  1. I have been using Imation CDR media with my LG 52X burner and have yet to burn a bad disc. One vote for Imation. :)
  2. /etc/modprobe.conf already had the "alias char-major-195* nvidia" line but adding "nvidia" to the /etc/modprobe.preload did the trick! Thanks!
  3. This was trouble with Mandrake 10.1 and nVidia drivers, but it may help in your case as well... http://ariejan.net/content/view/85/32/ Also, after installing the drivers on 10.0 Official (before trying my hand at 10.1 CE) to get the drivers running after install, I had to do a second ldconfig, and it worked after that... 10.1 CE is another problem however... I was able to compile the drivers, but for some reason I can't get them to run. (being somewhat new to Linux Administration myself, I am probably overlooking something simple...) After configuring xorg.conf and making sure Load "glx" is there, and changing the driver to "nvidia" when trying to start Xwindows it says "screen found but unable to configure" or similar remark. If I do a modprobe nvidia it will work, but only until reboot. Then it is back to a command prompt. Hopefully this will help you... And maybe someone will see this and be able to offer me some help as well... Good luck!
  4. I find with the nVidia drivers, after an install and editing the configuration files, all you need to do is an "ldconfig" once more and it seems to clear things up and the driver seems to work. If Xorg follows the same pathing, you *should* find the xorg.conf files to edit under /etc/X11 **UPDATE** Just installed Mandrake 10.1 (up from 10.0 Official) and I seem to be having issues getting Xwindows to start up. I got the nVidia drives installed okay, but during install there was a note about the drivers possibly not working correctly because there was already a module installed. Once compiled and after editing the xorg.conf to set the driver to "nvidia" and to enable the "glx" xwiindows fails and gives an error about screens found but none usable? I have commented out the "nvidia" driver and went back to using "nv" so I could log in and post this message. Is there something that I may have missed? The procedures I have used prior to this (in Mandrake 9.2 and 10.0) worked fine, but do not work in 10.1. I am assuming that it is because of xorg instead of xfree being used. Anyone know of a fix that I have overlooked?
  5. Greetings all... I am currently running Mandrake 10.0 Official and have a sound card question. The machine I am using is dual-booting WindowsXP and Mandrake 10. The sound card I have in the box is a SoundBlaster Live! Value edition. Sound works flawlessly under Windows, and works pretty well under Linux. However, it seems that at defaults, even though I get sound from all speakers (Cambridge Soundworks 4.1 Surround) in Linux, the sound is a bit "tinny" sounding. If I try and adjust the bass even a hair the front speakers start "farting" and making a terrible noise. If I put the bass back to default everything sounds okay other than the lack of any bass response. Even if I try lowering volume (currently at about 74%) it makes no difference, as soon as I adjust bass the front speakers start "farting" again. The rear speakers sound fine though. If I turn off the front speakers and leave only the rear and the sub everything sounds great. My main question is to wether there is a fix or solution to being able to adjust bass *and* keep the front speakers, or should I try a different sound card. In my spare parts bin I have an old SoundBlaster 128, and a Hercules GameTheatre XP. I had the GTXP in the box originally, but at the time, there really was not very good support for the card under Linux so I pulled it in favor of the SBLive. Would I have better luck with one of the other sound cards, or should I just deal with "tinny" sound and keep the SBLive? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
