  1. https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=46618

It has been reported many months ago, but apparently it's not fixed yet.

    Solution: use something else instead.

how did you find that bug? I did the search and that didn't come out...maybe I wasn't as precise as you are ;) ...and pindakoe thx but I found that it won't do anything productive for me (my way of thinking)...I saw this thread and I made the decision...thx scarecrow but as I say I won't use a new thing like that...

BTW do you have any Idea why hald is giving those "errors" messages on terminal?

  2. Hello Guys:

I'm having a little problem with draksnapshot-applet which keeps crashing and the hald daemon has some kind of problem, it isn't loading while at boot..

there's another problem, while draksnapshot is loaded the system hangs or gets into a big lag where nothing works except for the mouse (I just can move it but I can't do anything)

here's the output of the crash report

The "draksnapshot-applet" program has crashed with the following error:

org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.Hal was not provided by any .service files

    standalone::bug_handler() called from /usr/bin/draksnapshot-applet:168

To submit a bug report, click on the report button.

This will open a web browser window on Bugzilla where you'll find a form to fill in. The information displayed above will be transferred to that server

It would be very useful to attach to your report the output of the following command: 'lspcidrake -v'.

    here's the lspcidrake -v output

the hald is not letting the system mount automatically the DVDs and k3b isn't able to detect it (that's hald function and more), I can't install new packages as you can imagine...and when I load it like this

and everything gets back to normal but what about that "error" message that keeps showing on the terminal?

does anyone know how to solve this?, any ideas?

  3. this days I've been having the same problem with open office but it doesn't hangs on start it hangs while working, I searched all the /var/logs/messages, all the processes indicators and found my problem which is draksnapshot-applet I killed it and everything works fine without it... as Kieth said you should run in using the terminal and see where's the problem...I had to do that in order to find the problem...

  4. That's it. That could be three coin batteries or three capacitors to hold the CMOS data while you change the main battery.

yep those are batteries (seems connected in parallel) I don't think it could be capacitors cuz capacitors cannot hold on the energy without a source...they just need "ms" (milliseconds) to discharge...they are usually used to avoid damages when sources are removed (sources = batteries, current sources, voltage sources,...)maybe if you remove it...or try to leave it sometime it will discharge and reset the values/settings to default....also try the trick I said before (put the bigger ram in the inner slot)...

  5. There's already a package in cooker/main/testing, so there's a good 'possibility' we may see it in 2009.1.

Yep I've found it on testing releases but didn't installed, maybe I should download the source or wait the update icon to appear hehe ;)

  6. If you don't mind using the command line, try pdftk - see here.

You can merge pdfs into single ones, ignore certain pages and a boatload of other options.

About Foxit, thanks for the tip, I thought it was windows-only. Shame it's closed source though, I thought the open-source pdf tools could do everything these days...

thank you.. neddie and yossarian...I'll try the command line first :)

  7. if your laptop has 2 slots to put ram you should put the bigger ram into the inner slot...the other should be used by the smallest that way you can guarantee the voltage and amperage to that ram, I'm also assuming you have checked the frequency....the CMOS battery is a good idea to remove some corrupted files as daniewicz said above...nice one daniewicz, I forgot completely...

  8. acroread 9.1.1 should work, and okular too.

pdfedit is a useful, but buggy application- I wouldn't trust it for serious work.

    Some possible alternatives:

    - The podofo rendering library, which is used by scribus-qt4 (it's still in beta status). Podofo is currently packaged for several Linux distros, e.g. Ubuntu, Fedora. No idea about Mandriva, sorry.

    - Foxit Reader for Linux- it's native application, free, and very small ( http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/desklinux/ ). It works fine here, although fonts aliasing is an issue.

    - Some portable viewer/editor for windoze via wine.

nice application scarecrow it looks serious..

I have a question related to this...does anyone knows if one of the mentioned programs can merge or combine different pdfs files into one?

