  1. I have just installed Mplayer/Gmplayer on my newly broken in Ubuntu system, and I keep getting this error when I try to play avi's.

ALSA lib control.c:654:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL /dev/mixer93%
alsa-control: mixer attach /dev/mixer error: No such file or directory

The avi plays and the sound plays, but this error box just sits there and rapidly flashes.

I know this isn't a Ubuntu board, but I was hoping that since this is a problem with ALSA and gmplayer, someone might be able to help me find a solution.

  2. Well, I'm posting from my new Ubuntu machine.

Got so ansy, I decided to go Ubuntu first. I'm really liking it. Everything works right off. My USB HD is running at full speed (I had to manualy insert it into fstab before, to get it to run at full speed) and it looks nice. BTY I'm GNOME user, so thanks for the reccomendation Gowator and BVC.

I'll give this one a shot for a few wks.

Now I just have to figure out how to install the apps I need. Is there a Debian equivalent to URPMI? What kind of packages do I use? And other Ubuntu Noobish questions like that.

I'm reading thru the other Ubuntu posts, but If any of you can direct me to one that is especially helpfull, I'd appreciate it. Also, a good Ubuntu board would help.

I have MDK on my office computers and will probably stick with it when the 10.1 OE ISOs are available, but I'm gona use my home computer as the learning ground.

  3. I have become very comfortable with MDK over the last 11 months, and feal I should start experimenting with a more technical distro.

I have downloaded ISOs for SUSE 9.1 personal and UBUNTU. These are 2 that I've been wanting to try, but I would appreciate some reccomendations. Keep in mind that My whole experience outside of Windows has been only 11 months. I want to try a Linux flavor that will help me to improve and develop but not be too technical that I'm going to get frustrated.

Are my 2 choices going to fill that description or is there another version that I should try.

Right now I'm backing up all of my docs/media to a USB HD, and will probably try for an install tomorrow.

  4. i suggest after you get libdvdcss, that you get the dvd player xine... it is quite possibly the best dvd player ever created...

    Wow. No hessitation there :D

Yeah, libdvdcss is a must. I personaly use Mplayer and Xine. Sometimes I'll run into one that won't play on one or the other, and it's nice to have a backup.

  5. Never mind. Computer is fixed now. I spent about 30 minutes plugging and unplugging and shuffling things around before I realized that I had checked the connections to the drives, but not the connection to the board. The IDE cable had come loose from the board. Not sure how, but all I had to do was make sure it was snug and everything was fixed. Thanks for the advise all.

  6. Ok. It's apparently a bigger problem than I thought. I decided to boot to MDK 10.0 OE disk 1, to see if it would pick up my drives. Turns out, It wouldn't even boot to disk. So I checked BIOS to look at boot order. BIOS doesn't even show the two drives..

I'm going to take sys apart tonight and fiddle (change master/slave settings, flip around IDE cables, etc), but If anyone else has experienced something like this before, I'd appreciate any advice that you can provide.

  7. Thought I'd post a copy of what my fstab looks like now.

    /dev/hda1 / ext3 noatime 1 1
    none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
    /dev/hda6 /home ext3 noatime 1 2
    none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync 0 0
    /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbhd vfat umask=0,rw,user,exec 0 0
    none /mnt/zip supermount dev=/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part4,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,kudzu,codepage=850 0 0
    none /proc proc defaults 0 0
    /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

  8. Help!

I have been working on THIS problem, and just switched out my NIC. When I did, my CDRW and my DVDROM went away. No entry in fstab. Switched the card back to old one but that was no help.

I kinda need both of those drives. The fact that Supermount is not picking them up is not necessarily a bad thing ( I had to enter my USB HD manualy into fstab), but I am not really familiar with what the CDRW and DVDROM entries should look like.

Can anyone help me? Either thru Supermount or manual fstab entry, I need to get these drives up and running again.

Any advise or instruction, completely welcomed.

  9. unfortunately they are currently not taking applications at this time due to an issue with their non-profit status.

Man I want one too! :cheesy: I could get rid of my gaudy credit union one.

I applied last month and sent in all the acct verification info. Last email I got said my card should be here this wk. Nothing was sent to me about the non-profit issue. Hope I still get my card.

  10. No collision errors. Cables have been replaced. I'll rip a nic out of one of my other computers and test.

Upload and download speeds are fine (at the same time) for whatever app I'm running (limewire, bittorent, overnet, FTP, etc.). However, if I try to use any other internet accessing program, I get the slowdown on the new app, but the original app continues working without problems.

  11. Over the last year, I have posted on this topic twice, but no one seems able to help. The only suggestion is that maybe the problem is ISP side.

Well here I am again - I have changed ISPs with no luck.

Here's my problem. Any time I have any amount of BW being taken by uploads (eg. Bittorrent file with 10k down and 2k up), all internet related apps (web browsing, email, etc.) slow way down (like 14.4k slow). Doesn't matter how large or small my upload speed is.

I have moved from a DSL connection (fairly speedy) to a cable connection (2M download / 500K upload) - New ISP, new type of connection, new modem, new speed - same problem.

Anyone have a clue as to what this might be? Or even how I can trouble shoot it?

    Any help would be appreciated.

  12. Had the same thing happen to a computer I set up to use as a sound station for my church's sound room (and payasam is right, It is nauseating, and possibly seizure inducing :D ). I had minimal memory in that computer. When I added mem, problem stopped. Not sure if memory was the problem, but whatever needed it might have been.

    What are the computer specs?

  13. Have you had a chance to check that firewall yet? I would tend to agree with devries on this one. I had a similar problem about 6 months ago. I believe it was triggered when I messes with the "share a connection" option, but I'm not positive.

Anyway, My firewall settings seemed fine, but just for kicks, I turned it off, took eth0 down and then back up again, then reset the firewall. Everything ran fine afther that.

    Might be worth a try.

    *Edited to insert Windows joke

(For those recent Windows converts, you can just reset your computer instead of taking eth0 down and up - if it makes you feel any better :D )

  14. Strike that last comment about messenger file transfer - it's stuck at 10kbps upload speed also. I'm starting to think that my ISP tech. was full of crap. Not sure why I would be capped at 10 kbps up, but that seems to be the direction everything pointing.

If anyone has had a simmilar experience with their FTP server or with their ISP, I would appreciate hearing about it.

  15. I'm not really knowledgeable as far as protocolls go. I'm doing a packet capture right now, but am unfamiliar with what I need to be looking for, so Ethereal probably isn't going to help me much. I noticed that uploade speed is pretty good when using file transfer thru AMSN. I assume that's using FTP protocoll, so I wonder what it could be

  16. I'm running proftpd

    [kevin@kevins kevin]$ rpm -qa | grep ftp
    gftp-2.0.16-4mdk
    lftp-2.6.11-2mdk
    gproftpd-8.1.5-3mdk
    proftpd-1.2.9-3.1.100mdk
    ftp-client-krb5-1.3-6.2.100mdk

Everything is running fine, except for my download/upload speed. I'm running Mdk 10.0 OE using a DSL connection with a DL speed of +500 kbps and a UL speed of +160 kbps. I can upload to the server at full speed (dl speed) but downloading from server is capped at like 10 kbps (ul speed).

I have verified from ISP that there is no UL cap on their end, and have completely killed firewall for test, with no change. Googled for similar prob, but nothing solid found. I'm running from GUI so I don't know if there are other settings that I'm not seeing.

    Any help would be appreciated.
