Hi:
Well what is CD ? Carrier Delay? StupidMode =1 is what is set in my wvdial Is it same as StupidMode =Yes. I also have a delay or sort set to 300sec. This is what I get on my Zoom PCI modem on the other computer.

May be it is the Modem?

I tried Terminal based, it logs me in, assigns an IP address, a MTU 1528 and brings up logging on to network and times out pppd. I guess I have just increase the pppd timeout like 3 minutes or so.Let me see if I can do that and reply.

It does nothing more than that it says CONNECT 56000 and nothing much,Mozilla does not bring up any webpage. Usually, what happens is the Loggin on to Network comes up and the dialog minimizes to the taskbar. I have a Conextant chip on this External modem. I guess the port is set at boot up, as oxo3f [iRQ 4] ttyS1 0x02f[iRQ 3] ttyS0 i set at boot up for 16605A UART that is modem, I cannot find any other particluars about this device Diamond through Hard Drake. The funny thing is on my other computer I have a Zoom Conextant Chip based PCI HSF modem which works with teh Linuxant driver at 14.4 KBS. And not this external modem. I tried script based. with an example script from KPPP handbook, the problme is it comes up to Login: login AlanJ@uunet.net and then waits for my Password & nothing much.

Will some one good workable script for Modem connection So I can try instead of PAP/CHAP? or an alternative to kppp, but I doubt it is becoz of kppp. May be Modem & not ISP.

No Change. I guess it may be something to do with the Modem Diamond External Serial SupraExpress 56e Pro modem. Let me contact manufacturer and lets what happens.

I have the exact same problem. I have an External Serial Modem and a internal WinModem connected in the same machine. Whenever I run Kppp from the terminal I am also getting 'Terminating on Signal 15' and from the terminal 'Interface PPP0 not found'. I was going to try to remove the internal modem but then my harddisk crashed.
Really, I willl remove that less useful USR 5610 WinModem, and let you know what happens.

I did try out the script adapted it to Diamond Supra 56e modem, Infact I have aUSR 5610 56k WinMODEM also on the computer whose IRQ is 5 and device ID is 12b9:1006.
But, I cannot find Diamond Supra 56e SERIAL modem via lspci also in Harddrake this is not listed, but modem query does list the modem data, and it dials out. Should I be looking for info on Serial interface.
I tried wvdial same case there also, the dialing stops after a while. I have to do CTRL-C to cut it out of the konsole. And I get this message encountered SIGNAL 2 attempting to exit gracefully.
I am wondering how a Serial modem would be listed in lspci.? I am sure I will crack this one as well, This is how its been with me with tough things in the end they have always worked, Thanks for your help

This is all the information that there is even with debug on, Googling I found that lot of people have come across this problem with this particular Modem, It seems to work fine on WinXP has seven 8 LEDS, only LEDs that dont light up on Linux are SD & RD if this helps, I will try reading man pppd and see what I can do about this. I was trying to even use ndiswrapper just incase I can use WinXP drivers, I get a message stsating driver installed hardware installed, but never get to using those drivers even after doing ndiswrapper -m or modrprobe ndiswrapper. I really did not know that Modems would be a great hinderence in using Linux productively. The damn WinXP wont let me see Linux Partition unlike Linux seeing WinXP's. I am confident that I will get this modem working with Linux just have to keep working on this.

Hi:
The mixer is not there. In the system tray the Speaker Icon is crossed. When asked for details the message is that /dev/mixer does not exist, YOu Kernel might not have sound support. I tried as root, there are no files called /dev/dsp & /dev/mixer.
In the intial boot up, I get ALSA initiated, setting up Mixer.
/root/tmp/asound_tmp file/folder does not exist.
I installed Mandrake on another computer, it does not have this problem, although Mandrake 10 community the CD player does nothing much more than ask me to buy that software. I had to install xmms from the DVD to get CD audio working. Knoppix Live CD plays the CD from my DVD writer. I guess problem must have started as I had this main board VIA audio and Digigram PLX82 Sound card. I removed Digigram PLX sound card, and only using on baord audio. Do you recommend that I install it all over again?

I am unable to play any Music Cd as my VIA882A sound crad is not recognized. When the initial desktop appears upon boot up I get a message stating /dev/dsp could not be created using null configuration, As a result none of teh CD players play any CD. Also. /dev is write protected for me to create a file called dsp. When I do troubleshooting with from HardDrake I get that a message from one of the tests that Sound Card is not being used. How can I fix it. the default sound card driver snd_VIA882

Hi:
I cannot play CD audio. KsCD starts up starts playing CD but no sound comes up. I also get a error message stating could not read Title information.
I get a message stating /dev/dsp does not exist and I cannot create this file either. I have VIA sound card.
Also When I use kpppd to connect to Internet I get a message stating connection timeodout before kpppd interface could appear. I also get error message 19 sometimes.
How can I set these things right.

I tried removing Mozilla 1.6.9 & then replacing it with Mozilla firefox, then it opens up. I choose my fonts and style, it never opens again. I get the same message stating
floating point exception.
lsmod gets the message as above; strange,that the man for lsmod comes up OK.
It looks pretty strange to me. Hope some Mandrake Guru can fix these bugs.

Thanks; I got it working finally. I was trying setup the fonts for Mozilla, and Mozilla disappeared cannot start Mozilla how many evr times I try. Is standard Internet edition with a Firewall. I dont Viruses on my PC.
I still need to get my printer working.
Also, there is a message in the begining at the boot IDE 80 cable connection at 0 or something like to this.
After Linux loads I get a message stating cannot load sound drivers for the Mixer or something like that.

I went about installing Mandrake 10 on my computer which is Intel Pentium 4 Celeron Processor 2.7 GHz, 256 DDR RAM, I created all the partition loaded all the stuff, chose standard PC (internet edition) I did not get Firewall, but I could select it later. I chose Lexmark Printer (mine is X1150) but mandrake chose Lexmark 3000, the test page did not produce any page, Some problems with setting up Modem (external) could not resovle /conf.
Well I skipped the boot loader, then had to reuse the DVD to rescue and create a boot loader.
Now after boot, I get the boot loader with options

I chose the first three, It loads the OS, then I get to a login prompt then I login
then if I try xinit I get a message with a lot of warnings stating
errors from xkncomp are not fatal to X Server

Also in the boot up process VTA Technolgies sound card fails to be loaded.

I have tried using the kpppd dialer on Linux with my login parameters enetered. I login into the server then I get ejected outside I get an error message stating kppd error # 16, some times #19 , I once got an error #9. It is becoz I am using a Live CD, and the message states " cannot create /var/system/pppd.log and system.log file.
On Mandrake Live CD I can get an error stating /etc/conf does not exist please create this directory. I have still not installed Linux on HD. ATT does not provide software for Linux. Netzero is supposed to provide software for Lindos, which is a .deb file. I read on the internet that people have tried to convert .deb file to rpm using Alien program and have not been successful. I am new to Linux. Has anybody changed the Netzero software for Lindos to Mandrake ie netzero.deb to netzerio.rpm.
There was a idea of using a a dial up service called 650dialup.com that is supossed to not use any software. I will find more about it.

I hear that Smart Link PCI Modem work with Linux, also Lucent?Agere PCI Modems, Zoom makes the best modems SERIAL & PCI. I had a Cendyne External modem that I used till recently to access www through Linux, but one fine day it just got burnt. Now I bought this Diamond SupraExpress 56e External SERIAL Modem with whom I am having so much trouble beyond initial connection. This has a Conextant chip. Avoid every modem that has a Conextant chip inside for Linux.
