  1. Two important questions :

    1) The kernel bug mentioned by Liquid Zoo, is that present in the x86_64 RC1 distibution as well ?

    2) Are the 2005 limited edition x86_64 final iso's be available as free downloads eventually unlike earlier editions ?

    Thanks,

    A.

  2. Since I haven't received a reply may be I should paraphrase the question - I am sure that this is a simpler question than the previous one.

    a) Can I run Mdk-10.1 x86_64 and i586 distros on the same set of partitions? So if I need to build i586 rpms should booting with a 586 kernel be the workaround to my problem?

    B) If the answer is yes to the above - which distro should I install first x86_64 or i586 ?

BTW, I only have the amd64 rc1 CDs - I intend to upgrade them after installing them.

    c) If the answer to a) is negative - how should I proceed?

I hope that people out there would be able to help me out on this one.

    Thanks,

    A.

  3. Maybe this is problem with trivial solution but I am not sure how to get this done .

    Here is my problem :

I finally got an Athton 64 machine and hurriedly installed the 10.1-rc1 ( can't afford the real thing ).

Though the release has 3CD and thus some of the development stuff are missing - its not much of a

trouble to get the srpms and compile them on the machine or install the precompiled ones from the official repositories.

But soon I discover that not all the softwares have been ported to x86_64.

Surely you can get the sources - but not all of them build. For instance, scilab-3.0 is available for 32bit machines - I tried building from the source with "rpm --rebuild " but build doesn't complete.

I was wondering whether it is possible to run the scilab 32-bit binaries on this machine without booting with the x86 kernel ? The naive "rpm -ivh " replies that certain libs missing though their 64bit brothers are installed on the machine. Should I force the rpm ? What other possibilities exist?

    Help would be appreciated.

    Best,

    A.

  4. If you want the latest xorg rpms for 10.1 get them at

    http://rpm.nyvalls.se/index10.1.html

Since svetljo isnt available to continue his work has i

continued developing the xorg rpms myself

Dont forget to update to the latest Mesa-6.2 also.

The kde-3.3.1 and gnome-2.9 that i also have online is built on top of

    xorg-6.8.1 and Mesa-6.2.

First, I would like to thank you for your excellent rpms - specially the xorg and nvidia driver rpms that I ran on Mdk10.0. Though the rpms are there, I prefer getting the SRPMS and compiling them on my machine. But in your 10.1 srpm repository - there is no xorg-6.8.1 srpm. Should I/we get the ones for 10.0 and build them on 10.1 ?

    Thanks again,

    A.

  5. Taking the clue from Dragonmage I upgraded the kernel to 2.4.22-37mdk ( the latest upgrade for Mdk 9.2 ) - the problem persists.

BTW, I am using xorg - could this be the problem though I seriously doubt it.

What about upgrading to 2.6 series ?

    A.

  6. Isn't the latest kernel for Mandrake 9.2 is 2.4.22-37mdk now? I mean.. it's been a while since I used Mandrake 9.2 but I still keep a mirror of Mandrake 9.2 update tree in my hard drive from July and the kernel then is 2.4.22-36mdk. That kernel runs the 6106 NVidia driver for my GF4Ti4200 perfectly.

    Thanks for the response -

I didnot even suspect before attemptimg with PCLinuxOS that

the kernel might be the suspect. This is because my old GeForce MX200 was

working perfectly before sticking in the 5700 !

I'll try out the upgraded kernel and see how it goes.

After digging through the nvidia linux forum - it appears to me that this problem happens with the

    FX series cards mostly.

    Cheers,

    A.

  7. OK - no response so far from the forum

So here's what I found - if I use the PCLinuxOS-7 from TexStar - the nvidia driver set

5336 works - I can even run ut2003 on my ancient hardware !

So the problem is with the kernel.

Are there any > 2.4.22-28mdk kernel(s) from Mandrake which run the nvidia drivers smoothly?

    Thanks,

    A.

