  1. ...I am using the mandrake kernel...I haven't changed anything from the basic mandrake install...
  2. Yea, you have to use the mandrake screensaver app, under system > configuration > other > screensaver For some reason the KDE ones don't work right.
  3. Ok...for a while here it looked like my entire windoze C drive had been formatted totally. Now I get the feeling it's a linux problem...problem is it's not in the bootloader, I don't wanna risk reinstalling without a backup, and linux can't make a backup. Anyways, I used harddrake to mount the drive, and it appears to work fine...but here's the weird part...I open it in konqueror, and there's nothing there. Not even the usually garbage files seen in a corrupt file. Ok, I just about freak out there, thinking my mom's gonna kill me if I screwed this up again and can't get the stuff back...so my first instinct is to look for recovery tools...the ones that run on linux won't read FAT32 though...so I'm about to post here looking for one when I think of something...I go to the properties of /mnt/win_c on konqueror...it says it's 38gigs...I go there on harddrake, and it says 10...and it should be 10. I then tried nautilus, gets the same thing, properties says it contains nothing...but it says 'Volume: Root Volume', and the folder has these weird stripes on the icon...oh, and guess what? my / drive is 39GB. Hmm...konqueror says size: 4.00KB...and space on disk: 34 of 38GB...same space on disk as / Oh, and properties on /dev/hda1 show the same size... So, as I've been writing this and trying things as I wrote it, I think I've gotten a pretty good idea of what the problem is...but no idea how to fix it. Anyone got any ideas? ...and if you say I have to reinstall imma be getting quite annoyed...'cause I've already had to do that TWICE today! stupid 10.1... [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  4. reinstalling really isn't that hard...do you people not use a separate /home? It makes it soo much simpler...I just ran the installer...took about 20 minutes...and all my settings were still there, all my files were still there, no backing up needed...I lost a few apps, but those weren't that hard to replace...
  5. hmm...it would appear that that doesn't work...it logs into the room just fine, but it's not showing any messages...I connected to #musb through the web version here, and opened up IRSSI, and sent a message on this one, and it didn't appear on IRSSI...here's what I get: ...hmm...if I type in /join #musb from there it gets me in and I can see the messages...but with just the autojoin I can't...
  6. thanks! hopefully that'll work... edit: crap! it connects fine, but it's not quite working...I think it's not scrolling right...
  7. I need either a way to do this on IRSSI or another CLI IRC prog that I can do this with...basically what I want to do is have a way to run the program, connect to a server, and join a room, all in one command. Like I know with IRSSI you can do 'irssi --connect=[server]', but I need some way to join a room like that too. Anyone got any ideas? I'm thinking maybe a way to edit the config file to auto-join a room or something...that'd work if there was an option for it on some prog...
  8. Meh...nothing else worked, and reformatting isn't that big of a deal for me...I have two partitions, / and /home, so I only formatted /, and everything's working now...lost any root config files, but that's really just my xmms playlist (I load a lotta songs from my windoze drives, so I run xmms as root)
  9. aight...I went into the mandrake download page, installed perl from there, and now urpmi works...but...I still don't have mcc...anyone know how I can get that back? I'm going to search the rpms on that page for the mcc rpms, but I have a feeling that's gonna take a while and a lot of packages...anyone have any better ideas? edit: ahh...I see...I have to urpmi draktools...getting rpmdrake right now...whose dependancies seem to be causing a buncha the other ones to be installed too. ok...I installed all that stuff...and I installed every package on the site that said 'drake', but I still don't have mcc...though I have most of the apps individually, so...I guess it's ok...but I'd really like to have the real mcc back...lol edit2: aight, that's it, I'm formatting...something is seriously wrong here: [root@localhost urza9814]# urpmi mozilla Everything already installed [root@localhost urza9814]# mozilla bash: mozilla: command not found [root@localhost urza9814]# urpmi epiphany Everything already installed [root@localhost urza9814]# epiphany bash: epiphany: command not found [root@localhost urza9814]# rpmdrake bash: rpmdrake: command not found [root@localhost urza9814]# urpmi rpmdrake Everything already installed [root@localhost urza9814]# urpmi mozilla-firefox Everything already installed [root@localhost urza9814]# mozilla-firefox bash: mozilla-firefox: command not found
  10. Ok...what do these progs have in common? OOo MCC Mozilla Firefox Epiphany URPMI and some VNC prog (not sure the name...not tightVNC) The reason I'm asking is I did something...and they all went away. Wouldn't be too bad if I hadn't lost mcc and urpmi...but...without them I can't see how I can do ANYTHING (well, other than DLing all the RPMs...but that'd be annoying and it woudln't fix the urpmi/mcc problem). I was messing around, trying to get irssi to work...screwing with perl and ssl, and I gave up, and tried to go to rpmdrake for some other stuff (not sure exactly what actually...lol)...and it didn't work. So I tried mcc...didn't work...so I tried 'em in konsole...said command not found. I logged out and back in (usually fixes screwy problems like these...had a lot on 10.1)...and now they aren't even on the (KDE) menu anymore. The only thing I can get out of any of them is from URPMI: so...did I screw up perl? And is there any way to fix it, short of a reinstall (tried one without formatting but it locked up) if I have to reformat I suppose I should anyways...go back to 9.2...10.1's been causing so many problems for me...9.2 never gave me any...I suppose I could try 10.2...but...I wouldn't have enough CDs :P
  11. still having the same problems... [root@localhost urza9814]# ln -s /usr/lib/libcurl.so.3.0.0 /usr/lib/libcurl.so.2.0.0 [root@localhost urza9814]# ln -s -f /usr/lib/libcurl.so.3 /usr/lib/libcurl.so.2 [root@localhost urza9814]# urpmi planeshift Some package requested cannot be installed: planeshift-0.2.011-1mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied libcurl.so.2) Continue? (Y/n) y [root@localhost urza9814]# two things I need to say about that I suppose: 1) I used -f because I already had a libcurl.so.2 in there (the one I downloaded) 2) planeshift isn't the only thing I'm trying to install that needs that, it's just the easiest to remember...usually I select them from RPMDrake, but urpmi is faster just to see if it'll work.
  12. yea...I googled it and found that, but it also said that that usually wasn't detected...I tried it anyways, but it still didn't work...so then I replaced the link with the actual libcurl.so.2 file, and it still doesn't work...anywhere other than /usr/lib that I need to put these?
  13. Hey, there's a buncha stuff I wanna install that require libcurl.so.2, and I can't figure out how to make it work...I found libcurl.so.2 and downloaded it, but where do I put it so that urpmi will detect that it's there? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  14. Hey, I just installed, via urpmi, xdosemu and freedos, and I went to try to run Fantasy General with it, and it runs, but it runs very slowly and the mouse/screen scrolling is very jerky. Anyone know how I can fix that? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  15. YES! I GOT 'EM! Well, most of 'em anyways...the prog is a demo, so it limits file size to 64K and I think some passed that...but...I got a large percentage of them anyways...thanks to Restorer2000...great prog...I may just have to buy it...only $50...hmm...I might...or my mom might to get the rest of her crap...lol
  16. Good to know...I told my bro and he seemed to think I was insane...though I don't think he realized the books were less than a buck for both of 'em...and I think the most complex language he ever tried to learn was VB...or maybe Python, I think he's working on that...but he's more of a webmaster, so I wouldn't really be surprised if he didn't know what FORTRAN was :P
  17. aight...yea...I'll look into it at least...I jsut told my mom and she is soo mad...I got some of her data after trying about 10 different programs...unfortunately it's all stuff she's done with... :/ So I gotta keep trying I suppose...maybe I'll find something... Oh, and I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm rejecting all your ideas and stuff...but damn, I really need this stuff back...a lot more than I need to solve whatever problem it is at this moment...I'm actually starting to think that the hdd might just have died (it's 5 years old...) with all the unplugging and stuff...or maybe it got too close to the case speaker...that magnet is amazingly strong...I dunno...
  18. Ey, my mom dragged me to a local church used book sale...and as we were standing in line for half an hour, I was thinking 'GAH! They better have a FORTRAN book or something!'...and I got inside...and I found 'Problem Solving and Structured Programming in FORTRAN 77 Third Edition' (1987) and 'Fundamentals of COBOL Programming Second Edition' (1969) So...any good compilers out there for these? I know, seems like a waste of money, but I like the feeling of having programming books this old, and they were only 65 cents...for both :P [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  19. Yup...I checked 'em... I don't need a new mobo...it's working fine now...I dunno...yea, this mobo is a $30 POS, but it seems fine now, so...
  20. Ok...the good news is, my computer has reparied itself yet again...everything boots fine...and the old hdd's C partition has all the data it should on it. The bad news is, that data is still all screwed up. It says there's almost 10GB there (445 free, exactly as it should be), but only about 200MB of that shows up in those weird files. I try windoze's scan disc program, but that didn't do anything. I don't yet have Linux on this drive, so I can't do anything with that yet...so...I think I'm gonna try googling for some windoze tools right now...
  21. Well, my windoze install survived the night, so, that's probably a good sign...lol...it's not a windoze virus, I know that, because data was disappearing when I was in Linux... The WinXP installer was just starting up... Hmmm...if it IS a BIOS virus, could flashing the BIOS fix it? And the MBR...is that stored on the mobo? I always thought it was a part of the HDD.... I'm thinking I'm gonna try this again when I get home from school today...try plugging the old windoze drive in and installing MDK 10.1, and if it doesn't work I'll try using the Norton Antivirus disc's thing...it's got a scanner you can boot off the CD...set the 'bloodhound' really high...lol... Also think I might reboot right now, and if I can still boot up then it's not a virus in the mobo anywhere, becuase if it was it'd take out this drive too...only thing I got on here is windoze, so it's not like it'll get slowed down with other crap...
  22. aight, something is seriously wrong here...I realized the drive was losing data INSANELY fast, so I unplugged it...then about 2 minutes later Linux started getting read write and bus errors everywhere...couldn't even shut down properly, just got a mass of never-ending errors...so then I decide to go to the new drive and just boot off that...I get an 'hal.dll is missing or corrupt' error...so I try to reinstall the bootloader for MDK 10.1 (already installed it earlier, before windoze), and it didn't work. So I try to reinstall MDK 10.1, and I get an error with hda5. So right now I'm trying to reinstall windoze...hoping that'll work...but I'm really scared now...it appears that any hdd I plug in starts losing data at an insane rate... One thing I did remember is that when I went to install windoze on the new drive the first time, my mobo started beeping and a message came up that said something was trying to modifiy the MBR...I figured it was just the windoze install and hit ok...but...it didn't do that any other time...maybe it was just 'cause it was a new drive...but...I dunno...the fact that none of three drives and multiple OSes seem to be working is kinda scary.
  23. Ok...here's the story...I got a new hard drive so I put it in and started formatting and stuff...installed a few OSes...then I put my old ones back for the night so my mom could use it the next day and stuff (this was late at night), so then today I pulled 'em back out, installed windoze on the new one, then plugged in the old one to grab the data off it...and it didn't work. I tried a buncha different stuff, figuring it was just a bootloader problem or something, but no install discs would even load up fully. So then I put both my old ones back, reinstalled the bootloader....and windoze wouldn't boot. So, I open up Linux to try to pull my stuff over that way...and I find that my C partition is totally screwed. Odd thing is, the other 2 on that drive are fully intact...but the C drive...well...
