  1. OK, I got it working, but its still a mystery to me. I had read online some articles about 10.1 issues, such as konqueror not working and such, and I had this problem as well. The articles recommended creating a new user account, and this would sometimes take care of the problem. So, I created a new user account, fired it up and now konqueror works, and kppp works on the first time!! I would have liked to solve the problem, but its good to be back online again. Now for my last 10.1 issue, I still can't shutdown my machine properly. When I go to shutdown, there is just an 'end session' option, no shutdown or restart options. If i chose end session, it just brings me to a login screen with no other options than to login. If I just hit the power button, mandrake always says I have shutdown improperly. Any Ideas?
  2. I finally got online, but now another issue has come up. Kppp says i'm connected but I can't connect to any sites via opera or connect to anything with the mandrake updates. Also, when i want to shutdown my machine, there is no 'shutdown' option, just end session. How do i set up a 'shutdown system'? Thanks again. I just installed 10.1 and I am having dial up issues. Previously I have used 9.2 + 10, and both were simple to get online with. I set up my new connection as before, but it refuses to connect. Here is what kpp's log file says: Jan 6 00:29:38 localhost pppd[5631]: pppd 2.4.2 started by jason, uid 501 Jan 6 00:29:38 localhost pppd[5631]: Using interface ppp0 Jan 6 00:29:38 localhost pppd[5631]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1 Jan 6 00:30:08 localhost pppd[5631]: Terminating on signal 15. Jan 6 00:30:14 localhost pppd[5631]: Connection terminated. Jan 6 00:30:14 localhost pppd[5631]: Exit. It will dial in fine then just sort of hang until this message shows up. Any advice or direction is much appreciated!! Jason
  3. ok, I deleted all those directories like you said and I still get crashes. I did this maybe 3 times with the same results. So I installed fluxbox next, and got 2 more crashes, and 1 lockup. Thanks for the help.

  5. Quick followup, I found the following info in the 'syslog' file. I know x is crashing but am unsure why. Does this help at all? Thanks again. 6. I have been having issues with kde crashing and restarting for awhile now so I recently reinstalled mandrake 10. I thought this would take care of my problems but it hasn't. After I start up, I get at least 1 crash per session, maybe more. The problem seems to be random as well. I can be listening to music in juk or amarok, or be online surfing in opera, or copying files, my screen will go black, then x and kde will restart. My setup is as follows: mandrake 10 2.6.3-7 4gb kernel 1024 mb ram geforce t1 4200 video card lastest nvidia drivers Since i'm at a beginners stage in linux, I'm getting to the point where I may try another distro. This is pretty frustrating, and i'm at a loss as to whats causing it. So, if anyone has any suggestions i'd really appreciate them! Thanks. Jason
  7. I recently finished the game, and would like to get others impressions as well. I thought the game overall was pretty good. It kept me on edge most of the time with its creepy sounds. It did get a little repetitive about 75% of the way through, but ended well. I also thought the gaurdian was by far the toughest to beat. I have to admit, I cheated and loaded up my BFG just to beat him. Even this took multiple times. This was my second game i've purchased to run on my linux setup and it perfromed great. It crashed maybe 3-5 times since I bought it. It also ran pretty well on my modest setup. Well, thats it, just wondered what everyone else thought of it. Athlon 2200 1024 mb RAM nvidia geforce Ti 4200 jason
  8. When it crashes, the screen goes black, the nvidia screen shows up and then kde starts up. I never have to login at any point. I will try your suggestions out and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the tips. Jason
  9. Well, its happened again. This time i was adding songs to my playlist in amarok and it went down. Also, I am using opera 7.51, and switched the fonts to the standard font that mandrake usaes on the desktop. Awhile ago i read somewhere that installing font from windows caused problems in kde, which I have installed. Has anyone else heard this? I guess I'll have to uninstall them, but I don't think any of them are being used. Oh, I am using the latest nvidia drivers. Thanks for the replies. jason
  10. I am having some problems with kde lately, and I think opera may be the cause? When online I use opera 7.54 as my browser/email. While browsing, at random points, kde will crash at my screen will blackout, and my xserver and kde will restart. Could opera cause kde to crash like this? I changed all the default fonts in opera to the helvetica-adobe font. Could it be something else that is causing this? Is there a log file that wouls show why this crashes? Tonight it went down 3 times, and its getting to be a real pain. Thanks for any advice. Jason
  11. I finally got it fixed. It was taglib that was causing the problem. Just installed the latest version of taglib and everything is up and running again. Jason I'll take that the problem is solved and mark the thread solved - Artificial Intelligence
  12. OK, I found an rpm and got it installed, version 1.1. Now I am having problems with it crashing whenever I try and choose a file to play. It happens everytime. Here is the sequence, in konsole, launch amarok, choose mp3 to play, crash. Here is what shows up in konsole: [jason@localhost jason]$ amarok [amaroK loader] connecting to /home/jason/.kde/socket-localhost/amarok.loader_socket [amaroK loader] amaroK not running. This has been a huge pain in the ass trying to get this program to work. I had v1 running for awhile, but 1.1 has been nothing but trouble. I am running mandrake 10, with kde 3.2. Thanks for any advice. Jason
  13. What is the terminal command you use to show all your system info? I've asked a few people with linux experience and none of them know. Thanks. Jason

