  1. Hi chris_z, Well, I remember you could do that in MDK9.2. I am now running MDK10 Official PowerPak. Again, I did MCC>Services>Fonts and the button for "Get Windows Fonts" is not there. Are you using MDK10 yet? Richard
  2. Hi Chris, That is exactly what I did (MCC->system->drakfont). After clicking on Import Fonts > Add I get a new window called File Selection. Here I navigated to /mnt/win_c/WINDOWS/Fonts and the Files on the right side of this window are all my fonts in WinXP. In order to add them, it can only be done by adding each font individually as I can see. I tried to highlight all of them using several methods, and none of them worked: holding the left mouse button and dragging; clicking to the left of the first font>Shift key>clicking at the end of the last font; and CTRL +A....none worked. There is no button that says "Add all". Can you give me steps on how to add them in one fell swoop, please? Thanks, Richard L.
  3. Just want to add my appreciation and thanks to ANNA and TYME for all their help. I'm very grateful. Cheers, Richard L.
  4. Thanks for the link, bvc. I did a search on this site, but couldn't come up with anything (as usual). My search was MS Fonts, but the search couldn't come up with this. I wish search was more user friendly here. Any I just clicked on the rpm and they installed themselves just fine. I then opened up oowriter and checked: they were all there!! I started to import all my fonts from Windows, but it was too tedious. In MDK you have to do each one at a time (in other distros I've used, it takes just seconds), so I figured all I'd need were the socalled "free" ones. Thanks again. Richard L.
  5. All done with DragonMage, bvc's help and then help at weekly Houston LUG by two guys. John L. had to download a src.rpm after installing the one above. He got it from cooker. This had to be done so that after the NVIDIA driver was downloaded, it could be installed successfully and also get 3D Acceleration working (GeForce 5200+). Then John G. had to urpmi acpi and acpid...luckily CD1 was already in the drive so they both installed immediately. He check a file in /proc and all the Toshiba Utilities were there as well as acpi and acpid. I'm glad I had all these great "techies" to help me. I feel really luckily to have this forum and also the HLUG. That's it for this thread. I hope it will help another Toshiba Laptop user who needs acpi in order to get sound to work. Cheers, Richard L.
  6. Hey guys, I am *SO* EMBARRASSED ! I never open the case of my tower because being right-handed I am "ten thumbs on two left hands" if you get what I mean. Anyway, two weeks ago at our weekly Houston LUG workshop, a member had to open my case to check something (forgot what), and the sound card got detached from the DVD Rom Drive. So Aaron opened it up just now and attached it. So: I get sound not only on Realplayer from a website, and Frozen Bubble, but NOW ALSO FROM MUSIC CD"S!!! Please don't be upset with me. I'm VERY SORRY!!! I greatly appreciate your kindness, patience, and help. At least gettin ALSA to work was the first step and let me at least play sound on Frozen Bubble and on the web with Realplayer. Richard L.
  7. Where do I go to get the free MS Fonts? I don't remember if Mandrake has a font installer or not. I didn't find it in the KDE Control Center. Well, I just now looked in Mandrake-10-Official's MCC >System > Fonts. I see a button for "Import". If I download the MS Fonts, will they be an RPM or a Tar? If an RPM and I right click to use the Software Installer (or double click the icon), how do I import them into MCC>System>Fonts? If they are a tar, do I untar it, then go to MCC>System>Fonts and import them from the extracted tar directory? In advance, thanks to all.
  8. Hi Gowator, I followed all your instructions; however in XMMS output, when I changed to arts, there was no sound. I had to close XMMS and reopen, then I was able to choose ALSA. Went again to /usr/share/sounds and chose a .wav file, and this time it played (Honk). Then I put in a music CD, chose location, but again NO SOUND . What next should I try? Thanks for your patience. Richard L.
  9. So, do I install the kernel kernel-2.6.6.0.rc3.1mdk -1-1mdk.i586.rpm or not? bvc....I went to lilo.conf and changed acpi=ht to acpi=on...there is still no sound. In addition, I need to add the toshutils and toshiba extras. Richard L.
