  1. I tried turning off DHCP thorugh my router, yet this did not correct the problems. I haven't yet tried one of the spare NICS I have laying around to see if that corrects the issues. The onboard ethernet is based on the Cicada 8201 chipset.

I just tried again to set the static IP for my PC--both through my Mandrake2005LE config and through the router, while leaving the other PCs networked through the router in their same configuration--and immediately after changing from DHCP to static IP, my PC slowed to a crawl upon rebooting, and I could not do anything internet related.

  2. I followed the instructions for assigning static IP addresses at the following link:

    https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=25212

Once I completed the steps, it worked for my purpose (using Azureus) but after a few hours (or a reboot) my PC would take forever to boot and eth0 would not function correctly (no internet browsing, etc) when the PC finally did complete the bootup process.

The only thing that corrected these issue was to reinstall Mandrake.

    The details:

I run Mandrake 2005 LE, I am home networked through a Linksys WRT54G router and my eth0 is the onboard ethernet from my Epox 8RDA3+PRO motherboard.

Can anybody help me diagnose what I am doing wrong and perhaps help me correct it?

    Thanks.

    -Scott

  3. I think this could be the problem but the only way to check would be to try it. If you try my line don't forget that the /dev/hd* must be changed to /hdc on your machine.

    Cheers.                                  John.

    John-

    Here's what I've found:

    using:

    /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom2 iso9660 user,iocharset=iso8859-15,noauto,ro,exec 0 0

the DVD mounts automatically upon reboot,

    while using:

    /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0

also works, but I have to mount the DVD manually.

    You're right--it is peculiar.

  4. Note it's slightly different. Might be worthwhile mirroring your DVD one to look like mine, and see if it helps, so yours would be:

    /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom2 iso9660 user,iocharset=iso8859-15,noauto,ro,exec 0 0

    ianw1974

    Thank you.

This worked. Now data and movie DVDs will mount.

In order to play movie DVDs I have to do

ln -s /dev/hdc /de/dvd but each time I reboot, I have to creat this link again to play DVD movies. How do I create this link permanently?

    Thanks.

  5. Before i call it a night, here's my /etc/fstab:

    /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1

    none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0

    /dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2

    /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0

    none /proc proc defaults 0 0

    /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

    /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0

the DVD burner is /dev/hdc or /mnt/cdrom2

Does anything look wrong in my /etc/fstab?

  6. Yep, I'm running the newer kernel. In fact, upon reboot, the older kernel version as well as the newer kernel version were listed as boot options in LILO, and I chose the newest version.

After booting up, I checked from a terminal to be sure, and it's running the 2.6.8.1.24 version.

There's probably something simple that I'm overlooking, or something I did that's causing this issue.

Thanks again for your help, ian.

  7. You're right, though, I should update/install 10.1 Official. In order to do that, though, I have to backup ~120Gig of data. My only means of backing up for the moment if to burn to DVD, and if I can't be certain that after the upgrade to 10.1 Offical that my DVDs can be mounted and that data restored...

  8. ian-

The drive IS recognized by MDK. I can eject the data DVD from a terminal (eject /mnt/cdrom2) and MCC/hardrake recognizes it. The CD burner mounts fine, the DVD burner is the only one that won't mount.

    Yes, Hardrake is running.

I'm running 10.1 Community simply because I haven't gotten around to upgrading to 10.1 Official.

Not sure which Kernel version I'm running. How do I check?

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

  9. ***SOLVED***

I just bought a Lite-On DVD burner. I've already successfully burned several data DVDs with it. The Windows based PCs will recognize these discs, however I cannot get them to mount on my PC. I'm running Mandrake 10.1 Community. I have one HD, a Cd Burner and this DVD burner in this PC.

    My /etc/fstab:

    /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1

    none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0

    /dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2

    /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0

    /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom2 auto unmask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0

    none /proc proc defaults 0 0

    /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

The error I get when trying to mount the DVD drive:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc, or too many mounted file systems

I've tried the suggestions in several similar problem posts here, but none of them have worked.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  10. My Mandrake HD died a few days ago. Today, my new 160 Gig HD arrived. Now, I put the drive in and rebooted from the 10.1 install CD only to have the installation say that it cannot find a suitable device to install Mandrake to.

Can anyone tell me what I have to do to this drive to install Mandrake on it? This drive will be soleley for Mandrake, no other operating systems will go on this drive, if that helps at all. Thanks.

  11. but it might be fried...that ..if that's the problem you might try the freezer trick...but that's all I can think of...

What is the freezer trick? Thanks.

EDIT: WHat happend to HD quality? All of my previous drives that died at least limped along so that I could save any critical data before the drive stopped working completely. This one, however, appears to have just frozen up Mandrake 10.1 right in the middle of a program with no warning.

For my new drive, I'm getting one with a 3-year warranty so that at least if it fails at the same point in its lifetime as my current failed drive, I can still have it replaced by the manufacturer under warranty.

  12. It appears that my HD just died. I've been running Mandrake 10.1, and had not backed up my files in to another drive or to another PC in my home network. I already tried to rescue this installation from the 10.1 dics, but it says that it cannot find my root device.

What I need to know is: Is there any way to recover Mandrake files from this drive once I install the new HD? Even though this drive will not boot, is there any piece of Mandrake software that will allow me to recover any files from this drive? Thanks for any help.

  13. Are they perhaps drm protected files (streams stored on your HD). Mplayer, nor any other linux videoplayer, doesn't play these.

How do I tell if they are drm protected files? These are .wmv files that were downloaded from the net.

From my understanding, these .wmv clips were converted from higher quality (DVD/HiDef) files to achieve reduction in file size and specifically for sharing of these files, so my guess would be that they are NOT drm protected files.

    Thanks.
