Yes, I did try the nvidia drivers from their website and also from plf, but neither helped. I was also at my LUG workshop: Houston Linux Users Group with some really bright people, and the only solution was to use the "nv" driver to even boot up.

I had an earlier thread on this issue in the first week of October under Laptops and Portables, if you wish to take a look.

I appreciate yours and the help of all the expert and knowledgeable (sp?) people of this fabulous forum.

Hi from Houston! I just read a review of Linux Mint 2.1 "Bea" which as an easy gui way of using Ndiswrapper and other ways to configure wireless. You can make a Live CD of it to see if it works for you. It is based on Ubuntu with Gnome as the default, but you can download KDE from Synaptic easily (according to the review):

I am every disappointed in that up until 2007, I was able to use 3D acceleration to play TuxRacer/PenguinRacer (or whatever it's called now) with the Nvidia Card in my Toshiba 5000 series laptops, but now I can't. I can only use the "nv" driver. Also, this means no more 3D accelerated screensavers.

The laptops would not boot at all into Mandriva when first installed until I re-installed and choose the "nv" driver.

I haven't installed it onto my Desktop yet, but I think I'll have better luck. I'll update soon on that, probably before New Year's. (As a silver club member, I have the PowerPakDVD).

A few days ago I downloaded LinuxMint and plan to burn it onto a disc this week. I'm a KDE fan, but it will replace by Libranet, so I hope to have fun with it. I liked what I read about it on Distrowatch and also from their website. It should have just about everything that MDVPowerPak has, and for free. I'll give a report later on it.

Which graphics card does your laptop have? If it is Nvidia, use the generic and see if it will then boot up. That is what I had to do with my Toshiba 5000 series, which I bought in 2002, because it uses the Geforce 440 Go which does not support 3d accleration with MDV 2007. It wouldn't boot at all until I used the generic "nv" without the 3d acceleration.

Let me know if my input solves your problem, or not.

Hi everyone,

I have installed the mplayerplugin properly using the urpmi command. It installed completely into FirefoxWindows Media Player Plugin.

The problem is that no matter the website, when I click on a video that requires Windows Media Player, it says:

mplayer plugin

Even though it says that it is playing, there is no video screen and no video playing.

I was unable to boot into Mandriva 2007 on my Toshiba 5205-S703 and was unable to do what Ian suggested.

However, I got mine to work by doing an "upgrade" to my Mandriva2007 and choosing the generic Nvidia driver ("nv"), then I was able to boot and most everything is fine. Unfortunately, I can't use 3-D acceleration for some games and screensavers like I could in Mandriva2006, and 3D desktop is not supported.

I guess I'm having a memory lapse, but I don't want to mess up my partitions and other distros when I install Mandriva 2007. I want to keep my Suse Grub on the Master Boot Record as my bootloader. Here is what I have:

hda1 (hd0,0) Ext3 101 MB (this is a mystery, but I'll just leave this here and don't want to mess with it)

hda2 (hd0,1) Linux Swap 1.01 GB

hda5 (hd0,4) Mandriva 2006 15.4 GB

hda6 (hd 0,5) Suse 9.00 GB

hda7 (hd0,6) Kubuntu 6.00 GB

hda8 (hd0,7) Mandriva 2005 6.00 GB

I want to install Mandriva 2007 on hda8, where Mandriva 2005 is now. I don't want MDV2007's bootloader on the MBR.

During installation, this is what shows when I choose "Use existing partitions":

Choose the mount points:

hda1 (101MB, /boot, ext3) /boot

hda5 (15 GB, /, reiserfs) /

hda6 (9GB, reiserfs) This field is blank

hda7 (6GB, ext3) This field is blank

hda8 (5.9 GB, reiserfs) This field is blank I want Mandriva 2007 on this partition.

How do I change these mount points so that I install Mandriva 2007 on hda8?

Hi Ian,

Good to hear from you again. On the Toshiba 5205-S703, the Nvidia card is the NV17M GeForce4 460 Go.

What is your laptop? Is it the same?

I also have a Toshiba 5005-S507 with the GeForce4 440 Go...same problem. (This is the infamous laptop that had the lawsuit for not working properly...I got $500 from the lawsuit). On this one I'll stick with "nv" since 3D acceleration graphics have never worked well with it. (It's now my "linux only" "distro slut" laptop, partitioned for about 4 distros.)

BTW, Mandriva One 2007 Live CD cannot boot on either laptop either, but does well on my desktop, so will soon be installling Mandriva PowerPak 2007 on it (a 4 year old PowerSpec 8920 from Micro Center).

I was able to get successfully complete the install by using the "nv" driver (choosing "GeForce") from the nvidia list.

This is the first time I've installed Mandriva on this laptop where I've not been able to use the full, proprietary driver.

