Hi VeeDubb, I'm stuggling to do a similar thing and think I'm about half way there, so the following might be of some help. Win98 (don't have XP) Make sure LMHOST.SAM or equivilent is filled in with IP and name of the linux box at least. (This I only realised after many hours) Mandrake Make sure /etc/samba/lmhosts is filled out likewise also /etc/hosts Then from Ksambaconfig tool I set share level security then ticked browsable, guest and available for each directory I want to share. I dont have any passwords set. For the printer connected to Mandrake add /var/spool/samba to the path setting, tick allow any users and map guest to nobody (default settings I think). I only just got the printer to work from windows. I uninstalled all printers the started again choosing the network printer. Also, I don't know if I had to do this but in the users tab of sambaconfig I moved accross the nobody user to the users column. Finally, it seems to work, CUPS shows user 'nobody' when I print from Win98. I can mount the windows directorys (using LinNeigbourhood) and I can see my /home on the windows machine. Sorry if these tips are a bit vague but I don't really know what I am doing :? Let me know how it goes, and what errors if any you get. I'm sure I've had them as well. Mike

If you have Mandrake 9.1(or KDE3.1) then the KDE control centre has a Samba configuration tool. I'm strugling to get a printer on mandrake available to a couple of windows machines. The file sharing was reasonably easy to set up using this program.

I only just got my pack on Monday 12 May, and the email with DHL tracking number arrived on Tuesday! I live in France so would assume I'd be one of the first to receive it, where are you? Maybe it's on it's way. The email you got a month ago could not have been confirmation of despatch as I believe Mandrake only finished manufacture a week or two ago. Do you still have the Mandrake order reference where you can track the order at Mandrake Store? Mike

Hi, I've had some similar problems in the past. Have you disabled 'zeroconf'? I'm not sure what it does but it caused some problems for me. Also, are you sure the network configuration has been saved correctly? I once had a problem where changes I made to the machines IP address, gateway address and subnet mask were not permanently stored. (That may have been due to zeroconf). Sorry, I'm not very specific, but I am not at my Mandrake machine right now. Mike

Glitz said.. I just installed 9.1(clean install) from the Powerpack and can only say it was a flawless installation! It took about 30 minutes from start to finish, then another 10 minutes to get the latest nvidia drivers installed. The network was setup in about 1 minute. All other hardware was correctly detected as far as I can tell (computer is home built AMD about six months old). In less than one hour my system is up and running. As far as stability it´s; early days yet, but I had 9.1 installed for a couple of weeks as a second OS on this same PC and apart from some problems with Kylix3 and glibc versions had no serious problems. I would definetly give it a try, perhaps on a spare partition if you have one. Mike

I compared the two modules files between 9.0 and 9.1 and found no difference as far as usb was concerned. I have now bought a new Logitech wireless mouse and after just plugging it in it to the usb port it now works on both 9.0 and 9.1 without any futher changes! Strange that the other mouse worked in 9.0 but not 9.1?? Anyway the bootup process is much quicker now for 9.1 with the new mouse. Thanks for the suggestions anyway. Mike

Hi On my computer I have both 9.0 and 9.1 (booted from a floppy). So they have exactly the same hardware. On 9.0 I succesfully installed a usb optical mouse (actually a Cellink portable mouse, I sure it´s completely unknown to anyone). The XF86Config-4 file lists this as /dev/usbmouse, protocol IMPS/2 and it works a treat. On 9.1 however, a disaster! Basically after learning the basics of vi and linuxconf then editing XF86Config-4 I was able to get the ps/2 mouse working again in 9.1. The problem I have is that when the usb mouse is connected, the boot process takes ages and if I select a usb mouse from MCC it does not work in 9.1 but is fine for 9.0. Any ideas?? Mike