  9. I've generally seen this depending on the media I'm using. Cheap and crappy CD's or DVD's even if they state 4x, 6x, 8x or higher generally end up burning at lower speeds or if they are really crap (EMTEC) then they just fail to burn at all. I guess the DVD-R/RW is trying to detect from the media what speed it can do, seems some kind of issue and decides to find a lower speed to burn at. Unfortunately, you don't really have any control over this as far as I'm aware, other than attempting to force burning at a higher speed, but then you might get failed burns than compared to leaving it on auto.

;) yep that's what I thought..well Thank You Ian...also everyone trying to help

BTW how can I mark this as solved..?

  10. The fan does come on if the processor really has to do work but I'm wondering whether that fan cools the RAM chips anyway.

well the fan you're talking about doesn't refresh the ram...maybe in some new models or strange one, the fan you're talking about is to refresh the processor which is always warm or hot (mainly intel) you can check out the Bios as tux said but it is always precise and sometimes goes wrong for some reason (I've tested many laptops now ;) )

What I do to keep my notebook away from overheat, keeping it in a place with constant air flow, if there isn't then air conditioner or an external fan, laptops sometimes seems to be overheating but one reason could be that, also when you're using too much video (watching videos, playing games,...)but it always has a limit, when you reach max temperature or near your notebook should restart (has happened to me before,..) it is some kind of protection...maybe you could consider now in summer open some windows or using air conditioner, maybe the fan has some dirt as Aussie John said...

  11. You could install gpdf, or even the Adobe Reader which is free in Linux-version form. I tend to use this nowadays and it works just fine. I had problems sometimes with gpdf and others so now I just use Adobe Reader. I know it's not open-source, but it's still does the business.

well I've being using okular for quite some time and I think is very useful, it also opens djvu files...which I think acrobat and kpdf doesn't support...there's also another one available in Gnome...I think it is called Document Viewer..try those and let's see if they work for you

  12. after testing it with another user...using KDE4 and Gnome...it didn't crashed so I thought maybe it has something to do with all the files I got spread in my home folder...so I moved some to my /mnt/windows partition and then tested at my session...using Gnome then I did many simulations, burned some close it and try again an its working as you can see it didn't crash again  so it's good to know that it's working again...but the reason still unknown (as I say maybe it has to be something with the videos, seasons, books..that I've been downloading directly to my home folder instead to Download)(I use Downloads to store completed downloads)....I'm happy cuz I didn't have to remove k3b and it's been solved just moving some files (that's what I think) :D

Do you have any idea what could cause this?

thanks guys for trying to help...

  13. thx John ;)

I was thinking about removing the .k3b after k3b to do exactly as you're saying "If you delete the hidden K3B file in /home, then next time you activate K3B it will create a new one anyway" if I have a wrong setting it could be deleted right?...

  14. when I had the problem I did add my userlogin to cdrom group but didn't work...maybe because of the hal/dbus groups that you have mentioned...and maybe you're right if you say I had to be in those groups..I gave the advice that worked for me...maybe this groups were the solution I needed in that moment....

Let's see how it goes to him

  15. I had the same problem before I got here, what I did

I created a directory in my home and use it as a mount point my problem was similar and also got permission issues...

I got thet Idea after the konsole output were those....try it it worked for me...later it was mounting ok without any problem didn't knew what really was the issue but after that it mount it automatically..

  16. I haven't got any bad burn or failures...just GUI crashes ;)

I tried it on another session and it worked fine also in KDE4, that proves that you and Ian are right somehow but as I said, I've not changed the default theme...

if I uninstall it then delete the k3b folder (/home) then reinstall it...could work right? or you suggest that I roll back to all default settings?

thx for the replies..and in advance :)

  17. well I didn't know it could cause problems...but I'm not runnning any theme just the standard as you said (In Gnome cause in KDE4 it's different) :)

    thanks for the suggestion..

I got the bug report that k3b made is here the first one and this is the last I saw some different lines here's the other one

maybe it could help...I'm gonna try running it from another session to see if those are some user settings disturbing as Ian suggested (themes but it could be something more...)

  18. Hi...I've been using k3b since I came to linux so far it has being working until 2 days ago
