  1. I'm sorry for interrupting, but can someone summarize the steps for a proper system upgrade (with CD, DVD, whatever) so i will not have to reinstall?

Maybe a link to a suitable resource...

    well I was told

    1. update your actual version

    urpmi --auto-update

    2.install the packages

    urpmi --auto-select

    3. follow the instructions in your CD or DVD for installation...my thing was a little problem...but those are the steps

and Ian do you have any idea why does mandriva ask for it? I think it is a connection problem...but what can I do?

  2. I've been trying to do the upgrade but seems imposible but I found some messages while loading mandriva (runlevel 5)it says:

WARNING! Loop detected network -> resolvconf

does that mean some network issue? cuz I had everything configured before restarting the pc after the incomplete upgrade...

    any ideas?

  3. Likewise - it's installed now and running nicely, playing movies and haven't seen any funny video crashes (yet)...

I made my video works but the only problem is that I can't have smooth full screen maybe setting problems...but windowed works fine B)

    good job Greg nice tip

welll I think this is solved right? :D

  4. Hi demon,

It might be a problem with the specific mirror you are using (given that your internet connection works. I assume you write thses messages from the computer). in http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ there is an "Advaced" area in the bottom of the page, where you can choose the specific mirror to update from. I'm not sure it's going to help, but you may want to try it.

those links were! I just have command line available so I just can type those links....

    what I did was

    1. check the link...

    2. select my version (2009.1)

    3. arch (i586)

    4. refresh commands

    5. write it on a copybook (rechecking for mistakes)

    6. reboot

    7. failsafe then type su password

    8. write a command (plf first) output cannot locate 'http://plf...'

    9. tried the other one and the same happened....I checked the connection using ifconfig but nothing appears so I figured it could be connection problems...if so tell me how to config it please cuz I haven't done that...(yes I know I still being a noob :) ) I have never needed that so I went lazy

  5. You're welcome and thank you, neddie!

I have been using KDE 3.5.10 with 2009.0 since it was released on at least one system. I repackaged several rpms so I would not have to make symlinks to get them to work properly. That's how I know where the files 'should be'. :)

Here's a screenshot of my lappy's KDE 3.5.10 desktop: Show off your desktop - April 2009 – me

    :D

Greg you always have surprises like that...good job...I thought I will never make it work too...now I just need to fix my upgrade :wall: and then try your solution

you should write a solver hehe

  6. So, to be clear, for me the bug isn't the "urpme --auto-orphans" command but rather that the updater gives you a message telling you to run this command. It's then really easy to get caught by trusting the system and then do something that you would not even have think to do otherwise... I'm quite sure I will not be the only one on earth to have this problem.

From the first time I read that...I thought...it is an advice nothing else, the problem is if the packages were really updated or not? and for what you said you didn't log out/in after the update if they were important (something like X, kde, gnome,..) that is what I always do to make sure updates get applied (pardon my english  ) so could give an advice, let it get updated B) ...in the other hand you should check the list like everyone here is telling you...

I think mandriva gives you that advice because you should be root and that means that you know what are you doing...even if you don't...

    my advice be more careful

    learn the lesson

  7. Since I installed 2009.1, I can't seem to play any videos which previously played fine. Whether I play with mplayer or by double-clicking to launch "Movie player", either the application dies, or more likely X dies and brings me back to the login. This happens even for a simple avi from my camera.

I'm running KDE3 without 3d compiz effects. Any clues?

That used to happen to me when I was using 2008.0,2008.1, 2009.0....the way I solved was using VLC and installing the codecs, try also reconfiguring your video card drivers (I used to change some options on MCC)

Maybe you have tried that right?

  8. didn't you see the program list it displayed before you could hit Y/N???there should have been the KDE4 packages....

I've used urpmi --auto-orphans every time I do an Update and never happened before (2009.0, 2008.1, 2008.0, (learning and begining)2007.1)

if you lost your KDE4 packages just install them again

    urpmi task-kde4

this will install your KDE4 again, if you got X problem...well that would be a little more complicated :pc::ninja:

  9. thx 4 ur reply, I've tried to find easy urpmi with 2009.1 reposits (I've tried the link on this page but it doesn't have 2009.1 just cooker) I'm gonna try those using fail safe (like I said I can only have root access using fail safe)

    hopefully this make it up

    thx speed

didn't work  I don't know whether it is because I need to config ethernet (which I don't think so cuz I did while upgrading) or it is because repositories don't exist....I reckecked every part of the (plf, api )based on the link you gave cuz the output when I hit enter was "unable to find 'http://api.mandriva.com/...' and in the other hand "unable to find 'http://plf.zarb.org/...'".

any ideas what can I do? I'm seriously thinking reinstall it but I don't want to lose configuration and install everything all over again :wall:

    give me a hand

  10. I'd suggest adding the Mandriva distribution medias using http://easyurpm

Hopefully that'll get the missing packages.i.zarb.org/://http://easyurpm

    Hopefully that'...ges.i.zarb.org/

    Once that's done:

    urpmi.update -a

    followed by:

    urpmi --auto-select

Hopefully that'll get the missing packages.