  10. Hi DragonMage, I tried the two links you gave me for kernels, but each one delivers me to the home page of http://mandrake.contactel.cz/ I don't understand the language there (Finnish? Hungarian? or a Slavic language?). I did a Google search for Thomas Backlund and wound up at this site, which provides kernel-2.6.6.0.rc3.1mdk : http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/15/pa...ake_org%3E.html This is the "more stable" Thomas Becklund kernel you were talking about...or is it a less stable "cooker" kernel? I've downloaded it into my home directory. Now, should I use it or not? Thanks, Richard
  11. I installed xmms wtih -alsa and -arts. Still no sound.
  12. thanks Gowater.... In Kmix, the CD source icon has the volume up (already done as default). I'm using KsCD. I changed from my CDROM-Drive to my DVD drive as my source because the CDRom Drive is sometimes buggy, causing me to reboot after it goes "dead" with a CD in it. I have tried both drives and still no sound. The only sound I get is playing frozen-bubble. I'm now going to install XMMS. RIchard
  13. Partial success: I had to install ALSA from CD1, then I rebooted. ALSA showed in the verbose mode of booting. While KDE was loading, it didn't play its catchy drum theme. Is this disabled by MDK10? So I thought all had failed (well, something did...read on). KMIX volumes are all up. I launched frozen-bubble and the theme song immediately started playing. YEAH! TuxRacer won't launch, it spins about 35 seconds and disappears. THE FOLLOWING SUCKS--Music CD's have no sound. Again....partial success. So...what's wrong with tuxracer? How do I get music cd's to play?
  14. So, bvc and Gowator, what do I do next? Also, how do I get ALSA to use for sound since it isn't the default? Many, many thanks! RCL
  15. Thanks Anna, I appreciated your putting all these links in one message. It'll be very helpful for me later this evening. My point was that ALL of these things (with the exception of firefox) should have come with Powerpak (i.e. free commerical apps) and have automatically installed, since they are basic, everyday things that almost everyone uses (with maybe the exception of kdetoys). In fact, kdetoys was automatically installed with MDK9.0, 9.1 and 9.2. Once again, thanks for taking the time. Your response should help others, too. :D Richard L.
  16. I joined the MandrakeClub as a Silver Member and downloaded/installed MDK10 Powerpak on both my computer and my laptop. (In other sections of this forum I have listed problems on both machines). 1. I thought by getting the 5 CD's for the PowerPak (and paying $132 US for the membership), that all the software I'd ever want would be included. This is what doesn't seem to be the case: 2. Where is the Realplayer? It is not on any of the 5 discs: I'm very, very disappointed. Typing urpmi realplayer does nothing as root. 3. In fact, there are no plugins in /usr/lib/mozilla-1.6/plugins. 4. In KDE, kworldclock is missing. It opens up a world map showing which parts of the world have daylight and darkness; by hovering over the dots representing cities, you see there names, date and present time. Typing as root urpmi kworldclock does nothing. 5. Typing urpmi mozilla-firefox does not work (as root). 6. I'm also very irked that you can't right-click on the desktop and have the run command as a choice in the context menu. It is so convenient...even more so than ALT +F2 (when the keyboard drawer is under the desk and you don't want to pull it out), or opening the "star", i.e. kde menu. 7. I've also attempted trying to add the above software in MCC's Software Management with no results. 8. My point is, these things should be included in the download version of the PowerPak!!! 9. If this is the case, why is there a PowerPak when the free commerical apps do not exist? This really bothers me. I really couldn't afford the membership as I am jobless. If I had known all these things would be missing, I would have downloaded the free version of MDK10 Official. I feel llike I was really burned. In addition, there are other, more serious problems with MDK10 and Kernel 2.6.3, such as bugs in the kernel to use ACPI with the laptop (for sound as well as other utilities.) I hope I can get some help with some of these issues. Sorry for ranting. In advance, thanks and I appreciate your help. Richard L.
