  1. i have an hp ze4430us laptop, which i am trying to hook up to an external sony trinitron multiscan e400 monitor. when i plug the monitor into the laptop while linux is running, it works fine, however if it is plugged in at boot, it goes into powersave mode and wont display anythiing. it is only an annoyance because i often have restarted with the monitor plugged in, and i have to restart again with it not plugged in and then plug it in after booting to get it to work, this is not the case with windows, which displays on both monitors. there must be a way for me to keep the monitor plugged in and have linux use it as the display, instead of putting it into powersave mode. i have tried messing with the mdk control center options for monitor, and nothing seemed to make a difference. thanks for any suggestions you may have.
  2. its hda8, im gunna try to work this out. thanks for the replys
  3. ok i have changed the line in question to: /dev/hda8 /moltar vfat user 0 0 and it still doesnt work. if i su to root, and run nautilus /moltar, it works perfectly. can anyone tell me what is wrong with my fstab?
  4. heres my fstab. what do i do? /dev/hda5 / ext3 noatime 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hda7 /home ext3 noatime 1 2 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 none /mnt/removable supermount dev=/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,kudzu,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-1,ro 0 0 none /mnt/win_c2 supermount dev=/dev/sda1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda8 /moltar vfat defaults 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0
  5. Ok, hda3 is mounted as /moltar. it is fat32. when i try to go to /moltar, i get access denied. When i use the terminal as root, i am able to browse the folders. Mandrake put something on my desktop, called win_c2, and when i open it i see the folders in hda3, but they are not folders but unknown files which cannot be opened. All i want is to be able to access this partition, so that i can listen to my music. what do i do?
  6. I have installed Mandrake 10.0 ce, and lilo now works, but after selecting linux, i just get a black screen. in failsafe, and the other modes, it locks up on the line ACPI: IRQ9 sci: level trigger in installation, i selected enable acpi. I would like to now disable this so i can boot without reinstalling. Thanks for any help.
  7. too late, formatted. thanks anyways, im sure i will be back
  8. i will not be defeated. tonite i will format my sda, use it to backup all the valuables i havent already lost, and tomorow i will resize my NTFS and load up linux on there (please god). what should i partition my empty space as before i put linux on there, and how much space do i need for mdk10? also when configuring bootloader, what do i do to dual boot with winxp and linux on the same drive? thanks for all your help!
  9. chroot /mnt also dosent work, same problem as before i stil cant find lilo.conf, in /mnt/sda1/mnt/ i see no /ect/, only folders cd-rom and windows
  10. also another stupid question, wheres lilo.conf? i used find files, but nothing comes up, and it takes about .5 seconds to search.
  11. when i leave out the /bin/bash, it puts it in there for me, giving me the same error chroot: cannot change root directory to /bin/bash: Not a directory
  12. it says chroot: cannot change root directory to /bin/bash: Not a directory ??
  13. ok il try that, but i have no floppy drive (new laptop). can i do it with a cd? or some other way? also, sorry for my newbishness, but the path to the partiton i think is /mnt/sda1 but am a little confused, maby it is /dev/sda1?
  14. aight im in knoppix, and can see my mandrake partitions. what do i do?
  15. but i dont even have a choice to boot to linux, it goes straight to windows. wouldnet it be possible to just have lilo or grub on my hda, the boot drive, pointing to sda for my linux partitions? i can imagine there would be a way to be able to boot off usb, but my bios is very limited. there is an option for legacy usb support, which i have read does not effect linux at all. once i have a choice for linux, then i will move on to the next problem (possibly as you say, i might need to allow booting from usb by changing something. This would suprise me though, becuase mandrake allowed me to install to this drive, without telling me anything about not being able to boot from it. What can i do to install a bootloader if the mandrake rescue does not work?
  16. Well i still didnot read the manual, but i was able to solve the problem. I got this large floor fan out of the attic, proped up my laptop to allow airflow under it, and put the fan on full blast, aimed at my intake vent. Installation worked fine! Appaerently, when my proscessor hits a certain temp, the computer halts. Strangley enough, this is not true in windows, which it sometimes gets very hot in. I figured this out because propping up my laptop drastically increased the time i could work on a live cd before it halts. It worked for an hour last nite, then i decided to take it off the prop, and it halted in 5 minutes. So my plan is to use linux with the fan (once it boots), and learn how to recomplie my kernal to get APCI to work, allowing my proscessor to idle at .53ghz instead of 1.7ghz, hopefully keeping the heat down enough to prevent any future halting. Thanks for all your help!!
  17. Ok i will continue searching, but all the ones i have found so far are about lilo getting errors, not about its just not working at all. Well the problem mostly now is why the rescue console will not install a bootloader, as mentioned above. Hopefully i can sort it out, but i am kinda paranoid about these mbrs, becuse last week i lost my movie and music video collections , on a partiton on the drive i was installing mdk on. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
  18. i didnot do fixmbr because its warning scared me. but, i can boot into windows now, because i used the mandrake rescue console to restore windows boot whatever... so then i tried to reinstall Bootloader, but it doesnot work. it sais: Please wait, trying to find your local root device... Could not find your root device :-( Died at /usr/bin/install_bootloader line19 <press enter to return to rescue gui> what can i do to boot into linux now?
  19. I have sucessfully installed Mandrake 10.0 on an external usb hard drive, sda, and chose the graphical lilo setup, and selected my bood drive as hda(with windows xp). when i reboot, i see L 07 07 07 07 07 07 07 07, well abunch of 07s, so i am guessing lilo does not work. So i have no way to boot into either linux, on sda, or xp, on hda. I used my windows recovery console to fixboot, but this did nothing. My question is how i can reinstall just lilo, or grub for that matter, and have both windows xp and mandrake on the choices list. i am using another computer right now, and it is important that i can atleast get into XP. Thanks for any help!
  20. that would have been an interesting solution. it almost seemed like it formatted longer before it turned itsef off, but it was probably placebo effect, added to by this rediculous feature: when the battery is removed, a huge orange light flashes right on the front of the laptop. it was torture, so when it crashed again, it was like i finally died, with much releif. thanks for all your effort. what information do you need to know from the manual? i will email those bastards at hp if i have too. im downloading knoppix to see if it works, i read somewhere someone with my laptop uses it.
  21. that would have been cool, but i cant find anything about power management in my bios. one thing for battery, but it has no changeable values.
