  1. fonts have been a problem w/linux for a while.

    check out this post: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=2126

it contains a lot of stuff about software for linux, but there is a link for an RPM which will get you the core microsoft fonts.

personally, i get all the fontconfig, freetype2, and Xft packages from this link:

    http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distribut...e/RPMS.texstar/

and install them. for the freetype2 ones you have to do an update (-U option on the command line). add to that the ms fonts i mentioned earlier and i rarely have any ugly fonts.

  2. well, exactly what do you mean "the font problem"?

a kernel update won't help your fonts. if you look around, do a search or example (try "font problems", "bad fonts", and the like) you should find a good bit of info as fonts have quite a few topics.

i have a post in the "Everything Linux" forum concerning the Xft and Fontconfig files that were missing from texstar, they make fonts appear a lot nicer.

  3. open a terminal, do:

ps -fu username | grep mozilla

to check for any rogue mozilla processes running. then kill them with:

    kill pid

where pid is the number in the second column in from the left (first column would be your user name).

  4. well, i'm in the middle of building a completely gentoo system, but i had issues w/my SiS900 on-board NIC. so i stuck in the 3com card i had laying around, but at my school you have to register your MAC address to get internet access, so i'm currnetly waiting for them to change the address i have registered. 2 business days, they say. and with all this snow we just got (in PA), it might take a bit longer :-(

  5. I'd think a decently simple way would be to write a quick little script, and either stick it on the desktop or put it somewhere else and then stick a link to it on the desktop.

i couldn't figure out a way to make it work right just now, but maybe aru can jump in and do some of his famous bash scripting?

(edit:no, i didn't notice that aru had already posted :-/)

  6. I was considering putting up a mostly linux webpage at my address (tymecc.net), and am looking for input as to what sort of linux sites are rare, that would be of great help? and if anyone is interested in contributing, please let me know. thanks!

i'm also going to attempt to work on a few small programs, such as an ncurses livejournal client (i use livejournal, but for some strange reason none of the current clients compile correctly on my system-plus i like ncurses stuff [like naim]).

  7. tyme.

There seems to be a problem wih sed (which is needed by mirrorselect)

So I skipped the mirror select, and I'm bootstrapping now ... I'll let you all know how it goes

    cool, thanks!

it takes or f'in' ever, i swear :) did you do stage 1? i skipped to stage 2 since i'm using the AMD XP liveCD

  8. i believe the reason you will find more activity in the gentoo forums is because of the type of distro that is. where as mandrake is a more easy to use disto, it doesn't have as many active "knowledgeable" users as a distro that takes a bit of knowledge just to set up (i just spent the last couple hours attempting a gentoo install-ran into a problem and just didn't feel like finishing it up right now-my /etc/make.conf file got skewed when i attempted to use mirrorselect).

i think thats why you find less activity on this board. but there is a solid base of people who are constantly here and doing what they can, so let's not forget about them :)