Has anyone managed to compile with Kylix3 on Mandrake9.1?? I had kylix working fine with MDK9.0 but with 9.1 when I try to compile the simplest app using stdio.h I get all sorts of linker errors. From the Borland newsgroups some people have fixed this by re ordering the include and lib search paths. This has no effect for me. Also I read that later versions of glibc are incompatible and that for Red Hat at least you can install "compat" libs. Finally, no one on the Borland newsgroups seems to have got Kylix compiling with MDK9.1 so, has anyone here had any luck? Thanks, Mike

Thanks for the replies, I reinstalled freetype2 from texstar (not sure if it made any difference) and now use microsoft sans as the main font and it looks much better now. Mike

Hi, Are others generally happy or not with fonts in 9.1? I've just installed 9.1 on the same PC as my existing 9.0 and I think 9.0 is better. In 9.1 I have added the msfonts package from Texstar and tried AA on and off. After setting all fonts the same as I have in 9.0 through KDEs look & feel/fonts I'm still a bit dissapointed. With AA off they just look terrible and jagged. With AA on I see a distracting coulouring of the edges of some letters and it all looks a bit blurry. I was almost too scared to launch Open Office but supprisingly this looks better on 9.1. It's more the KDE desktop things such as menu, taskbars etc and especially web pages in Mozilla which I have tried to configure quickly. For the same settings (fonts/sizes) 9.0 definetly looks better on the same machine/screen (17" TFT). The only difference I think is the version of Nvidia driver. It's the last but one on 9.1 and the one before that on 9.0. I remember installing Freetype2 for MDK9.0 but it seems this is already in 9.1. I've also tried moving the order of font directories in the X86 confing file. Without delving too deeply into config files what have you done to get decent fonts? Or are they fine just as they are? I recently bought a new TFT monitor (Hercules Prophetview) with DVI input. My graphic card (nVidia) has VGA and DVI out, so I just took away the VGA monitor and plugged in the DVI and switched on. Worked first time with no adjusments (except for changing the monitor resolution in Mandrake Control Center). The only complaint I have is that about 50% of the time when I boot up, the monitor selects the VGA input and the screen is all garbled. All I have to do is press two buttons on the monitor to select DVI input and all is well again. So, the short answer is, yes, it should work! Mike

I've now got Kylix3 up and running, here is a quick summary of what worked for me. Make sure XFree86-devel-4.2.1-3mdk.i586.rpm is installed beforehand. If you wish, as root, type sh setup.sh -m Save the emailed registration key file in your home directory. That's it. Mike

So far, I've spent literaly 2 minutes with C++ compiling within the IDE. I intend to read the docs a bit more when I have time tommorow. My 'program' was a single button with close(1); just to try quickly. The error was libX11.so not found. I searched my filesystem and I don't have this file. Maybe I need to configure something or add this file. Just for info I use Mandrake 9.0, Xfree 4 and the Nvidia drivers (not the very latest version but the ones before). I'm still new to Linux and a bit confused as to how X, Nvidia drivers and the OS all interact. If you have any suggestions as to why I am missing this file libX11.so and what it does, I'd be gratefull to hear. Thanks, Mike <edited> PS. Just had a thought, when I installed 9.0 I didn't add any of the development apps. I found the file in XFree86-devel-4.2.1-3mdk.i586.rpm so I'll try installing that this evening.

