  2. tell u what, have 2 Heck, why not have another but mind how you go :D
  3. I hate clutter and so I decided in my wisdom to clear up the Konqueror toolbar. Now I want and need the return of the buttons that allow the contents of a directory to be viewed as folders or contents tree. I've looked at settings>configure toolbars but can't see the appropriate button. Maybe I can't see the woods because of the trees, but if anyone can point it out to me, there's a beer waiting at the bar
  4. Slooow down take a breath, don't stress. Download your iso's to your HDD and check your MD5sums Burn the iso to discs - I assume you'll be using nero or something similar Decide on if you are to dual boot or install mdk only (if you dual boot, defrag Windoze first) Install CD, boot up, follow the on screen instructions MDK will sort all your partitions and everything for you. Depending on your HW and what set up you choose, it shouldn't take long - I'm always done in 30 - 45 mins on a clean install. Tutorial time: this is all you'll need as a tutorial read through the installation section. If for whatever reason it all goes horrribly wrong either start again, or reinstall windoze. You can also download from here
  5. I found a nice little document which shows that you can turn off your 'putas - and not damage them, and also helps protect our environment at the same time. Darn link wouldn't work tho. (and standby switches are the work of ) :D
  6. Hey pixiestix Check out [ ] sorry, lost/broken link :D
  7. cheers jmanjeff I edited my last post as you were posting!
  8. :D and once again net_applet returns the icon - close the konsole and it disappears. I've got net_applet to set on start-up, but looks it appears I've also got an issue there now however, that's another post. :D Cheers once more.
  9. Don't know why, but this evening I've noticed that PC isn't booting into graphical interface. I get to a screen where i have to input username and pswd and then the command startx. When I logout I then get to a user command line, in which I have to [su] shutdown -r now (or shutdown -h now) How do I get back to a graphical boot up/shut down. In MCC Boot theme is set at graphical Bootlaoder is LILO with graphical menu Monitor is recognised screen res is set at 1024x768 Any ideas, any thoughts why this might have occured anyway - I've not been amending any settings. EDIT: MCC>AUTOLOGIN>launch the graphical environment when your system starts This is very first time I've been in here. Still no idea why I lost X in the first place.
  10. darn it I haven't touched it, and its disappeared again for no good reason. Anyone anyideas how I can get it back and make it stay put. This is silly and annoying.
  11. Depends on what you use your 'puta for. If you need a workstation, able to surf and download, email blah de blah - then I wouldn't think you have too many problems with a straight swap. But it may bode you well to dual boot, install and see how it all works out. There can be some irritations that revolve around hardware - so this will depend on your set up check the database at mandrakelinux. We had a couple of brick/doorstop PCs at home, running M$ 98 ME 2000 First to go was the 98/2000 dual boot - problem encountered - wouldn't load mdk9.2 until it had a BIOS flash upgrade. Problem easily resolved. Next problem was modem related - had the awful speedtouch 330 - synonomous with mandrake pain for many :P Easily resolved (got rid of it) but iitially I held out determined I'd win it, but it got the touchdowm before I did :D Invested in a ethernet modem/router - sails set to sail from now as M$ and ME was completely abandoned. For everyday stuff that I need it for - work/research/email its great. No more continuos system crashes and I don't have to worry almost daily about virus defence. At work I have a dual boot with XP - and the only reason I ever need to go into XP anymore is hardware related - can't get the damn printer to work with mdk. Manbe things will have improved with 10.1 ....uummmm These of course though are workstations not lappys.
  12. Cheers for this AussieJohn - it's something I could do, But, whilst bookmarks are important, they are not the be all and end all - annoying maybe if I lost em. I hop between FF and Konqueror and it would just be so much easier to import/export every now and then. Anyway, I worked out a partial solution - I can easily export bookmarks from Konqueror over to FF. So I guess if I bookmark in FF, then I can import them using Konqueror. Bookmark hell. :P
  13. Has this problem occured since day 1 - if so, then it just might be related to your graphics card and you might need drivers??? Mine's an ATI Mach64 Utah (or something similar) and worked great with 9.2 and works great with 10.1 - but it was just orrible with 10.0

    Starting FireFox 10

You see, this is where I start to get lost and confused. (i'm a noob, only been doing linux a few months). When I download firefox or thunderbird - I do a 'save as' and save the package to a directory (folder) either on the desktop or /home/chris When the download is complete, I then go to that directory and extract - that creates a new directory. I go in there and run the shell script (in the case of firefox, that's what its called, in the case of thunderbird, its called thunderbird - I don't touch the firefox-bin etc) - that opens up FF. From here-on, I can create a short-cut/link to the shell script. If I move the directory, I just need to remember to adjust my link pathways. In an earlier message within this thread, I did a step by step process from downloading, extracting, installing and creating a link. This works for me everytime :D I've looked at /usr/lib/ and see no mention of mozilla or firefox
  15. This is a really long shot. Have you opened up the box recently? If so, double check that everything fits snug, something might be loose, or not quite rightly installed. Check out your BIOS settings: look at power saving. It could be hardware related - I was running 9.2 without any problems, changed to 10 and had all sorts of monitor/graph card issues (ATI). Total loss of graphics functionality without any warning. Rebooting temporarily resolved the problem - it was I then upgraded to 10.1CE without any further issues. Sounds like you alteady done it, but go back into MCC and run the config tools in hardware (graphics card) and monitor settings. Double check fittings are OK and not loose.
  16. System>Config'>KDE>Display>Display Power Control Allows you to set standby/suspend/power off times
  17. Could it be in this little lot somewhere?
  18. I've got the new Firefox. I also use Konqueror. Using Firefox I want to import my Konqueror bookmarks. In FF I File>Import and click 'next' on the Import Wizard but then nothing happens. Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas on how I am able to resolve this? I'm using Mdk 10.1/KDE 3.2

Hey ho YaAqoB I presume then as you've downloaded the rpm's, you've extracted and installed the packages as outlined in message 7 of this thread? If not, how have you downloaded/extracted/installed. Right click on your shell scripts (firefox/thunderbird programmes) and check out permissions - look at advanced. As for Thunderbird, come back with the exact script you're getting. And detail the procedures you take to get there. Have you managed to create an email account at all yet? I had a problem earlier whereby I extracted and ran firefox from /home/username I then used this pathway to create a menu link. Later, I was tidying up /home/username and moved firefox into another directory, which of course changed the pathway and so wouldn't start up until I amended and created the new pathway - have you done anything like this? Though I doubt this would cause an issue running from the terminal. I'm only a noob myself, but have installed both FF and TB. Maybe some of the more experienced will recognise some of your issues, either way, hold on to yer hat, I'm sure we'll get you there.
  20. I should have mentioned that the Sams learn in 24hrs I bought is third edition (published in 2000) and comes with Mandrake disc (but its real old -7.1 :P )but the book is aimed at Mandrake rathe than RH etc and content of the book - commands, networks, file systems - the basics, so it will be Ok - try and buy it from a second hand/cheap bookshop (near where I live it is still being sold at full price in the major bookshops!!) not sure if a newer version has been published.
  21. I think they stopped doing MDK ages ago. I made an enquiry months back, almost certain they confirmed as not running it. Certainly didn't get a response saying when they run and how much it costs. Be interested to know if it is running?
