Guys, thanks for the replys. I am going to get back on this tonight hopefully. There were
also two options it told me to try, fsck -a and fsck -p. What are these options and should
I use either of these? If so, would my command be 'fsck -* /dev/hda6'? Hopefully I can get this fixed without having to reinstall, thanks gain!

I have 2007 freshly installed, and it locked up on me while browsing online. I then held the power
button down until my machine shut down. After I started it up I get a message saying to check my
file system which it does, but then before it completes I get a 'FAILED' error, followed by 'run fsck
manually'? Now, I've had unclen shutdowns in the past but never where it couldn't be fixed. What
do I need to do to get my system back up and running again? I've never done anything like this in linux so it will be new to me. Thanks for any info!

ok, I reinstalled 2005 and it detected my ethernet card and connection without me having
to do anything. Its all working great now, I just wish I could have gotten it set up without
having to reinstall. Thanks for all the help.
-
edit: it was working, sort of. everytime I would restart my system, i would
have to create a new connection to the net. Is this right? Shouldn't it be on
all the time. Anyways, I think I hosed my system so i have to reinstall sunday
night. I'll be back then with more questions i'm sure.
Its working now, I guess. During the network setup I chose a 'cable' connection
and it wouldn't work. This time I chose an 'adsl' conection and it seems to be working now. Is there a reason it worked with asdl vs. cable?

ok, the service is set up, but i'm having problems in mandrake. I have a
D-LINK DGE-530T ethernet card, and mandrake recognises it. When I go
through the network setup stuff it says everything went fine. I then launch
opera, but get nothing. What could I have done wrong? It's working fine
in win2000, now I just need to get it going here. Thanks for any info!

nice! I have ordered the service and will check back next week when I get it.
Thanks again for the info.

sweet, thanks for the fast reply. Do you know what type of modems they typically use?
Jason

I am thinking of getting cable internet acces at home and was wondering if anyone
here has it as well. Are their cable modems compatible in mandrake? I called them
and tried getting manufacturer/model info on their modems but they had no idea
what they were. Also, if they are compatible, how hard is it to get setup? They
told me it should work, but they wouldn't support it. Thanks for any info.

Hi all, I recently installed doom3 on my mandriva 2005 setup and can't get it running.
When I start it up, the screen will go black like its starting, then flash back to my desktop.
Below is what I get in the terminal window. Any ideas what the problem is? I had this game
working perfectly on 10.0 and never had problems. Thanks for any info.
[jason@localhost doom3]$ sh doom3

Lowe, i've been using opera since version 6 or so, and its been great.
I use the ad supported version, which only shows very few generic adds.
As for the interface being cluttered, it can be customised any way you want
it. I recommend or install this browser for everyone I know who has browser/
spyware/misc issues. SPEED, email, newsgroups and alot more in a +3mb
download. I highly recommend it.

adamw, thanks for the suggestions, i will try them this weekend. I have another question for you all after reading the responses. I have been using linux/mandrake
since 9.2, and have learned a bunch of stuff using it. My question is, how do you guys get to know all of this stuff? Do you buy books, read online? I would like to
get to the point where I could just say, do this and this, then this. But its hard to
find something that says what each thing does, in terms a average guy can understand. I think i'm rambling, thanks agin for the responses.

I haven't disabled harddrake. I do use 2 different usb draives alot, will
this cause problems if i disable it? As for my graphics card, its a geforce 4
ti4200, with the latest drivers. thanks.

I have recently installed mandriva 2005 and overall its been the easiest mandrake
version for me to run. But I have 2 minor issues with it that maybe some of you could
help me clear up.
1) When booting up, its seems like it takes way longer than previous versions.
I would say it takes at least 2x as long to boot as 10.0, or longer. It seems to hang
the longest when starting portmapper. I have shutdown portmapper in the services
area, but still it takes forever.
2) When booting up up, KDE doesn't always start. Instead of going into KDE, I get
a login prompt. As far as I know, this is random. Any ideas whats going on here?
Thanks for any advice. Like I said these are minor issues, but I'd like to figure them
out.

Other than UT2004 crashing all the time, they are working for me. I couldn't
even use the 6629 drivers, kde/X would crash nonstop with those. So far so
good!

Since your problem has been solved, I thought i could ask this here. Does
anyone know when the next linux drivers will be released from nvidia?

I had the same problem and never got it working, even using the suggestions
provided to you. Between that and usb troubles in 10.1, I got so tired of it i
loaded 10 back up.

I will give your suggestions a try tonight. fwiw, I had doom3 up and runnig on
mandrake 10 without any problems. I didn't have alot of problems i'm having
in 10.1. thanks.

I am having issues with my sound card in 10.1. When i start kmix it is always muted, no matter
what state i leave it in during the last session. I have kmix launching at startup. When I boot up
and choose 'verbose mode', it says no sound card found. But when I get into kde/harddrake my sound card shows up there, and the sound works too. Why won't kmix retain its volume settings
on reboot? And why doesn't mandrake recognise my sound card on bootup? Also, when i start
doom3 there is no sound, but my mp3 players work fine so something is up. I searched around
and I am stumped. Thanks for any advice.

Well I got it fixed. It turns out that running fsck(with neither option) cleared up
the errors. Thanks for all the advise!
