I have recently debated the same issue. I decided to try Superkaramba since I am also a KDE user and so far what I have seen is fantastic. I downloaded liquid_weather which is an awesome little app that seamlessly integrates into your desktop showing you the 5-day forecast for your area. I highly recommend it! :D

I've actually been able to do that. What I would really like to be able to do though is to make gkrellm transparent, so that you can actually see the wallpaper through gkrellm. Is this a skin that I need to download, or maybe it is only available in a newer version of gkrellm that I don't have?

I actually use gkrellm, but what I really want to do is make it transparent and dock it on the side so that it 'appears' to be part of the desktop, like here: http://www.kde-look.org/content/preview.ph...+Weather+%2B%2B Do you know how this is done?

I have always been a KDE user, not familiar with gnome at all. I heard about gDesklets and I am very interested. Does KDE have anything similar to this? I assume that gDesklets don't work in KDE.

I finally ordered DSL :D and I should be totally 'connected' by next Friday. This is my network card: ADM983 Linksys EtherFast 10/100 and from google searching and the fact that it is recognized it seems to be linux compatible. The modem from sbc is made by 2wire and since it is external, I am assuming that this is also compatible. On to my question. I searched freshmeat with the keyword 'firewall'' and I received over 300 hits. I am a DSL/firewall newbie and have some important questions. First of all, what is the best software firewall (I am too poor right now to buy a hardware one)? Which one do you guys use? Also, which ports do I need to make sure that are absolutely turned off? And if I leave a port open, what additional steps do I need to take to make that open port as secure as possible? Or does the software take care of that? Finally, does the software also monitor and track important occurances so that I could tell if someone was up to something? I am a bit paranoid because I have always used dial up before.

I can't get wine to work with DVDShrink (yet), so I have to do this in windows. When I use dvdshrink to back up a dvd to an iso file stored on my harddrive, it breaks it up into multiple files. DVD_VIDEO.I00 .. DVD_VIDEO.I04 DVD_VIDEO.md5 - I think that is the right extension How do I burn this using k3b? Normally I just have one iso that is the entire size (4.4 GB) instead of multiple 1GB size files.

I am trying to configure wine to be able to use dvdshrink, and I have encountered a problem. Here is how I have my dvd drive configured in my configuration file: [Drive G] "Path" = "/mnt/dvd" "Type" = "cdrom" "Label" = "DVD" "Filesystem" = "win95" "Device" = "/dev/dvd" Can anyone see any glaring mistakes? I'm sure that it is something simple, I just don't see it. [moved from Software by spinynorman]

OK. My KDE install is completely messed up(my fault), however my linux box is humming(by my standards) and I don't want to do a complete reinstall. To make things easier, rather than downloading the 50+ rpm kde packages, I would rather just reinstall from the original install discs. First, I need to add my install media to urpmi. Then, I need to reinstall the exact same kde rpms that are used in a typical install. Any help would be appreciated. I know that adding the install discs to urpmi is simple, I just forgot the exact command to do it. I'm not so sure about reinstalling kde from the discs though. :unsure:

I have dial-up, so if I do urpmi.update -a will that take forever? Also, is it only kdebase that I need to update or are there other kde packages that come standard on the install that I will need to update as well? I am somewhat of a urpmi newbie(started out with RedHat) so I kind of need my hand held through this. :D

I would like to do a complete update of kde(like it had been installed from the distro disks) using urpmi. However, I am not very familiar with urpmi other than doing the basics. Has anyone done this before?

I am using kde and I would like to make the tabs that are on the taskbar translucent. I have searched all over the 'look and feel' section on the control center, but I have not found how to do that, if it is possible. The only thing that I have found is to hide it unless the window is minimized.

You could also put a script in ~/.kde/Autostart/ that removes it from the desktop automatically when you log in(assuming you are using KDE). The name of the icon should be stored in ~/Desktop so you could go: #!/bin/bash rm -f ~/Desktop/name_of_hd_icon :D

I exited X, started kde...no sound. I killed artsd: ps ax | grep artsd and then started xmms and played a file, still no sound. I went to MCC, hardware, hardware, sound and changed the driver for my VIA KM133 chipset, still no sound. Could I have inadvertantly muted all sound? How can I check for that? Also, this all started when I filled up my root partition to maximum capacity, rebooted and received some sort of kde arts error message.

Is there a tool for linux that gives real time info about the processor, memory... like winbar does for windoze. I saw that bvc has one from a screenshot that was posted, and it looked great. :D

Still no sound . I tried both suggestions. First to disable it in KDE. Then to restart the alsa daemon. Neither worked. Any other ideas?

I was working with some very large video files and accidentally wrote one to my root partition, filled it up to 100% capacity and when I rebooted received an error that my partition was full(obviously), but kde also sent an error saying something about the sound server crashing. I didn't pay much attention to it at the time because I had bigger fish to fry, but now I get no sound. :unsure: My experience in the past has never dealt with sound issues, always been AOK. Now I don't even know where to start. Any ideas?

What I do mostly on my computer: -- Program using gcc -- Make home DVD's -- Surf the internet, email, blah blah -- Listen to music -- Try to tweak my graphics card, even though I am not a big gamer First two are major. Really looking for performance increase in transcoding home video's to dvd. :P
