  1. Unfortunately losing quality is not an option, these files are for radio playback. I guess the mp3s will stay mp3s and get lots of oggs as their next-door neighbour. Now, if only I could do variable bitrate with oggs...

  2. Well, we got the laptop and, as predicted, everything works great except the modem. I am relieved that it came with ATI's Radeon Mobility, this card works like a dream with MDK. The sound is up, the onboard lan works.

The other thing I would like to get working are the hot keys for the laptop.

I am busy writing to AOpen as they have a brilliant site with driver downloads, etc. but nothing for Linux!

I may be stating the obvious, but... have you searched for documentation here:

    http://www.linux-laptop.net/

That's where I looked when I bought my laptop.

Besides, there's usually a lot of information by searching Google with "<laptop name> linux". Eg:

    http://www.google.com/search?q=AOpen+1845+linux

linux-laptop has stuff for just about every laptop except this one! I am currently searching through my google search results. Will keep everyone... uh... posted?

  3. yes, I ran updatedb and when I run urpmi.update it says "the entry to update is missing" and doesn't list any of the sources I have added! Just my CDs and my local rpms directory.

It sometimes also bitches about the synthesis file for my downloaded rpms.

  4. I'm looking for software that will do a big batch conversion from .mp3 -> .ogg

I have 4 gigs of .mp3 files that I want to convert to .ogg using a seperate command for each one will take me the rest of my life!

  5. When I use those commands, it says it worked, but if I then go to Software Sources Manager, the sources I have just added are not listed?

I can't install updates until this is working, so an update on urpmi is impossible in a chkicked-and-egg like fashion.

  6. I cannot add update sources and it is driving me crazy!!!

If I add them via MDK control Panel -> Software Sources Manager, it just closes when I click on Add.

If I add them with the urpmi.addmedia command, it adds them, but cannot update or use them and if I add them straight to the urpmi.cfg file then I cannot add or update them.

I have even tried un-installing and re-installing urpmi. It adds my downloaded rpms without a problem, but I cannot get any security update sources!!!

  7. I think I'm on the right track, but since there are so many clever f**kers on this board, I thought I'd collect some opinions (this is your cue to show off).

I have one 10GB and one 40GB HDD. I want to optimise my partitions to a silly degree of effectiveness.

Obviously I would use the 10GB for all my system stuff and a swap partition. 40GB with a /media partition for all my oggs, pics & videos and a /home partition. I know, it sounds really simple - so lets complicate it. How would you partition these two drives and how large would you make the partitions?

  8. The thing is that these laptops were on an amazing special today, so I didn't have time to check the compatibility, we had like an hour to give an answer as to whether we were taking it or not.

I never use supermount at home but I thought it might be nice to get it working for a new user.

Ok, so only the modem will be a problem by the sounds of things? I'm sure there must be a way to get it working, but I will get the laptop first and post my results.

BTW: I also used to use Gnome's applet for mounting, works great, but I still prefer using the console (for everything I can).

I would still like to hear from someone who has used this model before, if anyone has out there...

  9. Ok, so I have just ordered an AOpen 1845 laptop for my brother. I told the sales guy to can Windoze as I have convinced my brother to switch to Linux... Which means I have to install it

So, in preperation: Has anybody used MDK with one of these laptops?

And: It has an ATI display card - will I have problems getting this going with rendering?

It comes with AC-97 Audio - Will I have to slave to get it going?

The cd-rom drive is hot-swappable, will there be supermount problems?

    Will the tv-out be ok?

It has a built in LAN adaptor and Modem, does MDK detect these?

I am sorry for all the questions, but I am trying to convert as many people as possible

  10. I agree.

The problem comes in with companies like id, they don't sell "Linux" Games, they just sell games. So if you want to run it under Linux, you download binaries. So how will they know who is running their games on Linux and who is using M$? They just know that X amount of people bought Quake3, they have no clue who of those people were 'nix users (unless you bought the loki version, which apparently didn't do too well).

Of course, with games like NWN and Doom3 - Bring it On!!!!

  11. My box is on a network with two windoze machines, I am trying to print through one of them.

I couldn't print until I disabled shorewall. Weird? I thought so. It shouldn't be blocking outgoing print requests?

I guess it's time to look at other firewall solutions....

  12. Nope, that only applies to no-ICQ contacts. When I used ICQ with windoze at the office it would keep my contacts on the server.

I know this because I've installed fresh on machines I've never used before and had my contacts. Also, if you use go.icq.com (the java icq client) your contacts are there..

It has been this way since the release of ICQ 2002a

  13. I tried both plugins and found them both to work identically, although in theory the straight ICQ plugin has been written specifically for the job and only the job and should therefore do it better.

Gaim is great, but I wish it would import my "buddy" list from the icq servers, like it does for MSN connections... I love chatting to people on 3 different systems at once though.

  14. Yes, your 2D card is interferring. Another user on this forum just finished a thread on this topic.

XFree kind of draws a lowest common denominator when you have two graphics adaptors and it is impossible at present to have direct rendering on only one of your adaptors.

If you yank out your S3, you will probably find XFree giving that option in the update.

Note: If you do ever upgrade your graphics adaptor, consider getting an NVidia display card. To my knowledge, they are the only company to supply Linux drivers themselves (you don't have to rely on third party drivers) and it is really quick and painless to get them going.

  15. Yeah, Direct Rendering = Hardware Rendering

I tried to re-install XFree with my old Voodoo, but it didn't give the option. Don't worry though, if you boot off the mdk cds and run update instead of install, you won't lose anything and it goes quickly.

I'm sure some of the more knowledgable people on this forum could find another way, but I found an update to be the quickest and least painful...

  16. You can skip the whole process, here are my experiences with my old Voodoo card:

For some reason with MDK 9.0, if your Voodoo card is not rendering from install, it is highly unlikely that you will get it up after that. This topic has been handled extensively at linuxvoodoo.org

After battling with my card for about a week, I discovered a simple way of getting it going, but it requires an udate/re-install.

You just have to pay attention in the installation, you MUST run install on "Expert" and when you get to the section where install configures X, you will have the optiong of XFree86 with Hardware Rendering, make sure you select this option (you will be presented with 3).

Now when you run glxinfo |less you should see Hardware Rendering: Yes

This worked for me and a lot of other Voodoo users, I just did an update of my MDK9. Nobody seems to be able to get it running after install.

If someone can, please post your method!
