  1. When I launch shortcut for Fire Fox 0.9 I get a choose user profile menu instead of the browser launching. I have only the default user profile. Apparently the application is running somewhere in the background. What is a way to avoid this problem so the application stops and will restart normally again later.
  2. I tried to edit the .xinitrc and get rid of the last line and enter the firefox browser there but to no avail. It won't work. I copied it into the home folder and added a "." infront of the file name. So, I guess I am not sure what my options are. I haven't had much time to work on this for a while and I need to get it done asap. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Bassically everything. I installed it and it is in my applications menu and when I start it I get a small box. What type of coding needs to be entered or where can I find the instructions on how to use it

So, who here has used Fluxbox? Where can I get good instructions for it. And does anyone have good stories related to it?? Thanx.
  5. How can I change user permissions through CLI. Because I am assuming it is the same as windows so to speak so I should be able to deny user permissions to Konquerer in each profile or user account. If there is a way to do it through the GUI that would be great too. I just haven't figured it out yet. Thanx.
  6. OK, Can I go into /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc and edit the last line: exec /etc/X11/Xsession $* to: exec home/student/firefox/firefox So ONLY the browser will come up? I figure I should get an opinion before I try it. Thanx.
  7. I guess I'm not sure. I am learning linux on the fly here so....
  8. OK, Thanks guys! I am able to manuever much better now... What I need to edit is /etc/rc.local so programs automatically start upon booting into an account. I want Firefox 0.8 to start and be displayed right away upon the boot up. I edited the last line int /etc/rc.local and added these lines at the end based upon the directions in the table of contents thread: su - ramfree17 -c /home/student/firefox tmpwatch -fa 120 /tmp And it's not quite doing what I want to... What am I doing wrong?
  9. Is there a way to configure the login screen so I can login as root? I have another user account and that is the only one that comes up upon boot up. I need to modify a couple of files and obviously I don't have permission under the other user's account. ALso, is Kedit a command I can use to modify files in Mandrake? Thank you. 10. yeah basically that is what I am looking for.
  11. Actually, I have firefox configured to reject the sites I don't want them to visit. I just need to know how to limit or restrict their access to the desktop. For instance I don't want them to be able to go into the task bar and use run command to go to a site I don't want them at. In fact I don't want them to access anything on the desktop. I just want the browser to boot by default...which I already have configured as well... and lock any access to anything on the desktop environment.
  12. Hello, what is the easiest way to restrict access to the KDE desktop environment? I have Mozilla firefox restricted from accessing certain sites and I need to restrict access to the KDE environment. I need an option better than having the taskbar hide, so people can't type url's into the run command box.
  13. when I try to /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy I get an permission denied error. I am in root.
  14. I am having trouble unpacking the content and and installing the itmodem-2.6-alk-2.tar build from my floppy so I can edit it according to the instructions from the general help portion of this forum. I am sure it is something stupid I am not doing in the command line but I am new to linux and not extremely familiar with all the commands. Could someone offer some help with this? I am using Mandrake 10 and have the tar file on my floppy and I am trying to get it upacked and install it on the hard drive so I can edit the drivers makefile according to those instructions. I have an IBM laptop with a crappy winmodem and it looks like this is the solution I just need to get the ball rolling. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  15. How compatible is Mandrake 10 with external USB modems? See the problem I have is both my desk top and laptop have crappy winmodems and it sucks trying to get a driver that works (which I still haven't done yet) so I want to get a good external one. I want it to be USB if possible as my laptop does not have a serial port.
  16. I'm wanting to create a dual boot system on my laptop as I am most impressed with Mandrake 10... The problem I am having is that when I did the install I set the boot loader to be placed on the first sector of the root partition. I did this because the last time I had a dual boot with Red Hat It was a pain in the a** to get it off the MBR... Well, now I want to put the boot loader on the MBR for Mandrake... How do I do this? Put in the disk and use the rescue command? What options do I want to choose? Thanks for your help. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  17. Hello, I have a question. I just installed Mandrake 10 to act as a kiosk at the college I attend. I installed firefox 0.8 to act as out browser for the web browser for student registration. It installed fine and what not... But now it seems to not want to launch. Any suggestions? Also, how can I create a quick launch icon on the desktop for it? BTW when I open the folder it is in and double click it.. I get a select user profile screen and it won't let me start it.. no matter what I try. I am a newbie and more familiar with (cough..) Windows so please bear with me. Thank you.
  18. I got the free version, it says not recognize /dev/modem.. I dowloaded the driver on my windows laptop and put it on floppy to install. I installed it using the GUI and tried to configure the modem and it says it is not supported by my system and tells me to check out linmodems.com. Maybe I installed it incorrectly?
  19. Still won't work! I installed the hsfmodem driver and it still isn't recognized. ANy suggestions?
  20. Thank you for all the info guys. I found the hsf driver for my kernal at linuxant. I have 2.6.3-4mdk So I hope it will work. If this doesn't work I am going to take the advice of others and get an external modem.
  21. Hello, I need to find out where I can get a conexant modem driver. I am running mandrake 10 on an emachines T2792. Thank you.
