  1. Hi all,

I have just successfully backed up my entire system using the Drak backup facility in Mandrake 10. This is the first time that I have got it to work actually.

Anyway, I now have a few files that amount to 10.9 gig on my hard drive.

Is there a way of spreading these files out over numerous DVD's or CD's so that somewhere into the future I could reinstall my system if needed??? You know starting with DVD 1 through to DVD 3 ????

Thanks for any sharing of brain power!

  2. Ah I have a problem!!

I did everything that you posted and all seemed to go well until, I reinstalled the lilo boot manager, which also went smoothly. But on boot up I get this error.

Starting Partmon: Checking if partitions have enough diskspace:

Warning, freespace for </> is only <0> (which is inferior to <20000>

But that is the only fault and if I log in at the prompt and check everything, it all seems to be OK. All the Linux folders are there, including the home directory. Like I hav'nt installed Windows on the wrong partition or anything stupid like that.

    Can you HELP please????

  3. I am fixing a friends computer which has XP installed on one partition and Mandrake 9.2 installed on another. The boot manager is controlled by lilo obviously within Mandrake.

But what I have to do is reinstall XP because of too many virii and spy progs which has stuffed it completely, and I don't know how to install XP without it taking over the boot manager????

    Thanks for anyone's help!

  4. Hi,

As the topic suggests I can't update anything via urpmi OR Mandrake control centre.

It seems to download the files necessary but then gives the error

"....retrieving failed: curl failed: exited with a 9 or a signal 0"

Can anyone help please as this is getting very frustrating,

I am running Mandrake Community with the 2.6 kernel.

    Thanks in advanx!!

  5. Hey Thanks for all your replies and assistance.

I think I'll have a go with the setup suggested by Artee at this stage, and see how I go.

Artee, can I ask. Why do you need the vncserver?? Do you operate the vnc server from the client which has the vnc2swf running on it ????

    Is that right???

    Thanks and awaiting your reply.

  6. G'Day,

I'd like to make a CD presentation for Windows users, selling the benefits of shifting to Linux/Mandrake.

I would like it to be a little bit like an instructional video, that shows the Mandrake desktop, how you would open a document in Open Office, and how to save it etc etc. All the time with an audio over the top explaining what it is that I'm doing.

I would like it to show how easy it is to do some tasks, like emailing, and even web surfing.

Is there a program out there that will record (I think that it is called WYSIWYG) program???????

Then IF I can record all these exercises, I would like to master the CD to be able to play on Windows Computers. Is it possible?

So, "Am I Dreamin? or what????

    Thanks for any help.

  7. Thanks for all your very good advice!!

I have arrived at the same decision after much thinking and reading.

1 Find out what he wants!

2 Can it connect to an accounting program and a POS cash register?

3 Explain to him the enormity of the exercise.

Thanks again, I meet with him on MOnday, so I will get the answers to some of those questions at least.

    Cheers,

  8. I have a friend who has just offered me a position that could earn me quite a decent living for a few months, which is a miracle around here where I live.

I know computers back the front as far as building and identifying problems with them and therefore fixing them, but I am far from a software expert.

He has offered me the job because he trusts me basically.

He has bought a bakery and wants me to advise him on a software program that he will be able to use as a running sheet. How many buns were made, how many sold, how many left over, etc etc. He wants to be able to record any practice or inventory that he wants to.

I figured that all this could be achieved on a spreadsheet type program or mysql?????? Of which I know NOTHING about!!!

Firstly, am I right about mysql or a spreadsheet being the right type of program to use??

If so, which one would better suit the job?

If not, does anyone know of a Linux App which would be able to do that type of job??

Thanks for any insight on this topic

  9. Devries is on the money.

There is nothing that works very well. I hav'nt tried kdenlive but the best that I have tried to use is Main Actor, but that has bugs too.

I for one would be interested to know if you find any decent prog. Keep us in touch.

  10. Hi all,

I am using Opera and Mandrake 9.2. I was wondering if someone can tell me how to listen to streaming audio (Microsoft formats mainly) rather than having to download it which is all the choice that I get at the moment..

    Thanks for any direction

  11. Hey guys ,

If I install the 2.6 kernel again and then the Nvidia 3d driver, will that driver work with the 2.4 kernel if I decide to boot up into that or will I have to go through the whole uninstall reinstall process everytime????

Thanks for any knowledge on this one.

  12. Thanks scoopy,

Seems like I'm not alone after all.. The thing is that I know a friend of the producer of an up and coming "Shrek" type movie and they are using Linux programs exclusively, based on Red Hat. So, surely the progs must be out there "somewhere"

Something like the truth being out there too!!??

  13. :wall::wall::wall::wall:

I am trying to capture video from TV onto my HD via a bttv capture card into a format which gives me decent quality to convert to dvds or svcds. So far my efforts have left me aimless to say the least.

In windows, you have .avi files which you work with. What are the linux standards ????

Then, I am making home movies, with the same basic setup. So I need a movie editing program. I have tried Cinelerra which just seems designed to just "hang" when you ask it to do something. Main Actor 5 won't import the video format which I have been capturing to which I think has been either avi or mpeg. I actually forget to tell the truth.

I am running an up to date, stable version of Mandrake 9.2 Amd 2600xp 128nvidia agp and 512 ddr ram.

Can anyone show me a website that can lead me through this maze of capturing and editing video (with quality) on linux??????????

Or if you are generous enough take me by the hand and give me some ideas?? I have plenty of time in front of the computer because I am an invalid. I am capable of learning and understanding. But over the last 3 months, the truth is I have got NOWHERE on this subject. :wall::wall::wall::wall:

    Thanks for any help!

  14. Yea I'm afraid that I'm with Big John on this one. I gave it 8 hours and it downloaded 101 meg and uploaded 181megs!!!

That's on a 512/128 adsl connection. I think that it sucks big time. I should be able to download a CDs worth in about 4-6 hours conservatively.

I might give Gentoo a go too Hummph

  15. Hi I am hoping (of course) that someone may be able to help me please.

I am trying to compile "video4linuxgrab" video capture program and I keep getting this error

    "video4linux2 interface not found!"

I am using a 2.4-22.21-mm.2 kernel compiled by Obiwan

and have a bttv type capture card.

I use Obiwans kernel because his kernel acknowledges my Kodak DC290 Dig camera.

I am running an up to date version of 9.2 and I am pretty stumped. Can anyone direct me in any direction please??
