  1. I've also tried all of the codec families in Mplayer's Preferences-Codecs/Demuxer tab and again some of them will play the audio, but none of them will play the video.
  2. Okay. I tried the x11 xv xover gl gl2 dxr3 vesa and xvidix video outputs and none worked. A few will still play the sound but that's it--no video. What else can I try? Thanks.
  3. Sure. Mplayer gives the following error when attempting to play these files: Fatal error! Error opening/initializing the selected video-out (-vo) device Totem does nothing, it just says "No File" and does nothing else until I close it. Kaffeine shows a black screen, the audio plays, and the length (time) of the clip(s) moves along on the slider, but no video. On the bottome of the video portion of Kaffeine, it shows the file name and: **(file) Windows Media Video 9 (0x0) MS Windows Media Audio 2 (ffmpeg) (34kb) Xine gives this: The stream use and unsupported codec: Video Codec: Windows Media Video 9 (WMV3) Start playback anyway? If I click Yes to star playback anyway, I hear the audio and the slider moves along, but no video is displayed. Does this help?
  4. Let me clarify: The codecs are in /usr/lib/win32 and were placed there when I installed the codecs package. I verified this, and still the problem remains. I still cannot view movies/clips encoded as/in Windows Media Video 9. Any further help will be greatly appreciate. Sorry for not making this clear in the second reply.
  5. 1. Yes, the codecs are in /usr/lib/win32 Thanks.
  6. I recently (finally) made the move to 10.1 and I am having the following issue: I can't get any of my installed media players (Kaffeine, Totem, Mplayer, Xine) to play the video portion of WMV9-encoded videos. I've tried installing the w32codecs, and still the issue remains. The audio plays fine, but no video on these particular files. Can anyone help me rectify this situation? Thanks.
  7. Double-checked it, and yes, Windows is on the firts partition of the secondary slave. In fact, there is only one partion on this drive.
  8. Okay, it simply would not work when connected as the slave drive (/dev/hdb)on the primary IDE channel, however when I switched it to the slave drive (/dev/hdd) on the secondary IDE, I got Mdk to notice it and mount it at /mnt/windows so that part is taken care of. The /etc/fstab modifications have been made, however when I run lilo -v I still get: LILO version 22.5.7.2, Copyright © 1992-1998 Werner Almesberger Development beyond version 21 Copyright © 1999-2003 John Coffman Released 20-Aug-2003, and compiled at 16:45:54 on Sep 18 2003 Reading boot sector from /dev/hda Using GRAPHIC secondary loader Calling map_insert_data Mapping message file /boot/message -> message-graphic Calling map_insert_file Boot image: /boot/vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk Mapping RAM disk /boot/initrd.img -> initrd-2.4.22-10mdk.img Added linux * Boot image: /boot/vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk Mapping RAM disk /boot/initrd.img -> initrd-2.4.22-10mdk.img Added linux-nonfb Boot image: /boot/vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk Mapping RAM disk /boot/initrd.img -> initrd-2.4.22-10mdk.img Added failsafe Boot other: /dev/hdd1, on hdd1, loader CHAIN Fatal: open hdd1: No such file or directory SO my LILO boot config is still incorrect. 9. I don't know--that's why I ask. The BIOS reads the drives correctly, so the problem is not the BIOS.
  10. Anyone? Or am I wrong in thinking that the folllowing line is a problem that needs to be rectified? Boot other: /dev/hdb, on hdb, loader CHAIN Fatal: open /dev/hdb: No such file or directory Any further help in resolving this would be appreciated.
  11. I followed your instructions. When I typed lilo -v on a command line, this was the result: LILO version 22.5.7.2, Copyright © 1992-1998 Werner Almesberger Development beyond version 21 Copyright © 1999-2003 John Coffman Released 20-Aug-2003, and compiled at 16:45:54 on Sep 18 2003 Reading boot sector from /dev/hda Using GRAPHIC secondary loader Calling map_insert_data Mapping message file /boot/message -> message-graphic Calling map_insert_file Boot image: /boot/vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk Mapping RAM disk /boot/initrd.img -> initrd-2.4.22-10mdk.img Added linux * Boot image: /boot/vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk Mapping RAM disk /boot/initrd.img -> initrd-2.4.22-10mdk.img Added linux-nonfb Boot image: /boot/vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk Mapping RAM disk /boot/initrd.img -> initrd-2.4.22-10mdk.img Added failsafe Boot other: /dev/hdb, on hdb, loader CHAIN Fatal: open /dev/hdb: No such file or directory So, where do I go from here? 12. I recently re-loaded one of my spare hard drives with Windows98SE. When I boot Mdk9.2, I can't get it to add this drive. The ls -l /dev/hd* command will list this drive (slave on the primary IDE) as "hdb" however I can't get it to mount or get HardDrake to list it either. Any help in walking me through this would be appreciated. BTW, the drive with w98SE works, because I can shut down, connect it as the master on the primary IDE and it will boot fine.
