main kernel version (even though it came in at about 16 megs, as opposed to the BOOT version that was about 6.5 megs-can't get my head round why that would be, especially as I was under the impression that actual kernel's where quite small, not that the size matters (pun intended :D), just one of those curious things that i've picked up on during my reading). And thanks for that bvc, as things are pretty ???? at the moment, worst case scenario is to have to download 9.2 or have another go at 10 beta 2 (or whatevers around), so when I've got a little more time I'll give it a go and see what happens (getting ready for work - again :() again, thanks for the continues support. regards John
  2. So, does anyone know how I (and RanchNachos) get round this conflict's problem with the libuser files? I'm not sure because it looks like a different problem from the normal failed dependencies problem that you see when installing rpm's sometimes? or is it just a case of installing the conflicting libuser files seperately? because I should have thought that I'd still get the conflict? Any idea's please anyone? regards John p.s. For Lord Kenneth. Thanks for that. With hindsight, that's an idea that I hadn't considered. I wonder if it's better to use the "BOOT" version? or to have both?? Because surely if the "BOOT" kernel is the one used when booting/installing/liveCD etc that's the one to use as it would then be the main kernel to boot (am I making sense??) the mandrake from.
  3. The next question is how do I sort this out ??? When I try this "urpmi kernel-2.6.2.1mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm" I get this "Preparing... ################################################## Installation failed: file /usr/lib/libuser/libuser_files.so from install of libuser-0.51.7-8mdk conflicts with file from package libuser1-0.51-6mdk file /usr/lib/libuser/libuser_ldap.so from install of libuser-0.51.7-8mdk conflicts with file from package libuser1-0.51-6mdk file /usr/lib/libuser/libuser_shadow.so from install of libuser-0.51.7-8mdk conflicts with file from package libuser1-0.51-6mdk" So if I try this "urpmi kernel-BOOT-2.6.2.1mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm" I get this "Preparing... ################################################## 1:kernel-BOOT-2.6.2.1mdk ################################################## /sbin/installkernel: illegal option -- s Usage: installkernel -[NCLlngarhcq] KERNEL_VERSION BOOTIMAGE MAPFILE -C: Don't copy config files -l: Add a lilo entry -i: Dont generate Initrd files -n: Don't launch lilo. -N: Don't add entry to bootloader -g: Add a Grub entry. -y: Add a yaboot entry. -L: Don't do link to default /boot/vmlinuz and /boot/System.map -d: Don't autodetect boot loader. -a: Autodetect boot loader. -r: Features for RPM post install. -c: Don't copy files. -q: Be quiet. -h: This help. error: execution of %post scriptlet from kernel-BOOT-2.6.2.1mdk-1-1mdk failed, exit status 2" regards John (still stumped!)
  4. Hey RanchNachos, mandrake is a french company, so why wouldn't they use a french mirror? bvc and everyone else who might know. I'm sorry to labour the point, but what's the difference between the "kernel-2.6.2" and "kernel-BOOT-2.6.2" ? Im really in the dark. I've downloaded both, and don't follow why the kernel-2.6.2 is 17.3 megs, but the kernel-BOOT-2.6.2 is only 6.5 megs. So which one should I use ???? Or maybe the question should be which one has worked for you ??? regards John

    BITTORRENT

Erm, so from all that, I understand the bit about clicking the link from the torrent file that comes from mandrake. but where do I get the IP address from where the torrent is actually or going to come from, because thus far, I've just cancelled it when it's told me that it's gonna take something like 448 hours 49 minutes 33 seconds or whatever. I'm patient, but not that patient. Sh1t, that would work out at like nearly 20 days or so, just to get, what, about 1.8 gig's of download for all 3 cd's of 9.2 - on a half a meg broadband - not all the time my arse points downward. They can stuff that. they either sell me a powerpack dvd in US$$$'s or I'll just stick with 9.1 till it's too ancient to do anything with, then uninstall it and go with gentoo (IMO urpmi is heaps better than rpm, but portage makes urpmi look like a pile of shite, and debian apt-get like a rather large fart stain). Nah, nearly 20 days, that CAN'T be right? regards John p.s. maybe someone knows how I'd install gentoo's portage into mandrake 9.1 ? :D
  6. Ok bvc, the bit about adding the ftp source - I figure that I can do that. the second part, where you say "If it fails to get udev, module-init-tools, and hotplug pick'm yourself. Also as I said above initscripts is a good idea as well." is what I don't quite follow. you'll have to forgive me if my questions seem vague/stupid/both, I've not done any of this kernel stuff before. I also still don't understand the difference between "kernel, kernel-BOOT and kernel-sources"? many thanks regards John

