  1. I've tried both of those. I see no error output in the console. Mandriva 2007 gave me such a huge variety of problems I finally wiped and reinstalled 2006 from scratch. Unfortunately it still doesn't work! I ran the video tests in the Cedega interface. The "OpenGL Direct Rendering" test (the one that just runs the gears thingy) passes, but the "3D Acceleration" test fails. When I click on the information button it just says my graphics card does not appear to be set up correctly. Well everything seemed fine when I ran the NVidia driver installer. I don't even begin to know where to look, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  2. Like the title says. I got the NVidia drivers installed, no problem, but now whenever I try to start a game using Cedega, it just hangs forever. Has anybody else seen this problem? Thanks!
  3. I spoke too soon. The system sound test ran find, and I heard sound after I ran alsaconf. Then I logged out and logged back in again, and sound is gone again. I first noticed when I ran Enemy Territory: ------- sound initialization ------- /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy Could not open /dev/dsp ------------------------------------ Sound memory manager started Sys_LoadDll(/home/javaguy/.etwolf/etmain/ui.mp.i386.so)... Sys_LoadDll(/home/javaguy/.etwolf/etmain/ui.mp.i386.so) failed: "/home/javaguy/.etwolf/etmain/ui.mp.i386.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" Sys_LoadDll(/usr/local/games/enemy-territory/etmain/ui.mp.i386.so)... ok I ran ls -l /dev/dsp and got: crwxrwxrwx 1 javaguy audio 14, 3 Oct 28 20:43 /dev/dsp
  4. Fixed! I think this was closely related to the problem that was causing my NVidia driver woes. (I had the kernel source package installed, but the wrong version of it). I reran alsaconf, and everything worked. Thanks!
  5. Never mind, I figured it out. Getting sleep helped a lot. Before attempting to install the drivers I had carefully made sure to install the kernel source package. I didn't look carefully enough at what version of the kernel source I was installing. Running uname cleared it up for me.
  6. Can't anything ever be easy? ;) I upgraded to 2007, downloaded the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8776-pkg1.run file from the Nvidia web site and ran it as root. I've been through this process a number of times, and it actually went smoothly the last time I upgraded. This time, however, I got an error message saying the kernel was compiled with the wrong version of gcc. :( Has anybody seen this, and what do I do about it? Thanks!

  8. So I upgraded to Mandriva 2007, and sound stopped working. I did the "classic" sound troubleshooting, but unfortunately I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do with what I discovered. First step, run lspcidrake -v | fgrep AUDIO yields snd-ice1724 : IC Ensemble Inc.|ICE1724 [Envy24HT] [MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO] (vendor:1412 device:1724 subv:14c3 subd:1705) So then I run grep sound-slot /etc/modprobe.conf, which yields alias sound-slot-0 snd-ice1724 Next I run /sbin/lsmod, and this is what I get: Module Size Used by lp 10728 0 parport_pc 32260 0 ppdev 8356 0 parport 33512 3 lp,parport_pc,ppdev usblp 12352 0 floppy 55172 0 gameport 11912 0 ipv6 237120 14 snd_ac97_bus 2848 0 snd_page_alloc 8712 0 soundcore 8096 0 natsemi 25344 0 forcedeth 26508 0 af_packet 17960 2 video 13924 0 thermal 11240 0 processor 21448 1 thermal fan 4036 0 container 3968 0 button 5808 0 battery 8260 0 ac 4292 0 ide_cd 35776 0 binfmt_misc 9800 1 loop 15400 0 nls_iso8859_1 4800 1 ntfs 266940 1 reiserfs 255044 2 sg 30776 0 sd_mod 18560 0 dm_mod 49944 0 cpufreq_ondemand 6956 0 cpufreq_conservative 6952 0 cpufreq_powersave 2400 0 cpufreq_nforce2 5456 0 nvidia_agp 7068 1 agpgart 27240 1 nvidia_agp nvram 8104 0 usb_storage 88452 0 scsi_mod 119016 3 sg,sd_mod,usb_storage ehci_hcd 29160 0 ohci_hcd 19012 0 usbcore 113472 5 usblp,usb_storage,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd tsdev 7040 0 evdev 8864 1 ext3 124936 4 jbd 51028 1 ext3 Should I be seeing snd-ice1724 somewhere in that list? If not, then what am I looking for? If it should be there but isn't, what should I do? Thanks in advance!
  9. Currently when I push the PrintScreen key, KDE brings up KSnapshot. This is fine, but I have an application that needs the PrintScreen key and doesn't want it overridden. Can somebody explain to a newbie how to unmap that key? Thanks! Sam

