  1. unless you know the settings in your home dir are the problem, it's good to keep them. if you re-install and the problem persists, then try manually removing the files containing settings for the program that is causing the issues.

usually it's pretty obvious, as they are something like .<name or program> and the like.

  2. i installed synaptic from the texstar rpms, but everytime i start it i get an error box with the following message:

could not open RPM package list file /var/state/apt/lists/ftp.ibiblio.org_pub_Linux_distributions_contrib_texstar_apt_Mandrake_base_pkglis
    t.updates: (no error)

The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

when i click OK (the only option) synaptic exits immediately. the following is the output in my terminal which i run it from:

Any ideas where the problem may lie and how to fix it? thanks for any input. I'm going to work on this a little and if i figure it out i'll post the fix here, in case others run into this issue.

  3. i believe the other two should pickup that lilo is already installed, and make use of it by adding themselves to the menu. but, to be safe, make a bootdisk for accessing your mandrake system BEFORE installing the others.

also: test the disk after you make it, before you install the others :) just to be safe.

then, if they end up not just editing the lilo already installed, you can get back into mandrake by way of the bootdisk, and happily configure lilo in whatever way you choose, be it mandrake cc or by way of a terminal.

  4. i haven't gotten back to it just yet. i'll work w/it and see if i can find an answer.

i think i might have found an answer to MY problem. it seems that my cdroms and so forth are only running at DMA 33. now to figure out how to fix this :)

  5. i decided to upgrade to KDE and give it a second chance...although waimea is great, i like variety from time to time.

but, when i started KDE 3.1, i get the following error:

    startkde: Starting up...

mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding

DCOP aborting (delayed) call from 'anonymous-16388' to 'kdesktop'

    ERROR: KUniqueApplication: DCOP communication error!

    *** kdesktop (16389) got signal 11

i already took care of the /tmp/.ICE-unix issue, but this appears to be a different one, and i haven't found any answers...

    any ideas?

  6. did you try accessing the files directly?

i get the feeling that apache doesn't like giving directory listings, you have to request specific files. and if you just type in http://localhost it's going to immediately look for index.html or index.shtml, if it doesn't find that, i believe it gives up and tries to get a directory listing. which apache doesn't seem to want to do......

  7. I'm thinking it might be a bit of an undertaking to change it all over to gcc 3.2.2, but that depends on how big of a difference there is. I remember the last gcc upgrade was an issue for many programs, they wouldn't compile correctly or at all.

  8. Its an internal modem I have seen nothing on the drivers disk that says Winmodem. The modem works fine in Windows./quote]

it's a winmodem...bad' date=' bad stuff. i'd explain to you why, but i'd probably bore you to death :)

exactly what model is it? there may be help...check here: http://linmodems.org/

  9. made my first style for waimea: http://www.tymecc.net/oddityscreenshot.png

(the bg may look fimiliar, it's the larger image of what i use for my avatar. i made it :) )

i'm not sure if the font is showing up right. i have it set to arial, but what i really want is the default font, which i think is what's showing up. fonts are the part i had a bit of trouble with.

and i'm going to make another one based on this image of mine:
