  1. Solved it - those 100 dpi and 75 dpi Xorg font packages are 0 bytes on that update mirror. Maybe it's just in process of being mirrored right now.

  2. I recently de-installed the xorg-x11 100 dpi fonts , in order to solve the crappy fonts i'm getting after upgrading from 10.0 to 10.1 - now i want to reinstall it.

    Because of a recent xorg update, i now get errors if i try to install this package.

    Any ideas how to solve this? (i've already updated my urpmi database)

    urpmi xorg-x11-100dpi-font

    You may want to update your urpmi database

  3. Commentary from the Register on the Ballmer/IP/WTO issue here:

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11/19/mi...without_firing/

    "By adopting the WTO as its intellectual property enforcement proxy, Redmond believes it has a tactic that allows it to prevail without filing a single lawsuit. "

    "So it's in Microsoft's long-term strategic interests to make writing GPL software and using it illegal."

    if true , this is seriously worrying, for all of us.

  4. Problem solved.

    1. remove the xorg-x11-100dpi and xorg-x11-75dpi packages (they have crappy helvetica and serif fonts)

    2. download and install the ms-font rpms from http://webperf.org/msfonts/

    urpmi msfonts-1.2.1-1.noarch.rpm

    urpmi msfonts-style-1.2.1-1.noarch.rpm

    3. edit /etc/fonts/local.cf - add all of your font directories

    here's mine:

    <dir>/usr/share/fonts/msfonts</dir>

    <dir>/usr/share/fonts/msfonts-style</dir>

    <dir>/usr/share/fonts/default/ghostscript</dir>

    <dir>/usr/share/fonts/ttf</dir>

    <dir>/usr/share/fonts/ttf/western</dir>

    <dir>/usr/share/fonts/freefont</dir>

    <dir>/usr/share/fonts/Dustismo</dir>

    <dir>/usr/share/fonts/ttf/decoratives</dir>

    <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/msttcorefonts</dir>

    <dir>/usr/local/share/fonts</dir>

    <dir>/usr/share/fonts</dir>

    <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts</dir>

    4. fc-cache -f -v

    5. restart your window manager (ctrl+alt+backspace )

    Voila! No more crappy fonts when looking at The Register in Konqueror:

    good-fonts-at-last.jpg

    Note that this problem occured when I upgraded via urpmi from 10.0 official to 10.1 official. Your mileage may vary.

  5. Ballmer's statements just show that Richard Stallman and his manic support for the principles of the GPL , is just so god-damn RIGHT. A lot of us, myself included, used to dismiss a lot of what Stallman said as pure hippie style pie-in-the-sky philosophy. Even Torvalds doesnt agree entirely with Stallman.

    Ballmer's threat just makes us all realise that Stallman's ideas sure as hell are NOT pie in the sky - but are deadly serious.

  6. Using netcat (nc) to capture the latest Windows worm for forensic analysis - this captures the Sasser worm (which spread via port 445)

    nc -l -v -p 445>sass$$$

    Directory listing - sort by date

    ls -tl

    sort by reverse date

    ls -trl

    sort - smallest to largest filesize

    ls -al | sort +4n

    largest to smallest

    ls -al | sort +4nr

    grep & date

    grep "$(date +"%b %d")" /var/log/messages

    so if todays date is 18th Nov, the above command would be translated into

    grep "Nov 18" /var/log/messages

    (useful for cron jobs e.g you want to be emailed if a certain message appears in your logs)

    Rename file extensions recursively down through an entire directory tree

    This finds all .bak files in my /websites directory and renames them to .bak.php

    find /websites -name *.bak | xargs -i -t rename .bak .bak.php

    Find all *.jpg files that are actually PNG files and copy them to my home dir

    (requires ImageMagick package to be installed)

    identify *.jpg | grep "PNG" | cut -d '[' -f 1 | xargs -i -t cp {} /home/kde-head/pngstuff/{}

    Mail the output of something to yourself:

    ls -al /var/lib | mail -s "lib dir" kde-head@somewhere.com

  7. I know its kind of an obvious question, but did the hardware work for you under 10.0? In my experience, buffer underruns are typically something along the lines of screensaver-interrupt, low resources, or malfunctioning hardware. I trust the burner worked previously?

    on 10.0 it didnt work either - it did work under 9.2. maybe you're right - maybe the drive really is at fault.

  8. deinstalled cdrecord and k3b , reinstalled. same problems.

  9. Burnt many dvd iso images, bunch of cd images, and some data cd's, all fine.

    10.1 OE.

    Good luck; seems to me you may have some 'upgrade' problems..

    interesting - looks like all of you people have done a fresh install, rather than a urpmi upgrade , which is what i have done.

    i'm curious - what kernels are you people using? i'd like to get to the bottom of this one, as it's very annoying

  10. upgraded from 10.0 to 10.1 , and k3b still has problems. I cannot burn ISO images , as I'm getting "buffer underrun" errors. my kernel is 2.6.8.1-12mdkenterprise

    At least that progress - in 10.0 K3B would refuse point blank to communicate with my cd burner (2.6.8 kernel changes...). Had no problems burning in releases prior to 10.0

    I thought Mandrake had patched the 2.6.8 kernel to solve these CD burning issues?

    Anyone else install 10.1 and have K3B problems, or lack of them?

  11. If you have upgraded from 10.0 official to 10.1 , your fonts might appear to be fuzzy after the upgrade. In that case you need to edit /etc/fonts/local.cf

    More details on this wiki page:

    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/XOrg%2...20Configuration

    I've posted before and after screenshots on my blog here:

    http://linuxnotes.blogspot.com/2004/11/man...fuzzy-font.html

    Here's what you need to have in /etc/fonts/local.conf - this turns on auto-hint and subpixel rendering.

    <!--  Enable sub-pixel rendering -->

            <match target="font">

                    <test qual="all" name="rgba">

                            <const>unknown</const>

                    </test>

                    <edit name="rgba" mode="assign"><const>rgb</const></edit>

            </match>

    <match target="pattern">

      <edit name="autohint" mode="assign">

          <bool>true</bool>

      </edit>

    </match>

  12. Of the last releases series since 9.2, only 10.1 beta 1 did not burn a cd for me, All the rest have, including the current 10.1 CE. Did you run the k3b setup?

    no - i didnt run the k3b setup - i just launched k3b.

    how do i launch the setup , and what options do i need to select? any kind of walk through would be very helpful.

    thanks.

  13. don't know, but I'll do it, just in case.

    your welcome TOmaz ^_^

    havent there been major kernel changes in 2.6 that handle USB devices differently to the 2.4 kernel?

    i noticed big system freezes when using a flash card reader on Mdk 10, 2.6 kernel- nothing to do with USB , but it's technically another pluggable "device" - plus there's the cd burning issues with 2.6, so it all points back to the way devices are handled in 2.6....

  14. Just did a fresh install of Mandrake 10 official, and my cd writer drive refuses to mount and as a result K3B doesnt burn.

    Anyone else notice this problem?

    10.1 doesnt fix the issue

    http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/101beta.php3

    "Known troubles:

    - Kernel 2.6.8.1 breaks CD burning as a user ; again this kernel panic at the end of installation, we are working on it."

    I suppose I just need to boot into the 2.4 kernel for now, until this problem is rectified?

  15. 2 questions though , is there a way of playing  music while playing Enemy Territory ?

    Just upgraded to 10.0 - nvidia card - when i run enemy territory my KDE resets itself.

    And yes, i've got the latest nvidia drivers from their website.

    in fact, i've never been able to get ET to run on 10.0 or lower. maybe 10.1 is the solution?

  16. http://freedesktop.org/bin/view/XOrg/Home#...1R6_8_1_Release

    In response to demand of users and application developers, X.Org's X11R6.8 brings forward widely anticipated fundamental facilities through this release. They include the first X Window System support for:

    Translucent windows

    Window animation, window decorations like shadows

    Support for accessibility applications

    Support for 3D immersive user environments like=20 Looking Glass(1) and Croquet

    Support for large scale display walls using DMX(3)

    These new facilities, some of which are still considered experimental, and so not enabled by default, have been under development for several years. Once completed and deployed, they will enable X Window System desktop projects, such as Gnome and KDE, to greatly extend their visual user interface vocabulary while still ensuring uncompromised support for existing applications, even surpassing current state of the art in competing window systems.
