so I'm trying to run wine, it won't work at all. Everything I try gives me this same error:

heeey, there we go. I got VLC outputting to a file then I used netcat to transfer that file ot a file on my computer which I then read again with vlc :)
Excellent quality too. Horrible delay though. About 3 minutes.
-
So my friend pointed me towards netcat...can't figure anything out using that for FTP...but I did manage to use netcat to play my audio on my gf's computer by piping /dev/dsp into/out of it...but I tried earlier piping /dev/video0 to a file I created, but webcam_server wouldn't read that. So I'm thinking I could pipe her /dev/video0 to my /dev/video0 (can't test it at the moment 'cause her camera is acting up), but then I can't send her my video. And since I can't transfer her video0 to just any file, I'm not sure what to do.
And her webcam is back up now, and that plan failed. Seems like whenever she would hit enter on her end to start the command, the server on my end would close. Odd that it works with audio but not video....
-
Ok, so here's the problem. My girlfriend's off at college, and we wanna get a webcam chat thing up and working, but none of the programs we've tried will work on both of our computers. We're both on Mandriva 2007.1. But anyways, the lightweight webcam_server does work perfectly. I already have a site up from my computer so that she can view mine, but the problem is, being at school, she's behind the university network, and the whole NAT and firewalls and crap make it pretty much impossible for her to run a server. So I figured the best bet would be to find a simple way to push the image files from her computer to mine, and then write a simple refresh script. I was thinking FTP, but anything really would work...I just need some way she can auto-login and automatically drop the files. Any ideas?

ok, that was a bit helpful...but...well, here's the output of /etc/init.d/alsasound stop:

Problem is, I still have no sound no matter what I try (running alsaconf, changing what card it uses, rebooting, starting and stopping alsa and alsasound, and even reinstalling the alsa-driver and alsa-utils packages)...and I can't figure out how it could possibly be in use.
Here's the relevant parts of dmesg:
[root@localhost urza9814]# dmesg | grep alsa ALSA /home/urza9814/Desktop/alsa-driver-1.0.12rc3/usb/usbaudio.c:1278: 3:2:1: cannot set freq 48000 to ep 0x83 [root@localhost urza9814]# dmesg | grep snd usbcore: registered new driver snd-usb-audio Modules linked in: ndiswrapper af_packet video thermal processor fan container button battery ac ide_cd binfmt_misc ipv6 loop ntfs nls_utf8 nls_cp437 vfat fat dm_mod amd64_agp agpgart evdev tsdev usbmouse usbhid snd_usb_audio snd_pcm snd_timer snd_page_alloc snd_usb_lib snd_rawmidi snd_seq_device quickcam snd_hwdep snd videodev soundcore ehci_hcd usblp ohci_hcd usbcore ext3 jbd sd_mod sata_uli libata scsi_mod usbcore: deregistering driver snd-usb-audio

Ah! So for some reason alsaconf, though it is the 1.0.12 version, is using alsasound instead of alsa. Which confuses the hell out of me, because I actually completely removed alsasound from the /etc/init.d directory. So does anyone know how to get alsaconf to go back to the older alsa version? Or just how to uninstall alsa 1.0.14 installed from a tarball?
-
Oh, here's an interesting development: I set it to use the OSS drivers is mcc, and it freezes up there too. (not the computer, just alsa. says applying settings forever)
Other information recently learned:
It was trying to use the 2.6.17.13mdv kernel sources, when I'm on 2007.0 and therefore use 2.6.17.5mdv. I recompiled both with the older kernel sources and booted with the older kernel sources (somehow I now have options for both in grub). alsa 1.0.14 still gives me the same error, 1.0.12rc3 still freezes. However, I'm now down to one problem in the dmesg:
snd_intel8x0: Unknown symbol snd_verbose_printk
However, my emu10k1 card I can't even get to output an error message. Just flat out doesn't work.
-
So I installed alsa-driver-1.0.14, the latest version, and it still failed, though it failed with output this time. Here's the dmesg:
snd_emu10k1: Unknown symbol snd_free_irq snd_emu10k1: Unknown symbol snd_verbose_printk snd_emu10k1: Unknown symbol snd_request_irq snd_intel8x0: Unknown symbol snd_free_irq snd_intel8x0: Unknown symbol snd_verbose_printk snd_intel8x0: Unknown symbol snd_pci_quirk_lookup snd_intel8x0: Unknown symbol snd_request_irq
So after screwing with that a while, googling it with a series of the same problem solved by either reboot or with no answer given, I tried going back and installing over it with alsa-driver-1.0.12rc3, which is giving me the same problem as before.
-
Ok, so I won't go into WHY I did this, but I seem to have removed the kernel-source-2.6.17.13mdv package from my main computer. And it seems ndiswrapper won't start without this package. But I can't urpmi it, because I have no internet, because ndiswrapper won't start. So, after a bit of a failure trying google, could someone point me to somewhere I could download this from another computer?
-
So I was trying to get wengo to work...so at some point I attempted running it as root, and since then my alsa has been toasted. I've tried re-running all the various methods of configuring it...I've tried simply rebooting several times...and I even tried a 'grep -C 1 alsa /var/log/*/*', but it doesn't appear that it outputs anything to the log while it's starting up. Anyways, I try to run it, and all I get is this:
[root@localhost urza9814]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/alsa start Starting ALSA version 1.0.12:
Anyone know any way I could get more info or attempt to fix this?
-
ah. that would be a problem.
However, I'm failing to find any newer versions....I do now see that that is an archive mirror, but I can't seem to find jserv on any of the current mirrors or through a search of the main apache site....
-
I recently installed the jserv mod to apache, but the thing is giving me an ap_null_cleanup error.
Here's the error code:
[root@localhost ServletTest]# httpd httpd: Syntax error on line 173 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/mod_jserv.so into server: /etc/httpd/modules/mod_jserv.so: undefined symbol: ap_null_cleanup
My apache version:
[root@localhost ServletTest]# httpd -v Server version: Apache/2.2.3 Server built: Jul 28 2006 12:12:07
And the version of jserv is 1.1.2-1 from http://archive.apache.org/dist/java/jserv/ , installed from the RPM.

yup, it's showing up fine there:

-
I'm not seeing anything bad at all in /var/log/messages. But I think the problem might be that eth0 was removed after the driver was loaded. I've been trying to find a way to reinstall the driver, but I can't seem to find any.
-
So my main internet connection is wireless, on wlan0. However, I have a built-in ethernet on my motherboard that I'm trying to use for Mandriva's internet connection sharing. However, the interface eth0 doesn't exist, and when I try to run drakconnect to create a new ethernet connection, it detects the network adapter fine (Sundance Technologies Inc / IC Plus Corp | IC Plus IP100A Integrated 10/100 Ethernet), but when I hit next it says 'Unable to find interface for selected device (using sundance driver).' I know it used to exist, and I think it may have been somehow removed while trying to bridge wlan0 to my VirtualBox VMs. My question is, how do I get it back?
Here's the output of ifconfig too:

So, after looking around for nice, cheap, linux compatible laser printers, I decided on the Brother HL-2040 after reading a review saying it worked great on linux. So, I plugged it in, Mandriva picked it up immedatly, but didn't have the drivers for it. Downloaded the driver and CUPS wrapper from their website, both installed fine. Problem is, when I go to the CUPS administration page, it says 'HL2040 "Printer not connected; will retry in 30 seconds..."'. Also, whenever I try to change the settings, it brings up a password promt, and I have tried both my username and password and root with my root password, neither of which are accepted. The printer is currently connected via USB and set to auto-detect the port.(though specifically choosing a port through webmin didn't seem to work either)
edit:
rebooted, now the error on CUPS is: 'HL2040 "/usr/lib/cups/filter/brlpdwrapperHL2040 failed"'
HAH! It LIVES!
Had to reset permissions of /usr/lib/cups/filter/brlpdwrapperHL2040.

Ok, I suppose find should work. I was also confusing /w and -i after reading a page on google as a refresher.
-
that's to rename filenames though. I need to search and replace strings inside of the files.
-
Ok, so I hope you can get what I wanna do from this and tell me how to actually do it:
[urza9814@localhost CDREADY]$ sed s/ssk/..\/ssk/gw < */*.html bash: */*.html: ambiguous redirect
Basically, I have a folder of folders with HTML files, and I need to change wherever it says 'ssk' to '../ssk' for all of the html files in all of the folders. How do I do that? I mean I understand why what I typed doesn't work...but yea. What will?
-
I dunno. I did of course google it, and found a few pages referring to it.
For example:
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?thre...ssageID=3506934
http://www.nabble.com/OutOfMemory-Exception-t3638970.html
http://mina.apache.org/faq.html#FAQ-Iget%2...tunderheavyload.
none of those seem to refer to a specific JVM being needed.....
...oh. damn. I just noticed under the 'version' info of Java, it's not actually Java. It's running 'JamVM'. Even though I ran the Java installer, like, 5 times with different versions and such. wtf. Oh well, let's try it with first removing this damn JamVM thing.
edit:
Ok, it won't let me remove JamVM, and I can't figure out where java is supposed to go and how to get it there, but I replaced the line in the script with the full path of the real java binary, and it appears to be working. But any help fully replacing this JamVM thing would be appreciated.

I recently had to reinstall Mandriva 2007 after it was completely formatted. Anyways, I'm trying to get Freenet running again, but I'm getting the following error, and their own support mailing list is no help at all.
[root@localhost freenet]# sh start-freenet.sh Detected freenet-ext.jar Detected freenet.jar Sun java detected. Sun Java 1.4.2 detected. I've tried a few different versions of Java, but they all give the same error, and when I try just removing that argument, it won't start at all. Anyone know what's going on?

finally got around to trying that. Obviously sound is not a high priority to me :P It required a full reboot, not just a logout, but that was indeed the problem. Then of course I had to mess with the mixer, but yea, seems to be working now. Thanks :)
-
So here's an interesting (and hopefully quite simple) problem: my audio only works as root. As root it'll work fine...plays from amarok, plays from VirtualBox, plays from anything. When I try to configure the KDE sound system, I get the following error: 'device: default can't be opened for playback (Permission denied)'
Now it seems to me that this should be fairly easy to fix...but I can't seem to figure out how.
-
That didn't work for me. The commands executed fine, and the monitor icon in the system tray thing said it was connected to br0, but no application in Mandriva or the VM could connect to the internet, and I tried rebooting the computer, and br0 stays but is not connected anymore and tap0 disappears.

No, actually, I'm running the 32 bit version because my wifi card wouldn't work right on the 64 bit version.
Funny story though. I just shut down to check out the CD I used to install, make sure it was 32 and there wasn't some weird ndiswrapper thing that it just worked after my last install (fairly recently), and I decided while it was down I'd try plugging in my other 300 gig hard drive that's just kinda been sitting there disconnected. So anyways, I do that...and it won't boot up. So I unplug the drive...and it still won't boot up. The bootloader won't even start. So I go to rescue, restore bootloader...no luck. So I end up running the installer, telling it to not format anything, not change anything pretty much, just letting it run the bootloader install part...boot up...and now wine works.
Computers are so damn weird sometimes...lol