  15. Thanks for the tips, I got it installed last night. I'd say it runs just as good or better than on Win2000. I can run it on higher settings on linux which is cool. I also noticed on gkellm that I am using 470mb of RAM while running Doom3 with kde 3.2. Is this typical for anyone else? Anyways, its cool that I can now run UT2004 and doom in linux. Now If I could just get my CAD programs for linux I'd be set. Maybe even dump windows ;-)! Jason Some tips to make it run smoother: http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Doom3/FPSVisuals.htm From a comment at LinuxGames.com: "Make a text file called autoexec.cfg in your Doom3 'Base' directory and add: image_useCache - set to 1 image_cacheMegs - 1/3 -14th system ram image_cacheMinK - minimum cache in K not Meg 2048 com_videoram - make sure this value is the ammount of video ram your card has it won't add FPS, but it will be noticeably smoother. the other commands on that site can help, but don't go overboard otherwise you'll lose some playing experience."

    Amarok 1.1

I am having problems installing amarok 1.1. I tried installing from source and keep getting gstreamer 0.8.4 errors. I also installed a RPM, but that isn't working either. So, is there an RPM of the latest gstreamer somewhere? I can't find it through google, and it seems to be holding me up. Or has anyone else got amarok 1.1 to install without it? Thanks for any help. Jason
  17. When I boot up, the full 1024 is recognized. I was having problems in windows 2000 for awhile as well, so i installed the new 512 in the 1st slot, the old 512 in the 2nd slot. I then ran a free memory tester(can't remember the name) and everything came up ok. Everything is running normal in win2000, and mandrake 10 as well, except for these minor issues. I'll try out your advice and see what happens. Thanks. Jason
  18. I have a few questions that hopefully you guys can help me out with. I am still learning about linux, but need help from time to time. 1. I installed the gimp print rpm but I don't see a print option in the gimp. Is this correct? Should there be a print option in gimp? 2. URPMI. when I use urpmi to update a program, it will sometimes try to install an older version of the program I am updating. I used the easy urpmi website to set it up. Is there a list of servers that contain the most up-to-date software somewhere? 3. I recently upgraded my ram from 512 to 1024. Now I am having 2 issues with this. Gkrellm only shows 884mb of total ram, not 1024. Is there a place I can check out how much ram is being recognized? 4. KDE 3.2 is crashing frequently for who knows what reason since I up'ed my RAM. It will go down, and my Xserver will restart as well. Is there a log file or someplace I can look to tell me why its crashing or what is causing it to crash? 5. Amarok. When I try to configure the visualisations, it will crash every time. I guess its no big deal, just curious why it might be doing this. Thansk for any replies! Jason
  19. Sorry, I don't have an answer for your question. I do have another question that is similar to yours, so I'm going to ask it here. In the movie XMEN 2, I thought the computer that mystique/lady deathstrike(is that her name?) used was cool as well. Could this look be replicated in KDE? If so how? (sorry to steal your thread!) Jason
  20. I'm only about an hour into it myself, and think its pretty decent. i think its pretty creepy as well! At this point I prefer UT2004 though, but that could change as I play more. As for a linux version, from what I've read there won't be one, just an installer you can download, like UT2004. I could be wrong on that too! Jason

    2 questions

I have two quick questions...... 1) in mandrake 10, is there a setting to make everything execute with a single click? I've looked everywhere and can't find it. I had mandrake 9.2 set up this way and prefer it to double clicking all the time. 2) back about 10 years ago i got my first job as a CAD drafter and we used microstation on unix machines. would this software run on todays linux? If so how hard would it be to get it running? does any unix software run on linux or is there more to it? Thanks for any info! Jason
  22. wow, thanks for the fast reply! that was it, and everything is running smoothly. Thanks again. Jason
  23. I just installed this driver on my mandrake 10 setup and I'm not seeing a control panel anywhere. Should this appear somewhere? Also, where can I look to see which version is being used? Thanks. Jason
  24. I found this image one day while looking for wallpapers and didn't bookmark it. Have any of you seen it before and know where it came from origionally? I'd like to know how it was created and with what program. I've searched deviantart and google and can't find it. Thanks for any info! jason