  17. KControl: On the first tab [General]: Enable the Sound System is checked/ticked. Also, Auto-suspend if idle after 1 second is checked/ticked. On the second tab [Hardware], all is unchecked, it shows Autodetect and Quality is Default. The first thing I did was to make sure that volumn was up. Thanks, bvc
  18. Thanks bvc, I tried sound with a music--Josh Grobin CD and there was none (i.e. no sound). It was so-o-o- nice to see KsCD open up automatically and start playing automatically. How it has improved! and no confilict so far with data CD's (like the Mandrake CD1). I guess Mandrake has got its supermount finally working for both! (I hope I'm not wrong with this.) 1. 19. Thanks spinynorman, 1. I don't know nor understand what lspci is. I've tried it both as user and as root. I tried it with the command: lspci -v -v and also your way lspci -vv. Whatever it is, it returns as "Command not found". 2. I did happen to open up KMix by clicking on the volumn icon in they system tray. At the bottom it says "Cyrris logic CS 4297A Rev B". This appears to be a part of my Creative Soundblaster 16 pci card. Does this mean it is recognized the Sounblaster card and not the card on the Intel MB? 3. I clicked on Kmix's Help > Hardware Information: It states the following-- Sounddrivers supported: ALSA0.9 + OSS Sound drivers used: + OSS Do I need to change this to ALSA0.9? If so, what are steps to do this? 4. And now for my rant and get my anger of my chest: after almost 2 years with Linux Distros I get frustrated with every distro I start using. There are promises that the next version of the OS or the next version of the kernel is going to solve these common problems with common hardware. I spent $132.00 US in the CLUB for this Powerpak last week because of kernel 2.6.3. It acts like a Beta. I put MDK10 on my laptop: Toshiba 5005-S504 which requires ACPI in order to get sound to work. [NOTE: This thread is for my Desk computer and NOT my laptop.) Then DragonMage gives me the bad news that ACPI is buggy in 2.6 up to 2.6.5!!! How can Linus T. allow a new version of a kernel to come out with buggy ACPI when it was working in 2.4.22? Yes, I'm ranting because I'm losing patience and am getting angry. I'm wasting my life on bugs in SuSE9, bugs in Xandros 2.0, bugs in Libranet2.8.1, bugs in Mandrake 9.0,9.1,9.2, and now 10, when I could be doing something else MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE. I'm angry, no furious ! BUT--I still need your help ; I don't want to give up yet. This should be easily solvable. I've never had a sound issue on this computer with other distros. It is totally ridiculous that MDK isn't able to automatically have sound working when all the others can do it automatically. Richard L.
  20. Thanks Gowater, If you'll look again at my command line results above, it showed that I su'ed to root > password > then I wrote lspci (space) -v (space) -v....is this command correct with a space before each -v? Anyway, it came back as "bash: lspci :command not found". I still want to use the Creative Soundblaster card and not the card onboard the mb. I'm not in MDK10 right now but will be switching into it in a moment. Richard L.
  21. Thanks both of you.... 1. In the BIOS, I didn't find a way to do any changes for ACPI...nothing to "enable" or "disable". It listed something about Suspend State was ST3 or something like that. 2. Also, in the peripheral configuration, it states that AUDIO is disabled. 3. I didn't find anything called USB keyb in the BIOS (is this the USB keyboard? If so, I think I would need it enabled for WinXP-Pro and also my other Linux distros that have no problems (RH8, Libranet 2.8.1, SUSE 9.0, Xandros 2.0). 4. have lilo.conf in the same partition as my installation (hdb8 on a 2nd hard drive with 120 Gigs). I am using SUSE 9.0's GRUB to boot into all my linux distros. When I boot up, SUSE's GRUB is in the WinXP bootloader list. 5. In lilo.conf it states: acpi=ht. Does this need to be changed to something else? 6. The command lspci -v -v came back as "command not found'. 