  1. I have usually backed up the whole .evolution directory. Recently did that when I got a new machine. I back up to another computer via LAN. I've never had a problem with this. For what it's worth I also have my .evolution directory in /home as a link to another partition separate from /home (makes it easier to mess with distros).

  2. Thanks, Arctic!! The mem= did it, both mem=128 and mem=256. I now have a Fedora Core 5 system running. Now if I can only learn yum and the various repositories. My first task is to find ms tt fonts. I have a msfonts rpm that I've used with Mandriva. Will that work with Fedora? It's a noarch rpm and I'm on a x86_64 system now. Then there is the whole codecs thing. I've set up livna in yum and will have to find other repos.

  3. I've been trying to get FC5 to install (x86_64) to try it out, especially the 64 bit version on my new system (P4 630 processor, Intel 945 mobo, SAT II HD, NEC 3550 DVD burner). As noted in another post the checksums didn't match with the supposed sums, but the media check at install did. My installation hangs with the error "error transferring install image to hard drive." Thinks I may not have enough hd space (have 9GB for /). I checked around the Fedora forums and Google, but found nothing that helps. Tried selinux=0, allowcddma (suggestions found), but all to no avail. If any of you Fedora fans have an idea I'd appreciate it. I'll also try on the Fedora forums. Thanks in advance.

  4. Lucky you! My DVD checked out fine also, but installation hung. I got a message about an error installing install image to hd, thinks I may not have enough space on the hd! My / is 7.4GB! That should be plenty, or at least has been for other distros. I have / and /home (1GB). Maybe the installation is a hd hog. I've got the space so I make / bigger and see what happens.

  5. I decided to try fc5 and downloaded the x86_64 dvd iso and checked the md5sum: not correct. I downloaded again and checked. I got the same sum as before, but not the one listed on the Fedora site or in the SHA1SUM file. Am I missing something here? I downloaded from kernel.org. The files are dated 3/15 (both dvd iso and sums). I'm loathe to burn a bad dvd, but am intrigued that both downloads came up with the same sum. Any thoughts, suggestions would be welcomed.

  6. Do you have some sort of password protection on the drive? I ran into some problems with one recently because of that. Another screwy thing when I put mine in is that what is seen when I open the "devices" icon it shows only the system junk, not my files. If I browse to where I have mounted it all is as clear as day.

  7. My guess is you have the nasty xorg problem of 2006 when issued (since fixed in updates). As Ian said write down urpmi sources, particularly updates. When you boot into the console as root set up urpmi (urpmi.addmedia update... as noted in easy urpmi). Then all you have to do is urpmi --auto-select. Then try startx.

  8. I'm not clear what you mean by D drive, a Windows term. If by it you mean a Linux partition on your hd it is probably already formatted as a linux partition. You can simply install the new Mandriva there. You may want to break it into more than one partition, say / and /home. When you install your bootlloader just make sure to put it on the mbr.
