  1. Thanks for your input, Ixthusdan. Turns out I was unwittingly using the cooker version. When I went back to the stable version, it installed just fine. Trish P.S. I hope this is the right way of replying to you.
  2. I'm a newbie who was trying to install guarddog-2.3.1-1mdk.i586.rpm to run on my Mandrake 9.2 and got a "Unsatisfied libXinerama.so.1" diagnostic. I've read on the Web that libXinerama.so.1 is an Xfree library and should already be installed on my system. However, the "locate" command doesn't turn it up. Also rpmfind reported i386, athlon, and i686 rpms for that library & Mandrake 9.2. My CPU is the Mobile AMD Athlon XP-M 1400+ (on an ECS L7VMM3 motherboard). So the Athlon the is the correct rpm? Thanks a lot. Trish
  3. No. Coincident with that diagnostic, I lost my ability to connect.
  4. Many thanks to Ixthusdan, dacp06, & Arthur for the encouragement; and for pointing me in the direction of my firewall. That was the problem. However, I think I badly implemented Arthur's suggestion for interim firewall protection. I installed iptables_ipv6_1.2.8.2mdk (to Mandrake 9.2) preparatory to entering "ipables -A INPUT -i ppp0 -p tcp --syn -j DROP" - but now I never get far enough for the latter. My attempts to estabish a ppp connection fail with a "Couldn't find interface ppp0" diagnostic; and this was true after the install and is still, after I backed it out again. Does anyone have a suggestion of how I can get past "Couldn't find interface ppp0"? I figure, at worst, I'll just reinstall Mandrake. Thanks again. Trish
  5. Even though I get good Internet connects reported (by both kppp and wvdial), I can't ping anything (nor browse, etc.). I always get "destination host unreachable." Somewheree on the Net I read I should try "ifconfig eth0 down" which I did. But to no avail. What else can the problem be? Thanks a lot. Trish
  6. I'm a newbie trying to get Mandrake 9.2 to recognize my PCI modem. From the Internet I learned I needed to use "cat /proc/pci" to determine my modem port & IRQ and that I needed to use setserial to set up a serial port with those parameters. And then I learned that I needed to install setserial from CD. But now (running as root) setserial rejects "setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart 16550A port 0xe000 irq 5" as "dev/ttyS2: no such file or directory" (This is the same for ttyS1, ttyS2, ttyS3, ttyS4.) Also, when I do "ls /dev/ttyS*" all I get returned is "ttyS0". What's wrong? Once I get the above setserial command to work, all I have to do is append that command to /etc/rc.d/rc.local and I can run kppp and connect? Thanks a lot for any ideas you can offer. Trish