    Kmail

I have a question, and I don't know if it's kmail-related, e-mail-related or something to do with the domain to which I'm trying to send e-mail, but I'm posting here in hopes that somebody can point me in the right direction. I have a friend whose e-mail is at isp.com (yes, that's the real domain name), and when I send her a message it sits in my outbox and tries again and again and again to send the message, supposedly without success. Finally I have to delete the message from my outbox. Then a couple days later she tells me she got 164 copies of the message. :o Hers is the only address I have trouble sending messages to. Any ideas? Thanks! Sam
  11. Ran alsaconf. I don't think anything is muted, but here's what my kmix looks like: http://www.sammckee.com/images/kmix.jpg and http://www.sammckee.com/images/kmix2.jpg
  12. I didn't do anything else, just removed the old card, popped the new one in, tried running a couple of games and, when they didn't work, ran the driver install. It's a SB Live! 24-bit card, and I agree X shouldn't touch sound, but I can't imagine what else it could be. I had sound right up to the point when I booted to runlevel 3 to install the drivers, and never since. Graphics look stunning though.
  13. I got a new NVidia card and wondered if I had to reinstall the NVidia drivers. Since every opengl-ish game I run crashed without doing that, I took this as a sign that yes, I did have to. So I reinstalled the NVidia drivers, and now all my games run beautifully, except that now there's no sound. I don't think anything's muted, and the volume on everything in KMix is turned all the way up.
  14. The clip region is from CSS2, but I haven't seen it used much. http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/visufx.html YinYeti's solution looks great, though. I'll give it a whirl tonight. Thanks!
  15. :) That helps, but now it seems to work in IE and not in Mozilla. (It was purely by accident I found out it works in IE, I swear!)
  16. Well I think I have the idea, but I can't get the clip rect to change dynamically: bgDiv = document.getElementById( 'navbar_bg' ); bgDiv.style.clip = "rec ( 300, 800, 380, 0 )"; It does recognize the clip rect I define for navbar_bg when I declare the div. It just doesn't change it dynamicallys. I don't see any errors in the javascript console.
  17. They're not all in one file, but they could be. But they are is the "on" version of some buttons on a layer in front of them. They "off" version on the front layer is the same image only with parts of it transparent. Rather than just do an image-switch to change from the "off" to the "on" version when the user clicks it, I thought it would be a cool bit of eye-candy to have all the "on" images in a div behind it and slide the clip rect. But yeah, the front div could be an image map of buttons instead of individual images, and the back could be all in one image file. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks!
  18. I have a web page with a DIV behind all the other DIVs. Its purpose is pure, gratuitous eye-candy. What it has is a column of GIF files, and I want to set the DIV's clip to a rect that shows only one at a time. The reason I don't just change the the .src of the images to show only the one I want is that I actually want the clip rect to slide from one image to the next by setting a timer function that will move the clip rect a little bit every so many milliseconds until it reaches its destination. So here's my condundrum: How do I figure out the exact coordinates of each IMG so I know where to move the clip rect?
  19. HP Photosmart 2575 scanning not working-- This worked under Manrake 10.1. It was sometimes a little flaky, but it wasn't really supported then either, so I didn't mind. I was able to scan documents. I recently installed Mandriva, and now xsane says it can't find a scanner and exits. I went into MCC->Hardware->Set Up Scanner, and it recognized the all-in-one, said it isn't in the database and asked if I want to configure it manually. I said yes and have tried various of the HP options it listed, but still when I fire up xsane it just says it can't find any scanners. Sound. This too worked under Mandrake 10.1. It says it finds the sound card, I double-checked that the volume is turned up, but I can't hear anything. :(
  20. Is there a free way to convert .MOV files to .AVI files?
  21. I have a bunch of JPGs arranged in directories that describe when the pictures where taken, i.e. there's a directory called "2002", one called "2003" and so on. Under each there are month directories, "2003 June", "2003 July" and so on, and under each of these there are further directories called batch1, batch2 and so forth. Some of the batch directories, however, are empty, and I've been thinking about a script to clean them up. My first step was to write a script to identify the empty directories. Here's my first attempt. #!/bin/sh cd /home/javaguy/Documents/Photos DIRS=$(ls -d 2*) for DIR in $DIRS do echo "Changing to directory $DIR" cd "$DIR" MONTHS=$(ls -d *) for MONTH in $MONTHS do echo "Checking $MONTH..." if [[ -d '$MONTH' ]] then echo "Changing to month directory $MONTH" cd "$MONTH" BATCHES=$(ls -d batch*) for BATCH in $BATCHES do if [[ ! `ls $BATCH` ]] then echo "$BATCH is empty." fi done cd .. fi done cd .. done Here's the problem with this. When it lists all the directories under "2002", it sees directories called "2002 January" and such. I'd like it to check to see if "2002 January" is a directory and, on finding that it is, to cd into it and further check all its subdirectories. But what it does instead is first check to see if "2002" is a directory and then if "January" is a directory (neither exists at that level). How can I make it recognize that "2002 January" is a single directory name?

    Gimp question

Is there an easy way to use Gimp to convert a directory of TGA files into JPGs?
  23. Please bear with me for a relative newbie question. The only apps I'm currently running are Konsole and Mozilla, and I haven't been doing anything unusual (I don't think) with either, so I'm trying to figure out why I get this when I check my free memory: > free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1036016 960160 75856 0 204288 327628 -/+ buffers/cache: 428244 607772 Swap: 1903660 0 1903660 I've run top and didn't see anything noteworthy. How do I figure out what's taking up 960160 bytes of my RAM?