7. I notice listed below under lsmod is the es 1371 (ensonic1371?). The one on the motherboard is called the Integrated SoundMAX Audio by the manufacturer of my computer (Powerspec 8920 sold my Micro Center- a national US chain). In MCC >Hardware, Mandrake recognizes the Soundcard as "CT 5880" whatever that is. 8. The soundcard I wish to use is the Creative Soundblaster 16 pci, which is working automatically in all four of my other linux distros and WinXP-Pro. 9. Here are the results that I got using a terminal. (My username is rclmdk10): [rclmdk10@localhost rclmdk10]$ su Password: [root@localhost rclmdk10]# lspci -v -v bash: lspci: command not found [root@localhost rclmdk10]# lsmod Module Size Used by sg 38044 0 st 38616 0 sr_mod 17028 0 sd_mod 16832 0 scsi_mod 114648 4 sg,st,sr_mod,sd_mod lp 12200 0 parport_pc 32832 1 parport 38952 2 lp,parport_pc md5 3872 1 ipv6 232352 8 es1371 33280 1 soundcore 9248 2 es1371 gameport 4480 1 es1371 ac97_codec 17804 1 es1371 af_packet 20520 2 raw 7616 1 ide-floppy 18752 0 ide-tape 34864 0 ide-cd 40548 0 cdrom 37184 2 sr_mod,ide-cd floppy 59444 0 8139too 23712 0 eepro100 29740 0 mii 4992 2 8139too,eepro100 ohci1394 33956 0 ieee1394 287856 1 ohci1394 nls_cp850 4736 1 vfat 13760 1 fat 45120 1 vfat usbkbd 6912 0 nls_iso8859-1 3904 2 ntfs 85932 1 supermount 37876 2 intel-agp 17372 1 agpgart 31016 1 intel-agp joydev 10240 0 evdev 9504 0 tsdev 7168 0 usbmouse 5216 0 hid 53312 0 ehci-hcd 24196 0 uhci-hcd 29104 0 usbcore 99132 7 usbkbd,usbmouse,hid,ehci-hcd,uhci-hcd rtc 11576 0 reiserfs 246196 1 [root@localhost rclmdk10]# 10. Hope this helps at arriving at a solution. Thanks! Richard L.
  22. Thanks DragonMage, I will most likely choose the more stable Thomas Backlund kernel. I'll try to get someone at the HoustonLUG help me (we have a workshop every Wed. evening) since one of the forum moderators of this forum whom I know will be busy on a Mother's Day weekend (you know who. I hope all is well with you half a world away from me. Richard L.
  23. Thanks DragonMage, It's great to hear from you again. The reason I joined the MandrakeClub was to get the 2.6.x kernel. If I had known about the bug, I wouldn't have spent the money to join the club. (I'm jobless now and spending $132 US took a big toll out of my monthly budget). Is there not an updated kernel and kernel source that would work like you helped me with for MDK9.2? Is there the option to download the latest kernel and get it to play nice wtih both MDK10 and ACPI, or is that too complicated (I realized the included kernel has been customized by MDK fo the distro). I would hate to go back to the 2.4.x kernel as that is what I already have on MDK9.2. Anyway, you're always a big help to me and I appreciate it. Richard L.
  24. I just installed MDK10 Official PowerPak (from MandrakeClub) on the 2nd hdd of my Powerspec 8920. I have a sound card on the motherboard that I'm not using. The sound card that I'm using is the Creative Soundblaster 16pci. On the other linux distros, sound for this card was automtacally detected with no problems: SuSE9.0, Libranet 2.8.1, Xandros 2.0 and RedHat 8.0. How do I enable sound? I used MCC > Services and changed ALSA to run on bootup, but this didn't help. When I play Frozen-Bubble, there is no sound. ( I use Frozen-Bubble to test for sound when I install a distro). All replies is greatly appreciated. Richard L.
  25. I have just installed MDK10 Official on my laptop--Toshiba 5005-S507. Dragonmage helped me with it when I installed 9.2, to whom I give great thanks! 1. It appears that the Toshutils and Toshiba Extras that are in Kernel 2.6.x, along with ACPI are not working/activated. I need these in order to get sound working and to monitor battery management and other features for this laptop. 2. I was able to go into MCC >Services and enable ALSA, but it didn't do anything. When I boot up now, I get a sound server error message. 3. Also in the Services I don't have Hotplug running, should I change that to run on bootup??? 4. Additionally, when I try to run Frozen Bublle in Full Screen, it has a black bakground with just a square in the middle fhe game. The default resolution for this laptop is 1600x1200, which is the default.
