  1. hats off, urpmi with the right sources can fix ANYTHING just got the mandrake alsa rmps and it works perfect looks like i fixed my own problem AGAIN
  2. im useing mandrake 10 with kernel 2.4.25 (i would b using 2.6 but then my isdn card woulnt work). i was useing kernel 2.6.3 before and my sound was working perfectly. but now that ive had to downgrade i get no sound, when i start kde i get an error message: Sound server informational message: Error while initializing the sound driver: device: default can't be opened for playback (No such file or directory) The sound server will continue, using the null output device. in order to try and fix the problem i re-installed the ALSA drivers as these are the ones that worked with 2.6.3. but when i run "chmod a+rw /dev/dsp /dev/mixer /dev/sequencer /dev/midi" it returns: chmod: cannot access `/dev/dsp': No such file or directory chmod: cannot access `/dev/mixer': No such file or directory chmod: cannot access `/dev/sequencer': No such file or directory chmod: cannot access `/dev/midi': No such file or directory at a guess these are the devices that cant be found. i could do with some help. id use kernel 2.6.3 but the interent is more important then sound i think
  3. i stand corrected....downgrading did work...oops...would still like some kernel 2.6 love though :( onto the next problem anyway...no sound :@...
  4. and for the record...i installed kernel 2.4.25 off the cd's and the rror message went, but isdn4linux still wont start because the HiSax module wont load. im beginnning to think its more of a confi problem or a problem with my hisax drivers..is it possible to get the to work on the 2.6.x kernel??
  5. i just installed mandrake 10 official. it was a fresh install but i was using 9.2 before. to connect to the internet i use a bt speedway isdn card (aka AVM!Fritz), this worked fine in 9.2. but now in 10 when i first click on the card in the isdn config wizard it tells me this is only works in kernels 2.4 and above (weird i thought mdk 10 was 2.6) but after the warning it carries on as usual. but once its set up it wont connect. i noticed booting up aswell that when it loads isdn4linux the hisax module wouldnt load, so i went digging through my hard drive and foun it in a kernel 2.4 folder, there was also a 2.6 folder but that only contains the capi drivers for my card. so heres the question, how can i either get HiSax to work, OR get the CAPI drivers to work. i would like to connect through the control control center as it makes the internet connection sharing work like a dream
  6. probly took about a week. ill try turning off the log services thing, they arent important are they??
  7. ok if i puy the /var directory on another partition will they just grow until its full and then stop. and it wont let me delete the massive logs so i cant move it as it stands because the current dir is about 4GB and the new partitions only 2.2GB
  8. i noticed a few days ago that my "/" partition was starting to get fuller and fuller quicker and quicker, after a day another 1GB's worth of stuff has appeared. so i went through my main dir's to figure out where all these huge files where and found them to be in /var/log/ so im guessing they are only log files...but why do they have to be so big?? and more importantly how can ni stop them getting so big?? im using mandrake 9.2 and the files in question are: /var/log/ syslog - 1.2GB messages - 1.2GB /var/log/kernel/ info - 401.3MB errors - 872.4MB
  9. wow persist works a treat cheers for that...
  10. well..by share i mean share the internet connection i have with my local network (1 mac) but ive tried loads of different scripts for KPPP to run and it isnt haveing any of it, so ill take a look at wvdial and this persist command, cheers
  11. well ive been usin mandrake for a whiel but one thing thats starting to annoy me as the fact that when i get disconnected (which invariably happens once every 4 hours) i dont get notified, whats more, most of my programs act as though they are still connected until i try to do something like click on a link. so i started to use KPPP to connect to the net as it automatically redials and tells me if it gets disconnected. but als no more, it seems i cannot get KPPP to share the internet connection as i need it to, so i have to go back to useing the regular mandrake connection thing, is there any way to get notification of when it disconnects, otherthan trying to do something for 10 mins before realising, and better still, any way of getting it to automatically redial so my download of mandrake 10 will carry on. im useing 9.2 btw [moved from Software by spinynorman]