    BITTORRENT

OK, so despite that fact that the #10beta2 experiment that I tried yesterday went to a sack of sh1t, and killed both the 9.1 and gentoo 1.4 that I had installed. I figured that after re-installing 9.1, getting the updates etc I'd look into 9.2 I should point out that I normally would buy a dvd powerpack, but what ever tosser who produced the current version of mandrakestore thinks that I'm gonna be stupid enough to buy it in euro's. Well, at the moment, they can stick it up their ars8 if I can't choose the currency. The point being that it's about £10 to £12 cheaper to buy it in $US. Anyway, I've got both the bittorrent and bittorrent gui packages installed. But it doesn't matter whether I look at Bittorrent FAQ's or at the mandrakeclub site, there's nothing on actually how to use it - how stupid is that. Mandrake seem to prefer this method as it seems to preserve bandwidth, but with no instructions, they obviously think that guess work will do! Sorry, ranting a bit there. The question actually is how do I use bittorrent? the mandrakeclub login/download page says I'm allowed to download the "club special". Perhaps someone could explain this process to me. many thanks. regards John
  8. Ok, I understand what kde-head is saying re trying the #10 beta 2 and nvidia drivers. I just won't bother with version 10 yet. That still leaves the question of exactly what I would need to put into the "Add that same link to your Software Media Manager under Configuration >> Packaging" bit of the original post. Or what I would actually have to put in the filename bit of "urpmi kernel-2.6.filename". does this mean that if for example, it's called kernel-2.6.bigdogswhatsits.rpm then I'd actually put kernel-2.6.bigdogswhatsits.rpm? or would I have to drop the .rpm part ?? Also, I notice at the linked site that there's kernel, kernel-BOOT and kernel-sources all marked up for 2.6.2 hence which would I need ? I think that the version that I'm using is a kernel-BOOT version, but I don't know how to check? any idea's ? regards John
  9. Hi thread, I've just spent 2 days, trying to work out how to do 2 things, thing 1 was to install a 2.6 series kernel, thing 2 was to install KDE 3.2 and failed dismally at both. Now I should point out that I thought that I'd managed to sort out the 2 "things" above, at one go, by downloading and installing mandrake 10 beta 2, but that's what seems to have killed of my earlier installs i.e. it wouldn't boot, then it wouldn't start the KDE, then it wouldn't see my graphic's card (probably because I haven't got the latest nvidia driver), then it just hung on a blue screen "a la microsoft". This meant that I'd managed to kill both my mandrake 9.1 install and my gentoo 1.4 install (which maybe still there, but as I haven't got a clue what the gentoo image is called, what the initrd is called or what I would include in my lilo.conf, let alone what I need to include in my /boot partition) I've just spent about 8 hours re-installing 9.1 and getting the various updates/bugfixes/security fixes etc etc. All in all, it's been a cross between and . So now that I'm back to something approaching "square 1", I have a look here and find this: Now while I'm quite happy to screw up my mandrake install, yet again, I'd rather not, so could I please presume on someone to elaborate on how I'd do this: Add that same link to your Software Media Manager under Configuration >> Packaging ? Also, as the "link" in the original post is this, which kernel "bit's and bob's" would I need, as I see there is a "kernel", a "kernel-BOOT" and "kernel-sources" ? For the second "thing" of getting the KDE 3.2, which I see is at the same site, is there anyway that you would know of to be able to get "the whole shooting match" in one go (and yes one of the earlier cock up's involved me trying to use "konstruct") or do I have to download the individual parts and then install (also would you know if that would give me 2 KDE versions or would it overwrite the one I've got from my dvd powerpack)? Sorry if I sound stupid (well, I suppose I must be), but I'd rather learn how to do this properly than have to go through the routine again. many thanks in advance. regards John
  10. http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/install.html is one that I found the other day. And seems to be quite good for explaining the mandrake install. regards John
  11. http://acidrip.thirtythreeandathird.net/ is supposed to be quite a neat piece of software as far as I understand. regards John

    speedtouch misery

Gowator, erm sorry it's taken me so long to reply, but yes, when I kept getting the problem of the "line 150 speedtouch.sh", for a while the only way I could cure it was to re-install the whole OS. This added to my annoyance at having to wait for the speedtouch to re-initialise between OS's so I got a modem router from http://www.solwise.co.uk/modems.htm called a SAR110 and a network card from pcworld. Even then, being totally new to network type stuff, I just couldn't follow what they were telling me to do. So I just rang Solwise, and someone in the technical dept talked me through the proceedure for both wind0w$ and mandrake linux. I was up and running in less than 10 minutes. they also run their own forum with was mega helpful for post install set up stuff. I can't enthuse enough about the modem/router, it's excellent. I've only had to reboot once in the time i've had it (got to be about 9 months now) and i can happily jump between OS's without a concern in the world. regards John

