  1. You did not say what kind of computer you got, but If you have some newer equipment then 10.0 is better since the 2.6.x kernel will be more likely to handle the compatablility. 9.2 has more bugs worked out though, so if it does everything for you then you might want to start with that and then go to 10.0 final when it is released in a month or two. They are both free so load each of them and see what works better for you.

    Firewall

Why does the firewall seem to be disabled? How do i get it working?
  4. I got the same thing after the update. Took me over a week to finally get it updated cause it took that long to figure out how to get it to work with out the bad signatures. The updates changed the settings and did not start KDE automatically...all I had was command prompt blinking at me mocking with "so what are you going to do now you newbie" Logged in as user and remembered that startx was supposed to get me out of this jam. Tried startx but it just said something about command not recognized. Logged in as root and then the startx worked (after it cautioned me that it was not a good idea). I went to the boot settings and checked the box to log me in as user automatically. Now it works like it used to, but as a newb it was pretty scarry there for a bit.
  5. how do you update the signatures?
  6. I got my Radeon 9800 Pro to work, but it certainly was not an easy process for a newb like me. I followed the instructions from the 3D Rage forum, cause the ones at ATI did not work (it was not clear that there was a double -- before force). Then I went thru the configuration in the console which was a very long convoluted process and I was afraid I would get something wrong and blow up my monitor. It certainly was not a process I would want to do very often, and I still don't know if I did everything correctly
  7. Anyone know how to get Ventrilo working? Even if I can just listen that would be at least somewhat fine.
  8. Just installed 10.0 CE on my NForce2 Ultra and everything works. I was extremely pleased to finally have the Soundstorm chipset working flawlessly. The onboard NVIDIA eithernet works very well too. Both the northbridge and southbridge seem to work better then they ever did with Windows XP. I did not have to fool around with any sort of extra installation procedures as everything was auto detected
  9. BTW what does the Network Computer (client) option add to the install?
  10. Just installed 10.0 on my other computer with a NForce2 chipset and a ATI 9800 and everything works!. It is connected to the same cable modem and router so at least I know that they were not the problem. The onboard soundstorm chipset even works on all 4 speakers which is something even Windows XP sometimes even chokes on! There are a few differences in the install this time however. I chose the Network Computer client option and I installed CD4 this time. Anyone think that helped me, or was it just incompatable hardware?
  11. I am guessing this is not good: No such device blah..blah..blah insumod emu10k1 failed
  12. Pretty new to Linux, in fact this was my first attempt to install any Linux to the hard drive, but I did try a few LiveCD versions. I can get internet and sound on PC LinuxOS 2K4 without any problems, and of course with Windows XP. As I understand that distro is just a slightly reworked Mandrake 9.2 so I figured Mandrake 10.0 should work just as well or even better. I also tried Knoppix, but it seems to have the same problems connecting to the internet. Trying to connect to Comcast Cable thru my Linksys Firewall router but I can't figure out how to get the internet configuration tool set up to detect the internet. Tried a couple of different NIC cards and the onboard NIC too, but nothing seems to work in 10.0 CE. Tried both DHCP and static ip settings, entering a gateway or no gateway, but no internet at all. I even looked carefully at how PC Linux OS 2K4 was doing it and tried to manually enter the same DHCP, Netmask, and DNS numbers but nothing seems to work 10.0 CE also does not seem to like my Soundblaster Live card which is a very standard soundcard that ought to work. It keeps saying it is disabled as it boots up. I know Windows quite well, but I don't know enough about Linux to do anything except either hope and pray it figures it out by itself, or run thru the basic configuration tools that are provided. I was really hoping to start with something simple like Mandrake to start to ween myself off Windows ECS L7VTA motherboard 512 MB DDR PC2700 AMD XP 2100+ SB Live Value Linksys BEFSX41 router Motorola SB4220 cable modem