  11. then I'll let you know if there's something after upgrading....thx yossarian B)

well here I am reposting ;)

My problem is that mandriva free DVD spring installation after upgrade says that 109 files couldn't be upgraded...

does anyone knows where to begin cuz I just have terminal login as root (failsafe boot) but I don't have GUI, no user login..

    give a tip, thx

  12. And open a huge can of security issues....

I absolutely wouldn't recommend a chmod 777 of your browser binaries!!

You might as well use Windows...

I did think that in the first time...

    " Posted May 1 2009, 02:43 PM

Use 3.5 beta4 instead. Faster, using less resources, very stable, and way more customizable.

It isn't in the repos yet, nor it will be until 2010.0, but it really kicks ass."

my question is why there going to leave it out of 2009.0 and 2009.1 repositories and put it on the 2010.0? they should know that firefox y almost releasing the 3.1 version

check out this links...they're in beta3 already

    here and here

if somebody can explain it to me because sounds weird ~_~

  13. Did not work, gentlemen. As there is no longer a "failsafe" option, I went the "F3" - "1" route and -- apparently successfully -- re-set the password. Yet I get the "insufficient rights" message, and the password is declared incorrect when typed in after SU.

Something strange and disturbing. The system said "Bad password. It is based on a dictionary word." The password I had typed in was preceded by two numerals and was a notably filthy word from an Indian language. Which dictionary does Mandriva mean?

did you try my option XD

cuz it really works doesn't matter if you use live cd or rescue DVD (I've done that).

  14. I would like the panel to show only the programs that are open on the particular virtual window that I'm using, but the problem is my wife! For a long, long, long time, even if you could see that thunderbird was open (you could see it on the panel), she would still push the icon to open it. Of course when the program wouldn't appear (because it was already open), she would call me, and say something like, "Have you been messing up the computer again!" (She knows me too well!!!!!!). So when she comes to check the e-mail (at least 100 times a day!), I need to make sure she sees that thunderbird is already open. Even at that, I usually have "Internet" on one desktop and my other programs on the other, to try and avoid her causing more damage than ME. If more than one program is open, but thunderbird is not "on top", she still has a tendency to close them all out (pushing the x in the top right corner) until she gets to it.

So yes, having more than one desktop has helped reduce the loss to data in other programs. I also make sure that I save everything when I get up from the computer, because as soon as I get up, she comes and checks the e-mail!

We "old" folks have a hard time with technological advances!

well try to do my trick...hehe give her a workspace/virtualdesktop while your programs are in another so she won't close your applications XD I use that trick because my mom wants to check her e-mail to so I give her a clean and ready desktop to her...of course you should made them independent from each other so an application would run twice XD

    give it a try XD

  15. if you're using live cd you must mount your root partition...in the /media file try to mount it there...then after you've got your root partition mounted (in this case if you mounted your root partition in that directory)

    try as root

    chroot passwd /media

then it should prompt for new password XD and your problem is gone..

but remember this is in case you don't have your root partition mounted or you don't know where it is mounted

you can also try to do that with your rescue DVD but I think it will mount automatically your partitions...you just need to find them (if they're not in /mnt....they should be at /media as /media/hd*)

where hd* is the number of your root partition...check them using ls command and looking the files

    good luck!

  16. If you are using compiz, try installing and using "emerald" instead of "gtk-window-decorator" under Window Decoration--> Command from within the CompizConfig Settings Manager.

yep that would be my first answer...(*)

another think you could try (I don't know if you have tried) is to replace the window decorator...then replace again 4 the gtk-win..-dec just to see if there still that problem...

I just that trick when tried 4 the first time compiz and didn't worked (I just did it one time)...let's see if (*) worked cuz it's nothing sure XD then I found emerald...and I read it would have helped me XD

  17. And if you share your pc with somebody like your girlfriend, wife, friend,...and you're working...they come with "let me check my e-mail to see if I got the message from..." or let me check the documents on the memory stick" and you don't want to close your session and open the guest one...or you just don't want to close your windows cuz u're checkin something interesting....you just give her/him a virtual desktop so they can work and you don't close your things :D ....believe me it has it's advantages

  18. Hello and welcome to another chapter in the ever-lasting series of Yossarian's Mandriva perfect upgrades, but not just so.

    Today's plot:

After upgrading from 2009.0 to 2009.1 (using the graphical online applet, worked very nicely and announced a successful upgrade at the end), and rebooting the computer, I got a black screen, instead of the login screen.

Reboot. This time, from the Grub I chose running in safe mode, ran drakx11 and chose graphical driver "Intel 810" instead of "Intel 810 or later" (I have IBM X30). Then I disabled Composite and 3-d effects. Desktop now runs normally. But when I bring those two features back from the MCC, after login I do get 3-d effects, but the windows have no decorators (or borders), ...

    Thanks!

Are you using compiz or metisse?