  8. I decided to put in an nvidia FX5700 video card to replace a GeForce MX200 on an Aopen 440BX mobo.

running PIII 733 (coppermine) with 256 MB Ram.

Under Mdk 9.2 (kernel- 2.4.22-28mdk) - X freezes within 3-4 secs after I start any 3d apps. In fact, the system freezes even when I ask for "glxinfo". No such problem arise when I only use 2d apps like say Mozilla/Galeon. It happens only when 3d is requested .

I am using the 1.0.6111 drivers - this also happened with the 1.0-6106 as well. No such problem occured

    with the MX200.

What is weird that under Windows I can run 3d stuff like Quake/Quake2 without any glitch.

Can anyone help or even verify the problem. Or is it because of the ancient Mobo+CPU?

But, then the combo shouldn't work under windows as well !

    :help:

    A.

PS: I have tried the releases 6106 , 5336 - don't work. Neither do the options NvAGP =0 or 1 in XFConfig-4. Any

  9. Arctic, seriously, you are starting to sound like a Luddite who has had one too many cups of coffee with a Minimalist.

errrm... maybe you are right. i had lots of coffee these last days. :lol2:

in that case, turn off your computer, leave your house, go off into the woods, start a fire, and hunt your food with wooden spears and spearheads shaped from rocks while living in a cave. because, from your point of view, everything except those things is "bloat".

okay, i am going out now and walk into the woods. good idea anyway. ;)

    I thoroughly enjoyed this discussion.

Hope to read more such illuminating threads here.

  10. I doubt there are many people on this board who have both an AMD64 and a P4 xxxxx. If you want comparisons I think you would be better off at a site dedicated to hardware reviews.

    Good luck.

You have a point - but most of the hardware sites are mostly windows specific. Linuxhardware.org is there but doesn't seems to have active forums like this site.

Besides, I really did not mean to ask for comparisons but rather opinions. I don't reckon you would need both a P4 and Athlon rig to have such opinion.

Thanks for the response though -

  11. Hi,

I have been meaning to upgrade my aging 733 MHz PIII. I am not sure which path to follow - stay with Intel or move to AMD(XP or AMD64) . I use my machine mostly for scientific computing (Mathematica/Maple/C programming) and latex ......

Could you folks suggest me what avenue to follow highlighting the pros and cons for each processor- especially the AMD64 series for my purposes? Are there any advantages like higher precisions and floating point arithmetic on AMD64 compared to Pentium4 or even Athlon XP. On the other hand, being a third worlder - I'm on a bugdet.

One more thing - My current card is a GeForceMX200. It is OK for my current usage but I was wondering would there be any advantage to upgrade to another cheap card like MX440? Though I do some occasional gaming (Q3 for eg) - gaming performance of the card is not the absolute priority. I was thinking of switching an ATI card but what I gather their linux support is not up to the mark. For instance, I tried using the 9200SE with the ATI-3.2.8 drivers ( after borrowing from a friend) but some of the gl-enabled hacks from xscreensaver were not displayed correctly.

Thanks in advance for all your forthcoming recommendations. :D

  12. Hi,

I wanted to ditch my win 2000 installation but the only reason ( now , don't laugh at me ) I have not done so is because of DirectCD. I do not know whether similar program exists on Linux. For burning CDs with TAO or DAO, I have been using xcdroast or cdrecord on CLI - but I would like to burn CDs via packet writing on linux as you do with DirectCD. Can K3b do it or are there other alternatives? Softwares with GUI would be great but I wont mind using something that only runs on CLI. Anyone care to enlighten this poor soul?

    Thanks in advance.

  13. I was wondering what the impression of the mdkuser crowd is regarding the amd64 version of Mdk 10? This could either be be the rc1 version or the version just released recently.

Though I don't have any AMD64 rig but your opinion will help meto decide whether to get one sooner or wait.

Any takers on this one ?

    Thanks in advance.