    speedtouch misery

If I remember correctly, then both lights should be on after you boot up, if the usb stuff is working correctly. The light sequence starts after you have applied the "modem_run" command. http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=2060 is the source of the info I used to get mine working (though since then I have changed to using a modem/router from solwise (SAR110), because it used to really annoy me having to wait for the speedtouch to disconnect then re-initialise when booting between OS's + every now and again, I would get a really strange about line 150 in the "speedtouch.sh" not working, and the only way I ever managed to cure that, was to re-install the software completely). I seem to recall that the stuff in the thread that I have linked, it was accuracy in editing the 4 files, it has to be "spot on" or it doesn't let you connect (or it will tell you that you are connected but you can't access anything) - dependant on your system, you might need to edit pap secrets and chap secrets (I did both) Hope this is of some help (though I would say ditch the speedtouch and get youself a modem router and network card - it should be recognised easily and the config is a million times more straightforward) regards John 8)
  14. My experience is the opposite, mail order version 9.0 (the 3 disc standard ed) took for ever to arrive, but everything was recognised, except the scanner. Since then, I now have the 9.1 powerpack dvd only, which again took for ever to arrive, when it did, bingo, everything installed/recognised INCLUDING the scanner. Happy as "larry"!!! regards John
  15. Yo Norm, If your installation is a "powerpack" boxed edition, then it should have installed the speedtouch usb modem OK. As far as I can sus the modem (I have the old blue "cow pat" version, but don't use it anymore) has it's own setup in the MCC. You may have to check that you didn't enable the "firewall" when installing. Presuming that the version that you got is 9.1 then I doubt whether the "update" cd will make any difference. The modem should just show as speedtouch usb, it's pppoa for the BT based product (or might be called pppoatm) and not isdn. You will also need to check the IP number. My service is BT based, but provided by pipex. I have a static IP, not a dynamic one. It may affect your settings??? Failing that, have a look at www.solwise.co.uk I now use one of their SAR110 modem routers - it means that I don't have to wait for the modem to re-initialise when changing between mandy and window$ and takes the connection out of the hands of the OS (but you will need a network card). I would try the window$ favourite, and go for a re-install. When you are following the setup routine, try looking at the monitor as a 800/600. I have had a few snags setting mine up (though it's not a hansol) and got it to work ok instead of using the default settings - though since I last meddled with it, it now seems to accept the default setup - the first time I have managed to get it as 1024X768. I also had to meddle with the refresh rate (I think that's what you call it) in Hz - that might work ??? regards John 8) I have just been looking at the software manager section of the mandrake control centre. If you look in the "software manager" part and try all packages>configuration>hardware at the bottom of the list is the speedtouch mgmt software. I am presuming that that should get your "speedtouch" up and running under mandy 9.1 though I seem to recall you could put it in place during installation when you select the speedtouch connection.
  16. which version of partition magic are you trying to use - because I was given to understand the version 7.0 downwards had difficulty/impossible "doing" drives of more than 80 gig's. But I have got PM8.0 and that should work fine, well it did ok when I installed a western digital 120gig drive. I just instaled window$, followed by PM8.0, the just followed the instructions i.e. how much space I wanted to re-format/partition off, what I wanted to format it as - ext2 is what I selected (don't know if that was correct but !!!) and then just clicked yes to everything else - didn't format any swap space - I got 768 megs of ram. That was when I re-installed mandy 9.0 since then I have been back into window$ and "nicked" another gig of windows space and formatted it as "linux swap" and then installed mandy 9.1 I am presuming that the 9.1 has set itself up to make use of the swap (if necessary) but haven't the faintest idea how to check - but it doesn't really seem to matter. regards john 8)
  17. Thanks anon and aru, I found the ones using aru's trick, but when I located it, I could only place a copy of "quanta.png" on my desktop, so having tried anon's trick for the "realplayer" icon, I figured that it should also work for quanta. And as I had had it open recently, I managed to do the drag and drop from the history at the top of the K menu and am now the owner of two new bouncing baby icons for realplayer and quanta. many thanks for the help regards John :D
  18. So with my newly installed mandy 9.1 I can still do the "link to application" function, but when it comes to selecting the relevant icon for the shortcut, it is nowhere to be found. I am refering to two of the default installed app's i.e. quanta and realplayer. It's confusing the hell out of me, as when I installed "opera" the opera icon was under "other icons". But there doesn't seem to be anything for the quanta and realplayer mentioned earlier. Any idea's please? regards John