Does anyone have some advice? I would really like full functionality so that I can use 3D acceleration.

As an early seeder, I now have Mandriva 2007 Official Power burnt to DVD.

I installed it on my laptop...Toshiba 5205-S703. I have had previous versions of Mandrake/Mandriva on this laptop with successful installs.

This time however, when I boot up (Grub Gui bootloader) and use verbose mode, all scrolls down with "[OK]"; however it then goes to a black screen with the tiny white cursor line in the upper left-hand corner, not blinking. It remains stuck there and nothing else happens.

I installed the proprietary Nvidia driver for the GeForce 440 Go (generic). When booting in verbose, it shows NVidia 8774.

I'm not very techy, so simple, step-by-step instructions would be very helpful.

I haven't had a chance to try to solve this problem in a couple of weeks, but now I'm back.

To recap:

As a club member, I used the new Kiosk to download KDE 3.5. This needed a newer version of the kernel and kernel-source ending in -22mdk to get 3D acceleration wtih my Nvidia card (see the first couple of posts at the beginning.) Then I need the nvidia-8756 for compatibility. When I did the command (in root) urpmi nvidia-xorg, it gave a a newer one: nvidia-8762, which does not work. I uninstalled them and reinstalled from MCC the nvidia-8756, but this is still incomplete.

I'm totally perplexed and confused, being a simple-minded "point & clicker" and needed very elementarty, step-by-step command lines (or using MCC) to install/uninstall things.

Here is what I did today on the command line, then afterward I uninstalled the "8762" stuff:

The second and third lines are different, and I don't know what they are. I guess the first line is the kernel. I don't see anything that looks like the kernel-source.

I'm not sure what I need to uninstall and what I need to install for the nvidia-8756, or how to install it. Step by step commands would be helpful for me.

I just went to the Mandriva Control Center and looked at software I have installed and did a search for kernel-source. It says I have the following installed:

kernel-source-2.6-2.6.12-22mdk and

kernel-source-stripped-2.6-2.6.12-22mdk.

I'm sure I don't need both.

Here are the results of the commands you asked me to use. I don't see a kernel-source mentioned, but I see two versions in the second and third lines.

I appreciate your help. (The second day I was in Amsterdam I was in Dam Square and watched the Queen lay the wreath in memory of the victims who had fallen in World War II. I was awestruck by the entire ceremony. Being Jewish and knowing the love and support the Dutch gave us made it so much more meaningful to me personally).

I went into Mandriva Control Center and looked at my packages that are already installed and found the following. Do I need to remove/uninstall any, which may be causing a conflict? Here they are:

kernel-2.6.12.12mdk-1-1mdk

kernel-2.6.12.22mdk-1-1mdk

kernel-source-stripped-2.6.12-22mdk

nvidia-kernel-2.6.12-12mdk-7676-1mdk

I'm thinking that maybe some of the duplicates need to be uninstalled, but I need expert advise on this. In addition, if you read carefully my original message it said:

"Failed to load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/nvidia/libglx.so....ERROR: API mismatch. The NVIDIA kernel module has the version 1.0-7676, but this X module has the version 1.0-8756. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version...."

This means I need the NVIDIA kernel module for version 1.0-8756, I think. I thought this got downloaded from the KIOSK with the drivers 2006, which listed both nvidia drivers in the list, but apparently I don't have 1.0-8756.

Here is my last attempt with command lines:

Ian, here is what I got from the commands you gave me:

I'm not sure how to intrepret all this, but it seems like the kernel doesn't match by looking at the kdms, and the dkms-nvidia is not the correct one after the upgrade. Also, I don't know why I'm getting ls:usr/src: No such file or directory. What are the next steps I need to take?

As a siIver member of the Mandriva Club,I recently used the Mandrake Club's Kiosk to upgrade KDE from 3.4 to 3.5.

I am now only successfully able to use the NVIDIA FX 5200 generic, since I can't get into XOrg, or level 5/graphical using the NVIDIA driver.

Here is part of my error message if I try to use the full NVIDIA drive with 3D:

"Failed to load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/nvidia/libglx.so....ERROR: API mismatch. The NVIDIA kernel module has the version 1.0-7676, but this X module has the version 1.0-8756. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version...."

I then went back to the Kiosk and downloaded drivers for Mandriva 2006, which included both the NVIDIA 1.0-7676 and the version 1.0-8756, along with other drivers. I thought that this would get rid of the conflict, but it didn't.

I'm a very dependent "Point and Click" type of guy, so if I need to edit the XF86config file, please help me out with clear, step-by-step/easy to read and intrepret directions for a "non-geek". Will I need to install the NVIDIA version 1.0-8756 from either the NVIDIA website or by plf?
