  1. Here's yet another one. Go to APPLICATIONS-->MONITORING and start KDE System Guard. Look on the process table and select the process that you want to kill and click kill.
  2. As many of you are aware by now, from reading my posts, I am definitly a Linux newbie. One of the biggest problems that I have been having, and I am sure many other newbies have had or are having, is installing applications. I have learned how to run configure/make/make install but sometimes what I am doing fails for some reason. Seeing as I do not understand everything that the error message states, I end up getting frustrated and not able to install the app. I have seen references to the command URPMI before but never really understood what it was or does. Fortunately I have seen the light. So what is it? Well, the first line of the MAN page states: . I have found this to be true. I have been trying unsuccessfully to get my laptop to play DVD's. I have posted to this forum about it and received many replies on how to get it working. Unfortunately, I keep getting errors stating that I do not have this, or I need that. It is enough to drive many new Linux users back to Uncle Bill . Last night, after learning what URPMI is and how it works (www.urpmi.org), I was able to install the necessary packages with no problems. Using the online Easyurpmi tool (http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php), I was able to update my sources of packages. Then I just went to a shell, grabbed root, and typed . I have used this tool to install many applications laast night and have not had any problems with dependencies. I thought that this may be useful to many of you other newbies out there who are having the same types of issues, but are just to embarrased to ask. I have always gone on the premise that If you don't know and you want to, ask in this forum. The posters here are great. They remember that they were once new to Linux too. PS. If anyone would like to add to my explanations, please do so. I haven't had enough coffee yet tis morning so I may have started to ramble a bit.

    Help

Actually went pretty well. I had found a CLI Administrators primer and was able to memorize the commands that I needed to utilize. The server is running Red Hat 7.1 with the 2.4.2-2 Kernel. I can see that everything needs updating and that there is a lot of room for improvement. The method in which the old admin had been backing up the server is troubling to me. The server is setup in a RAID configuration. To backup, they break the RAID array and insert a different HDD. Then they recreate the array. The really scary thing about this, is that the old admin actually only comes in once a month, so he taught a non-tech to perform this function. Wait, it gets better. The non-tech does this using the ROOT account. The other thing that bothers me, actually a lot does but I am talking this time, is that the non-techs are having to run e2fsck at least twice a month after performing the backup. The network and workstations are a whole nightmare on their own, but I can deal with that. I would love to install a brand new server in their and set it up as a terminal server and have all of the workstations run as terminals. (http://www.k12ltsp.org/). Anyone have any thoughts or experiences with this? Talk to you soon.

    Help

Good morning all, I was just informed by my boss that I am going to be performing an audit on a linux server in two hours. As I have been attempting to learn linux, this makes me an "Expert" (mainly cause I know what linux is). Obviously I do not feel I am ready for this, but he pays the bills. I need to know a cli commands to pull be able to display hardware info (memory, harddrives, NIC), services running and versions (ie. samba 2.0.1) and whatever else you would think I need. I am not totally ignorant on linux, however I am new to servers without a GUI (I know, I know, I'm learning!). Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.
  5. Sorry for the mis-communication. I meant the one in the terminal window. I am going to install and look at the other though.
  6. Looking at your desktop picture and it shows your system stats. As a newbie, I would love to know how you did that. Please let me know when you get a chance. Thanks.
  7. Makes sense. I will try it tonite and reply tomorrow. Thanks for the quick response.
  8. Thanks Chris z You are a genius. Right clicking gave me the option I needed. I have to say, thank God I changed to linux from Windoze. Technical assistance from forums like this are amazing. Technical assistance from M$ people have traditionally been terrible. The best part of the assistance from these forums, for the most part, is that the people on here take the time to assist a "newbie" and not make them feel stupid. For all of you people that have helped a "newbie" like me, , you guys and gals ROCK!!
  9. Hey all, I am trying to install VMware Workstation and it is now asking me for the "location of the C header files that match your running Kernel". It gives the default option of /usr/src/linux/include, which does not exist. Anyone else know?
  10. Thanks for the translation. I looked all through there and was unable to find anything that looked correct. Learned a bunch of new things, but not what I needed. I am on MDK 9.2. Should I look anywhere else? Thanks again Chris z
  11. KCC? Sorry, but am still learning Linux. Don't see anything else that looks like you have mentioned. I appreciate the response.
  12. Hey all, Started up my laptop this morning and started using Konqueror. Found that the Main tool bar (File, Edit, View, etc) has disappeared. Everything else is there but not that. I do actually need to use this. Any ideas how to get it back? I have already right clicked on the tool bars and told it to show them, but the one I need is not an option. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  13. To give you a little more information, the version number is 3.1. It is installed on Mandrake 9.2. The error I am getting now is a segmatation point error or a floating point error. Any takers?
  14. Hey all, In the latest Linux Format magazine from the UK, the DVD version contained the full release of OMNIS Studio 3 (http://www.omnis.net/products/studio/index.html). I performed the install as the directions state. I go to run the application and I recieve the error message: omnis: error while loading shared libraries: omnisxi.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. Has anyone else installed this app, and if so, have you been able to make it work? I am fairly new to Linux, so please be gentle
  15. That did it. Thanks. I will now go crawl under a rock in shame
  16. Good afternoon, I apologize if this seems trivial, but it is really annoying me. I am using Mandrake 9.2, and use Konqueror to browse my files. I must have mistakenly changes something, because now if I click on a folder with a web page in it, I get the page displayed instead of a list of the files in the directory. Does anyone know how to change this "feature" off? Thanks in advanced.
  17. Still have not been able to get this resolved. If anyone has any thoughts, please let me know. Thanks.
  18. Hey folks, I am a new user of Linux, moving over from Windoze! I need to be able to create VPN connections into my office as well as my clients servers. All VPN servers in question are Windoze 2000 Server. My question is a) How would I set this up. B) What would I need to have installed (dependencies). I thank all responders in advance. Links to VPN documentation would also be helpful. Thanks.
  19. Thanks a lot. That got it working for me.
  20. I am currently running Mandrake 9.2 and have a couple of different network profiles. One is DHCP which works perfectly, and one is static. It does work the way in which I have it configured, however, I need to add multiple DNS entries for this profile. I have been using the DRAKCONNECT app to configure all of this. Does anyone know where/how I would add more DNS servers to my network configurations? Thanks in advance.
  21. BVC, Thanks for the info. Do you, or anyone else reading this, know of a good place to learn about installing software on Linux? I have been spoiled by Windows installers where everything that is needed is included in the executable. I am trying to learn, and as such I am using only Linux to perform my daily duties, but I have a long ways to go.
  22. Hey guys/gals, Once again, this newbie needs a bit of assistance. I am trying to install QtFprot which is a front end to F-Prot antivirus, and while running the ./configure, I get the error message : Checking for X... configure: error: Can't find X includes. Please check your installation and add the correct paths! I am running Mandrake 9.2. Not sure on what this means or what is needed to be installed. Any assistance would be great.
  23. Thanks so much. It is much nicer working in Linux than it was in Windows. I am going to disable the ACPI services. I am trying to learn linux as much as I can while still working as a Windows consultant. As soon as I am up to speed on linux, I will get all my clients switched over as well.
  24. Laptop is a Presario 2100 I installed the ACPI and ACPID. I do not know if the bootloader config was modified. Do not know about APMD.
  25. Good afternoon folks. I am a complete newbie to linux and I believe I have done something wrong. I am running 9.2 on my laptop and noticed that I did not have any of the power management services installed and running. Therefore, I installed the APCI modules and rebooted. Now my system will not boot. Does anyone know of a way for me to fix this, short of re-installation? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