  14. It might sound weird that I do not use kde for my DE but XFCE3!!

However, the problem , as I realized , arose from the spec file requirements. I wish these conflicts

were written carefully - so that poor souls like us who try to compile rpms now and then do not

    run into such troubles.

I changed the "Requires: .... " to kde-3.1.2 so that the conflict for Mdk-9.2 does not arise. The built kdelibs rpms now installs OK except for one file conflict which I can avoid using the "--replacefiles".

Now off to building the rest of KDE-3.2.2......

Will report again if problems arise again.

    Thanks everybody! :cheesy:

  15. Dear LiquidZoo,

I really appreciate you trying to help me out here.

But, I have a catch22 situation here. Can't compile kdebase unless I have

    kdelibs > 3.2....

Remember I have Mdk-9.2 thus kdelib-3.1.3. So, no kdebase-3.2.2 does not compile unless I have kdelib-3.2, but I can't install kdelib-3.2... 'cause I have kdebase-3.1.3 ..... and it goes on.

    Thanks.

  16. Thanks for your reply.

You asked "why the srpms?" . My typical response would be why not!

My impression is that I have not managed tp spell out my problem clearly

The problem is not with the build but rather with the install. When I try to install the (locally) built

rpms this is what I get:

    --------------------------------

    rpm -Uvh libkdecore4-* kdelibs-common-3.2.2-2mdk.i686.rpm

    error: Failed dependencies:

    libkdebase4 < 3.1.91 conflicts with libkdecore4-3.2.2-2mdk

    --------------------------------

using the " rpm -ivh " makes the problem worse :

    -----------------------------------------------

    rpm -ivh libkdecore4-* kdelibs-common-3.2.2-2mdk.i686.rpm

    error: Failed dependencies:

    libkdecore4 < 3.1.91 conflicts with libkdecore4-3.2.2-2mdk

    libkdebase4 < 3.1.91 conflicts with libkdecore4-3.2.2-2mdk

    kdelibs-common < 3.1.91 conflicts with kdelibs-common-3.2.2-2mdk

    ------------------------------------------------

Any idea why the conflict would arise in the first place ??

One of the reasons for not using the Cooker built rpms is that one is not sure which version of gcc

was used to build them e.g. the qt libs. From my litle experience I have seen if one installs libqt-devel package built by say gcc-2.96 and later trying to compile another qt based app using another version of gcc then qt cannot be linked by autoconf/automake for the build. Same is true for the kernel .....

Thus, I find it is always safe to use the SRPMS and peform local build - just to mantain the sanity

of the builds. You might say I would be better off with Gentoo but I have been using Mdk since 6.0 and the distro has grown on me.

Now back to the original question ( rephrased ) :

Can I ignore the dependency problem mentioned above and use a --nodeps switch ..... and not risk a

    mess of a machine?

I can tinker with the spec file to change the kde version to get the message. Would that be advisable?

Sorry for the long post but I think that I was not clearly stating the problem earlier. ( May be it is still not clear ...)

    Thanks.

    A.

    :help:

  17. OK - this might be a dumb question but I am sure mandrakeusers have the answer

So, here is the story .....

I have downloaded the Cooker SRPMS and would like to build KDE-3.2.2 on

Mdk-9.2. ( I have already built and installed qt-3.2.3 ). The kdelibs build went on smoothly but can't install them as rpm complains kdelibs and its development package should be >= 3.1.91 . I can remove the devel package along with the others dependent on it to avoid the dependency problem but obviously can't remove

the libkdebase4 package without spoiling the dependency.

How can I get around it ? Or rather what is the sequence for building KDE-3.2.2 ?

Should I change the dependencies in the spec files ......

    Thanks in advance.

    A.

  18. Regarding Adrianovaroli's remark:

I had downloaded the 10.0CE iso's before realizing the onslaught of the updates - I thought there would be a fork of cooker ..... :wall:

Guess I was wrong and thus my earlier question came up.

BTW, I am still running Mdk 9.2.

    best,

    A.