  13. Okay, I have some ping results. When it crashed this time, I typed ping 192.168.1.XXX to ping the other two PCs in this home network, and the same for the cable modem's IP address. the results were: for pc#2 : TTL of 128 and ping times in the 0.16-0.24 millisecond range for pc#3: TTL of 128 and ping times in the 0.2-0.3 millisecond range for cable modem: TTL of 150 and ping times in the 0.5-0.6 millisecond range Now, can anyone tell me what these test results mean? And where do I go from here in trying to troubleshoot this problem? Thanks.
  14. It lasted about 45 minutes running Edonkey2000 this time before dropping transfer rates to zero and forcing a modem+router reboot to re-establish internet connectivity. I don't know if it helps in any way, but the the techs with my ISP's tech support told me that my cable modem shows 16ms ping times, and doesn't drop any packets when they communicate with it.
  15. Yes on the hardware config: PCs connected to ports on the router, and router to modem. I don't know how to determine IP address for the cable modem from within MDK 9.2, so any help in that area would be helpful. I know how to determine my PC's IP (/sbin/ifconfig) and IPs of the other (W98/W98SE) PCs but have no idea how to determine the cable modem's IP. Also, I don't know the command to ping in MDK9.2 either, so any help in that area would be nice as well. If in fact the cable modem is overheating, what solutions aside from the obvious ones (fan blowing on modem, better ventilation around modem) can correct this? Thanks.
  16. I need help. I installed Edonkey/Overnet on my PC a day or so ago. The computers in the house (3 PCs) are all on a cable modem ISP package rated at 1500Up/200Down Kbps. All PCs are networked on a Linksys BEFSR411 router and a Linksys Cable modem that I can't remember the model number of. After finally figuring out how to port forward my router to allow Edonkey to work well both uploading and downloading, I had the following issue arise. Everytime I run Overnet/ED2K, I will get on a network and get 50-60K/sec downloads and 15-20K/s upload speeds for between 5 and 30 minutes before the speeds will drop to zero (0) both up and down. Any open browsers will no longer be able to load webpages at this point as well. The only thing I've found that cures this issue temporarily is to power-down the cable modem and router, then re-power them both. But, as soon as Overnet/Edonkey2000 is run again, it will happen again after no more than 30 minutes. I've looked around a little in my Mandrake 9.2 to find any network/network config troubleshooting tools, but have come up empty. Are there any tools that I can use to determine if the problem is with either my hardware or my software? I've emailed my ISP tech support and they are still claiming that the problem is on my end. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.
  17. Thanks, John. I followed those suggestions, and now konqueror will display the drive's contents without having to run K3B. I appreciate the help.

  20. I have two optical drives: the primary reader being a DVD drive, and a CD-R drive. When there is burned media inserted into both drives, the dvd drive's contents can be viewed with Konqueror at /mnt/cdrom however the CD-R drive will not list the CD's contents at /mnt/cdrom2 or mnt/cdwriter. However, once I run K3B and click on the CD-R drive in K3B, the contents are listed under K3B and can then be viewed with Konqueror at /mnt/cdwriter. My question is: how do I correct this so that the CD-R's contents will show up at /mnt/cdwriter without having to run K3B? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for reading. I am running Mandrake 9.2. Also, I had a prior issue that was resolved by users/readers of these forums regarding K3B and my optical drives: I don't know if it has any bearing on the current issue, but it can be viewed here: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=11845
  21. pmpatrick- When I re-ran the K3bsetup as root, K3b added that to the fstab. Thanks for the tip.
  22. chris z- Thanks. That did the trick. I appreciate the assistance.
  23. Okay, I followed the step by step instructions in the FAQ here: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=6665 K3B now sees my reader (DVD Drive) without displaying the error message about enabling SCSI emulation, however now my Writer (CD-R drive) is no longer seen by K3B.
