  1. Hi I have just got a dhcp server going which is the gateway to the internet. Now I may sound pretty stupid with this next question, but it is late at night here, and newbieness is starting to manifest! When I go to check my email through evolution on one of the networked computers, it says that it can't fetch it. The server is using squid proxy and shorewall firewall. I know that shorewall is set up OK as I've been there done that. But I know little about squid. Do I have to now set up a mail daemon on the server to fetch the mail from my provider and then send it to each computer on the network depending on the email address??? If that is so, what program should I be looking at?? And urpmi can't make contact either! Do I have to make some ports open or something, and if so which ones?? This is confusing, frustrating but a lot of fun at the same time. Thanks for any help!!
  2. Curiousity killed the cat. I just wish that there were more curious cats!! Well,I have an upmarketsoundcard thathas a different input plug. Would'nt you know it? And yes I could buy one but I could'nt bother getting in the car and shopping around.
  3. Thanks for your help BVC. I have read that, but I don't really understand it that well. I checked the kernel config which is where that answer leads to, and everything seemed OK. I am actuall going to be setting up a server today anyway and I'll connect through that and run the 2.6 kernel through this box and connect to the net through the network so it won't be a problem. So, now I am going to try and work out how to set up a server but I will return to this convo later on. Today hopefully!!
  4. Hi again, Well, I almost got there but it would always fail at the same point! kuchwas, I did as you said and put the name of the driver in that file and it was found on startup BUT it just kept coming up with....... "inappropriate ioctl for device" I tried my usb camera which worked perfectly, it was just this darn modem. Any more ideas???? Thanks and still praying!
  5. Guys can you help????????? I got 2.6 installed following all your advice. thanks to everyone!! BUT I have an external usb adsl modem. A Dlink dsl200. It uses an eciadsl driver. The trouble is 2.6 can't find the modem. I followed your instructions to get the mouse to work, can anyone direct me in any way what may get the usb modem identified??? USB itself seems to work, but it's just the modem isn't found. Thanks
  6. This not a great problem but one that irks me a bit and I'm sure that someone out there knows a way around it! I cannot play CD's digitally as in M$oft. I hav'nt hooked up a CD to a soundcard for years because of that feature but I cannot find a way to do it in Mandrake 9.2. Does anyone know how to make it happen?? Thanks for your brains!
  7. Kuchwas, I have tried nearly all day for an urpmi site which has the new kernel. I have got a big fat ZERO. I can find it on ftp but that's all. Can you direct me please to what to type in to update my urpmi??
  8. Kuchwas, I'll try and find a mirror from plf that has one where I can upgrade my urpmi.
  9. Can you tell me this??? I can't install the 2.6 kernel because it says it needs "Udev" I can't install Udev because it says that I have the wrong kernel version installed!!!! How can I break this circle??
  10. Hey thanks a lot guys! I have given that vgrabbj a go and it is exactly what I want!!! Thanks heaps.
  11. Yea I finally found it but gees, it's not that straight forward is it??? Thanks kuchwas. I'll give it a go and report back.
  12. Call me dumb, but I cannot find it on any mirror site. Can someone give me a link please??
  13. I am wondering if anyone can tell me where I can get webcam software?? It's not for anything naughty! I want to set up a surveilance camera on my dog to find out where/how he is getting out of the yard. I want to watch it via Gkrellkam. I have tried Gnomemeeting but I cannot get it compiled. I just keep going round and round in circles because it needs all these files that either are installed or cannot be found. Thanks in advance
  14. kuchwas Can you tell me where to get that kernel??? I can't locate it anywhere.
  15. Where is the discussion happening kuchwas?? It will be way over my head too, but I'd like to see how short I actually am!!

    Cron

Please ignore this, as I've just worked it out!!!!
  17. Ah I just read kuchwas' post! So I'll just have to wait for the people with the brains to get it happening then A?? It does seem so much faster though. Anyone else find that??

    Cron

Hi again, I would like to update my urpmi database daily via cron or is it crond? Can anyone tell me how please?? Peppercorn
  19. Well, I am impressed with myself!!!! Only luck I guess. Well, I have an Albatron MB with Nforce2 chipset AMD 2600XP processor and 512 ddr ram. An Nvidia 64 meg GEforce AGP card. Everything worked except the USB and the monitor on startup. So, when you get the boot screen Hit Esc Type in the name of the kernel you want to boot from. For example, call it 2.6.test. Type in 2.6.test vga=0 and you'll see everything as normal. I had to disable my Nvidia 3d driver in XF86Config-4 But after that, it all worked normal, except for the USB, and the eth0 which I got going by going through the wizard. I am running 9.2 Now, back to the original question, any ideas how I would go about getting the USB loaded?? It gives me the error "EZUSB USB ADSL LOADER" not found or not loaded something like that!

    2.6 Kernel

Hi guys & gals As most of you have probably figured out I am quite a newbie, but I am getting there! I installed and ran the 2.6 kernel just as a test for myself the other day, and after some tweaks with the nvidia driver I got it all up and running. It was SO MUCH FASTER than the 2.4 kernel!!! Or did I just imagine it??? What I would like to know is how would I get my usb module working in 2.6?? Because it didn't find it or load it on start up. Can anyone give me some clues as to where I should start?? I know that 2.6 is still under development, but on my computer it worked fine excepting usb. Anyone????
  21. Doesn't anyone know anything about these files???? There must be a way of converting them other than going back to M$oft..
  22. I am no professor at this but what I would do is either uninstall what you installed which led to this problem OR I would upgrade my urpmi database to 9.2 and then try. Obviously, the version of Drakconf that you are trying to install is too old a version. So, try and get a 9.2 version. Does that make any sense??

    nuv files

I have installed Mythtv and unbelievably all is going well! But, I want to be able to convert the .nuv files that Mythtv produces to avi files. mpeg2 files is OK also, but if I can get them to avi I can do more with them. What program is there that will covert them?? Any?? Thanks Peppercorn
  24. Well, thanks for all that. I will need to digest all that so I don't stuff up. I do have one more question though. Do I set up a domain or just a workgroup?? Thanks in advance Peppercorn
  25. Thanks for all your advice. Question 1~~ If I installed X for all the setting up, how do I then make it boot up to init 3 automatically??? Question 2~~ Do I set the server up with a proxy for the internal network??? If so, what would that setting be?? Question 3~~ Should the network computers be running dhcp and the server have a static IP??? That'll do for now. Thanks for the help!!!
