I have a successful load of Mandriva LE 2005 using
three disks. But, after Gnome comes up it no longer
sees the CD/DVD drive. The Mandrake Control Center sees no
CD/DVD Burner. There is no CD-ROM icon on the desktop.
Loading of any kind of disk results in nothing.
Running SU in Terminal:
cdrecord -scanbus
results in:
scsibus1:
1,0,0 100) 'SONY ' 'DVD RW DW-D26A ' 'JYS1' Removable CD-ROM
cdrecord seems to be fine and running in su mode
floppy works fine and I can see, and copy files
off and on a floppy in the Gnome environment.
fstab looks like this:
# This file is edited by fstab-sync - see 'man fstab-sync' for details
/dev/sda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/sda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2
/dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,iocharset=iso8859-1,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0022,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/sda5 swap swap defaults 0 0
I do not see a /dev/cdroms directory
there is a mnt/cdrom directory, nothing in it
Did I miss something in the config set up?
Thanks for any hints

I personally would suggest downloading CD2 again, since it could be a problem with your ISO image, if you've burnt it twice, and at a slower speed too, since faster burns can cause issues like this as well.
Success. I burned CD1 at 4x instead of 8x and I've been able to load Madriva LE 2005 successfully, twice. Thanks :D

The 99999999999999999999999999999 mean that your MBR is corrupted.
The only practical way out is to CLEAR the MBR using any one of a couple of methods.
Only then will you be able to set up a problem free booting up.
It is most likely you corrupted the mbr when you did an incorrect or incomplete boot setup during your first attempt at the Mandriva install .
Cheers. JOHN.
My new system contains a removable Hard disk
tray. I can A <=> B <=> C hard drives to my
hearts content. The boot sequence is:
Floppy -> DVD/CD -> HD
I built a bootable Win98 (actually a nice floppy
based OS) with fdisk and killdisk
on it. With fdisk and killdisk I can literally
take the mounted HD to nothing but "0"s end to end.
Including tk0,sec0,,hd0 and that includes the
MBR sector. You only have to run killdisk for a
second or so to clear out the MBR. When I am
experimenting with a new OS, like Mandriva LE 2005,
I wipe the disk entirely clean before installing
the first CD/DVD installation disk.

Another question in this thread. Do you find that CD-R vs CD-RW or visa versa burn more successfully with the Linux Distros?. Thanks all

Thanks I'll give that one a try. (2x vs 4x)

Almost sure it's a bad CD burn.
That would be easy except I have tried two different CD drives,
2 CD-RW and 2 CD-R all with the same result. As mentioned
in other parts of this thread this is a common Install BUG with
Mandriva LE 2005 realeased last month. Interestingly enough
Mandriva MOVE runs just fine using the same platform, CD drives
and multiple CD-RW and CD-R media. It's not the drives
or the media.
I suspect the newness of this platform's SATA system is not
dialed into this Mandriva Release.

I have used two differnet CD drives, CD-RW and CD-R.
Also the same drives and combinations have been used with
Windows XP, Knoppix, Ubuntu, Ultimate CD, Puppy Linux
and several others. All successfully.
From the many threads concerning the same issue it appears
that there is an install BUG in Mandriva LE 2005 with many
platforms.
I am well down the path with Ubuntu 5.04. That Linux Distro installs
cleanly and on the first try using exactly the same hardware and
platform.

A furhter note
ISO burner system
A further note. I am using a completely seperate
and running Mandrake 9.2 with Sony CD-RW system
with cdrecord in command line mode to burn the
install discs from the ISO image.

I too have the same problem with Mandriva LE 2005
Installation gets to partitioning then:
An error has occured
fatal: nohdlist nor synthesis to read
for installation CD2 (cdrom2)
and stops. I have tried all kinds of solutions but
cannot go beyond the error. I have created a DOS
MBR that I allow to be over written, completly
erase all data on disk (diskkill to all "0"s)
and tried all the options. Let it use the entire
completely empty drive. Nothing seems to work.
Feel free to make suggestions. I use removable
hard drives so nothing is at risk.
OS's that install or run on the below same system
under the same circumstances are:
Windows XP Home SP2 Full install to HD
Knoppix 3.8.1 (Live CD)
Ubuntu 5.04 Full install to HD
Mandriva Move 2.0 (Live CD)