  19. Just too finish this off, Two days ago, my 9.1 dvd powerpack arrived from mandrakesoft in Paris. So I install, make a cock up, re-install, make another cock up, re-install and "bob's your uncle". virtually everything that i want is installed first time (some of the games I like had to be added) but it's just up to customisation now. Even the scanner was detected and the correct versions of sane/xsane installed. All that hassle that I used to have to go through to install my M$ fonts (I prefer Tahoma) installed through the font installer via KDE. The only thing I couldn't fathom, was that I thought that the powerpack had Star Office instead of open office, but it seems that is only the "pro suite". Not that that's a problem. So the answer to my earlier scanner problem all along was just wait for the f****** disc to turn up and not to be so damned impatient! Thanks for all the assistance everyone! regards John
  20. Ok aRTee, I'll just leave it at that for the moment. It just means that I'l probably have to go through all this again, when my dvd powerpack of 9.1 finally turn up. I wonder if it will be worth configuring it as a GT7000 (if that's on the mandrake supported hardware list - I haven't checked yet!) directly since it's such a nuisance to do it as a 1260? regards John :D
  21. So the scanner now works from my user account as well, but it is still identified as a GT7000 and not a perfection 1260 photo :?: Why is this, could this be because i don't think that I have the most up to date sane, sane backend/frontend, xsane etc etc I have got the "thing" working with [root@localhost john]# rpm -qa | grep sane libsane1-1.0.8-5mdk sane-backends-1.0.8-5mdk sane-frontends-1.0.8-1mdk xsane-gimp-0.87-1mdk xsane-0.87-1mdk [root@localhost john]# :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: And if you think this might be the case, should I try to install the "latest" versions?? regards John
  22. I was just about to finish a mega post of the result of various commands that I got from the "linked thread", because I have been trying to sort this for the last 3 hours, what with uninstalling sane, xsane, etc etc etc and got to the bit that mentions jonathan buzzards site (and thinking, yes, yes, yes, I've already tried this) so I turn over the page think, OK, I'll try and add the bit's that "klemm" has found after he got his scanner working, and I manualy added "plustek" to my /etc/sane.d/dll.conf and then I have opened and manually added the 2 lines [usb]0x04b8 0x011d vendor and manufacturer ID-s device libusb :002:002 (I recall something about being the bus and something else numbers - anyway that's what I found originally with sane-find scanner) and after seeing that that was the last of the revelations/commands etc I clicked on the "scanner icon" and by magic sane opened up, the only weird thing now, is that the scanner is identified as an epson GT7000 and not a 1260 :?: Right, I'm off back to my user account to see what happens regards John
  23. Thanks anon, I don't know why I never picked up on this thread when I searched?. But I have now printed it off and am preparing to do battle with the scanner. If I get as far as "klemm" did, I will have to find out about his "chmod" question at the last post? in his thread - again that's the sort of stuff that I know nothing about. For aRTee, if my memory serves me correctly, the epson 1660, like anon and Relic2k's 1240U are both listed in "scannerdrake", so the minor "hiccough" that was experienced wasn't really too bad - the 1260 is as far as I have sussed, one that is built by whoever (though I suspect plustek) and sold under different badges in different parts of the world - though it could just be a chipset thing? as the "plustek" driver is used for at least 22 different models of scanner from at least 7 different "manufacturers. Hence not having any luck trying anon and relic2k's "pull the plug and wait trick". Many thanks for the help so far. regards John 8)
  24. Well, I had a look at mcc>hardware>scanners and it just gives me the dropdown for all the mandrake supported scanners. I noticed that both anon and Relic2k epson 1240 usb scanner is listed, so I can only suppose that they have experienced a minor "buglet". I tried uninstalling the sane related packages and re-installing, but nothing. I tried making sure that I had modified both the epson.conf and the plustek.conf, both in turn and together so they said device /dev/usb/scanner0 - and this gives me an icon with xsane /dev/usb/scanner0 below it. I doesn't matter whether I click the icon or do kdemenu>multimedia>graphics>xsane I still get the "licencing agreement" which I agree, followed by no xsane device found. If I do sane-find-scanner I get sane-find-scanner # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that # you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter. found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x011d) at libusb:002:002 # A USB device was detected. This program can't be sure if it's really # a scanner. If it is your scanner, it may or may not be supported by # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage. # Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports can't be # detected by this program. # You may want to run this program as root to find all devices. Once you # found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access permissions as # necessary. So I presume that something is seeing the scanner, as It's giving me the correct "vendor and product ID's". What next? any idea's much appreciated regards John
  25. Ok, thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try tomorrow and post back the results regards John p.s. I've just checked a link from Jonathan Buzzards usb scanners page tohttp://www.freecolormanagement.com/sane/index.html and it now seems that someone sane? can't decide whether my scanner is supported - though your one seems be supported via a proper epson driver - mine is supposed to be supported my the plustek driver. I'll report back tomorrow. thanks and goodnight zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
