  1.

I'm going to patent roads. My patent will be retroactive to the earliest recorded history of their use.

*starts thinking about how to spend his new found fortunes*

Sorry SteamCat, you wouldn't be able to get a patent for that since the knowledge of roads is already well known in the field. However, if you could come up with an innovative new form of road or something like that then maybe...

  2. The whole problem with patents is that you can get a patent for virtually anything. The only criteria is that someone else hasn't patented it already. Whether the patent is enforcible or not is not even considered in a patent application. There are many patents out there that would not hold up in court. Specifically the ones that deal with prior art. You can patent something that's been in use for many years but good luck trying to enforce that patent in court. However, it's the "going to court" bit that is prohibitive. Patents (if they are allowed) should be much more rigurously tested before being granted so that only those patents which have a hope of standing up in court are actually granted.

By the way, I am against software patents.

  3. You might want to try Embrola or even just use their voices for Festival.

There's not much in the way of free TTS software. However, if your willing to spend some money I think one of the following might be more to your liking:

    Babel Technologies - Bright Speech

AT&T - Natural Voices (the best I've heard so far)

    Scan Soft - Realspeak

For a listing of many different speech synthesizers try:

A good listing with quick examples of speech can be found at:

  4. Yes, it is also a good idea when you install memory to rock the module forward and backward gently (a few millimeters only) until it is seated properly. You know that it is seated when it stops making crackling noises when you wiggle it (fingers popping into position).

PS. If you look at the gold contacts on the memory module and see dirt you can clean it simply by taking a pencil eraser and gently rubbing the contacts.

  5. I'm a little preturbed by RedHat's abandonment of retail editions though. I switched to SuSE 8.2 instead of RedHat as a result of that. I wanted a pro edition distro I could pick up at a local store, and would be around in a couple of years. SuSE I feel has that staying power. I probably would have gone to RedHat but for that.

Well, up here in Canada you can't find any Linux retail edition anywhere anymore. Not Redhat, not Mandrake, not SuSE, nothing.

I guess they're waiting for the outcome of the SCO/IBM trial to determine if it's worthwhile to sell them (just my theory).

  6. I find it really cheap of Mandrake to sell a package with less in it than the free download. That's really amaturish. The idea is as stupid as that dumb commercial where the guy saves the company millions by putting one less olive in every jar. And if their excuse is that it was an oversight, then all I have to say is that upper management should at least take a passing interest in the company they are supposed to be running.

  7. Run the package installer (Should be under configuration -> packaging), select flat listing, and you should find all the gcc packages in the list. I think gcc 3.2 is the default in LM9.1 but I could be wrong.

  8. I would boot the mandrake CD in rescue mode and do a complete filesystem check from there. Better yet, get Knoppix, boot it, and fix it from there.

You'll probably want to check the man pages for the file check program related to the filesystem you're using. I had to fix the reiserfs filesystem on my server twice. I had to use advanced options to get it to rebuild directories and things. There is a lot more to fix on these journaling filesystems than the straight forward ext2 partitions.

    Good luck,

  9. There is a program called netconf that allows you to configure your network settings. (There are others too but this is one that comes to mind).

I'm not sure where it is under LM9.1 but under LM8.1 you can find it under Configuration -> Networking. If you do run it then click on the client tasks tab and select host name and IP network devices. Under this menu click the Adapter 1 tab (assuming you only have one network card) and select Dhcp. Then accept the settings. Reboot and see if it now connects to your router.

PS. Sorry but my LM9.1 installation is messed up at the moment so all I have to fall back on is LM8.1. Good luck!

  10. I totally fscked my LM9.1 installation now. Even aRTs wont run. I messed around with the /dev filesystem to try and manually add /dev/dsp, /dev/midi, /dev/sequencer, and /dev/mixer. Now it's a big mess and devfs insists on perpetuating it.

I think I have only two options. Remove ALSA from the kernel and compile it from scratch using the ./configure and ./snddevices scripts. This should set up all the required devices properly. Or buy a more modern PnP soundcard that will be recognized during installation.

I don't understand why Mandrake removed the snddevices configuration script. I've searched everywhere for it but it is not there.