I found this tip on another forum (I forget which one) As root, type sh setup.sh -m I'm not sure what the -m does, but it works! Kylix then installs correctly, then looks for the licence key which is an email attatchment that should be saved in your home directory. The email comes from Borland when you register. The IDE starts up fine now, but following the warning I recieved during the install: WARNING: could not locate libX11.so I now get a Fatal Linker Error that this lib is not found when I try to compile a simple test program. I recently had the same problem with the RPM database, though not as a result of trying to install Kylix. The only way I could fix it was to delete all media and then add it again. Hi, I downloaded Kylix3_open from Borland and followed the install intructions. After unpacking, I ran systemtest and got Checking loader....OK Checking kernel >= 2.2....OK Checking libc >= 2.1.2....OK Checking libjpeg >= 6.2.0....OK Looks GOOD !!! This system should be able to run Borland Kylix! Then typing sh setup.sh as root I get WARNING: could not locate libX11.so Then some other libraries are checked then a dialog box opens. After clicking install (with default options) I then get the following error and the installation exits. Unable to install RPM file: 'setup.data/packages/kylix3_main_program_files-1.0-1.i386.rpm' Any ideas what might be wrong? I am using Mandrake 9.0, the documentation for Kylix says it's certified to work on 8.2. Mike PS. Trying to install with RPM I get this error.. [root@lipton packages]# rpm -i kylix3_main_program_files-1.0-1.i386.rpm rpmdb: Program version 4.0.14 doesn't match environment version 3.1.14 error: db4 error(22) from dbenv->open: Invalid argument error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Invalid argument (22) error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

Thanks for all the help. In /var/lib/rpm I found no _db.0 files. So as I said I deleted all the sources and then used urpmi.addmedia to restore my ftp sources. For the distribution cds I did as beesea suggested and all is now fine! Cheers, Mike

I tried rpm --rebuilddb as root and this made no difference. What I've done now is removed all the sources and am now adding them again using urpmi.addmedia This seems to work for ftp sites at least, I now have another problem with the 3 installation cds. I can mount them, no problem, but when I try "urpmi.addmedia Mandrake1 removable://mnt/cdr/Mandrake/RPMS with ../base/hdlist.cz" I get the error 'unable to access medium "Mandrake1"' Just out of interest, how does urpmi know what is already installed? Does it scan the entire system during bootup or is there a file listing all packages. What happens if you delete something without going through urpmi? Cheers, Mike

Hello All, I've almost always used the Mandrake Control Center / Install Software to add RPM packages. Now I always receive the following error message: " Everything already installed (is this supposed to happen at all?) " I get this for all RPMs even those that I definately do not have installed. The source, be it removable or ftp makes no difference. I have updated all sources. I can find nothing in the logs that might explain what has happened. Does anyone have any ideas what may have happened? The only significant thing I've done since it was last working is to remove, then add the 3 installation cd's to a different mount point. I also removed (using MCC/remove software) Eroaster. Also, I downloaded 'arson' mdk.rpm (CD burning GUI) from rpmseek and attempted to install, I think kpackage launched and complained of some conflict. From thn on I had problems with MCC/Software Install. Thanks Mike. > MDK9.0

Hi, I installed mandrake 9.0 some weeks ago onto a new computer and accepted all the defaults during installation. This left me with / = 3.5Gb, /swap = 256Mb and /home = 76Gb. I have since reduced /home in size and added a /media to keep photos etc. What I would like to do now is create seperate (much larger) new partitions for /usr and /var. Diskdrake does not allow me to simply increase the size of / presumably because it is immediately followed by the other partitions. I've done searches on this forum and others but not really found what I'm looking for. I saw a post that suggested that a new partition with the same name as an existing directory will automatically copy all data over.?? How can I safely create these two new partitions? I can leave / as 3.5Gb and have 20 Gb at the end of the disk currently unused for anything. In fact, is it posible at all? I'd also like to double the size of /swap. I have only Mandrake 9.0 on this machine and the disk is an IBM 80Gb with 256Mb RAM. I'll just note that when I resized /home and created /media with diskdrake I was asked to reboot which I did. I then got a 'superblock' error and a refusal to boot futher. Not really knowing what to do, I was able to launch diskdrake from the console mode as su and repeat what I had already done from X/KDE. Could anyone recomend an audio recording package that is simple to use (and install). I'd like to convert loads of vinyl records into cds/mp3 files. I've seen web home pages for very complicated multitrack recording projects, but something very simple that just records from line-in to a wav file (stereo) would be fine. Preferably with a GUI.
