  1. What are the computers used for exactly? Cataloging and tracking library books or public PCs or what? I heard of a library in Australia that started producing open source library software (they actually hired a company to write the first version of the code and then released it as open source).

You might want to find out what the computers are used for and provide examples of programs that can be used under linux to accomplish those tasks.

  2. Don't expect any windows or DOS programs to run under linux (for the same reason they wont run on say a MacIntosh). There is a program called wine that may run some windows programs but don't count on it. Just so you know.

On the other hand, Linux comes with a lot of software that perform functions similar to windows programs. There are email programs, and internet browsers, word processors, and spreadsheets.

Whatever you do, if you need some functionality of windows, then make sure you keep a windows partition around somewhere to fall back on.

  3. Hi, This is my first post and I'm new to mandrake linux... I've been trying to learn how to use it for the past couple days now, but i'm not sure what to do about this problem.. every time i try to browse through my /mnt/ dir in root, the system will just stop working.. but only for about 30 seconds. even if i do this with quick browser it will do the same thing. the only time it will work, however, is when I try to access it with other programs.. then it will work fine. Any suggestions?

It's supermount. Anytime you go into the /mnt/ directory it will scan all the subdirectories and if you have a CDROM or DVD that mounts there and there is no disk in it then supermount will take a long time before it realizes there is no disk in the drive.

If this really bothers you then the only alternative I know is to disable supermount. But then you will have to manually mount CDROMs before you can read them. This is easier than it sounds but not as convenient as using supermount.

  4. what kind of front-ends for xmame are out there? i am using gnomame for now, but I am wondering how to get the non-vector games like Space Invaders to play "larger", ie. fullscreen or at least a larger window. the vector games like asteroids are perfect, but space invaders is just a screen about 512*512 maybe, in the middle of the black background.

er, if that made any sense...

    i think it's bedtime

Running it from a commandline is best.

    I use:

    xmame.x11 -scanlines -scale 2 -x11-mode 1 <gamerom>

That forces fullscreen DGA mode (if available on your system) and simulates scanlines on the screen. It looks just like the real arcade screen.

Oh, I have only managed to get DGA to work by su to root first.

  5. i dont think i will be buying UT2003 anytime soon... the demo won't even work on my fresh Mandrake 9.0 install.  It segfaults after the splash screen.  And my hardware shouldn't be a problem cause i built this machine about a year ago with everything top of the line.  Anyways, it has to do with libpthread.so.0 or something.  I've heard of others having this problem also, but no solutions to it.

libpthread is the multithreading library....hmmmm, I wonder how this game runs on SMP systems...

  6. ...an easy to understandable picture is a pyramid of glasses, where you put water in from the to...

The water always wents down to the next free glass. And if some glasses are emptied again, they will be filled up again, when something is put in from top again...

This is what causes fragmentation. If part of a file is in one glass and part in another glass. That means they are on non-contiguous parts of the harddrive (the definition of fragmentation).
