looks like your not connecting to a dhcp server try setting a ip in for your card and see if that works could be just a bad cable.

put shorewall on it can redirect and you can easily setting your blocking and make the rest your network secure

Install 9.2MDK make sure iptables is on

I would add squid to the server as it will speed up pages that are constantly being used.

Adding smoothwall will also make it quicker then the standard firewall package and more secure

Smoothwall site has a setup configs right on there site for a 2 card system and good writeups

You should use a 3 card if you run a web server or ftp server at the site

Up and running in about 1- 2 hours

I have squid, shorewall and content filtering running on 23 servers at various locations never had a problem.

have you checked your local network range in your acl in squid

have you checked to see if you are turning on logging maybe the log file is full.

also clearing the cache does always clear the dns cache.

Also could be a shorewall problem with the port 3128 then appears to be squid but its shorewall

to add Squid

install squid package or download the squid tar from Squids site and install. It sets its self up to default from the install after that you can tune it. Webmin works great for tuning Squid.

shorewall only handle traffic incoming that you wish to send to a port that you can spec is what I get from my reading or did I read wrong :unsure:

I have been researching this for about 2 weeks

Current firewall setup used is Mandrake 8.2,transparent content filter (Dansguardian), squid and Shorewall at 12 schools on Idsn connections (it runs Great)

I have it running on IdSN conections but I have 12 satelite locations where I need to setup my firewall to connect to the satellite reciever

This will be done with a crossover to port 9377 at a given ip 10.10.10.10.

I can't get reliable connection because I don't know how to assign the ip:port as the gateway or route or ???

Squid I know doesn't handle any port forwarding, Shorewall doesn't handle outgoing ports so HELP

Any suggestions sure would be appreciated

an internal network of 10.196.64.0 and external to the ip assign by the Sat company

I have this running at ISDN conections (runs great)

but I have 12 satelite locations (some 2 way and other just downlinks modem up) where I need to setup my firewall computer to connect to the satellite reciever (a Windows box) via crossover to port 9302 or port 85 at a given ip lets say 192.168.0.254

Squid doesn't handle port forwarding, shorewall can only handle incoming ports

Any suggestions on how to do have my traffic all go out thru this port

I just went thru all of that in the last 24 hrs, except the printer config.

Seems like a pretty straighforward install process, so far.

I went back to my XP partition to get my modem settings. Do I need 8bits, 1 stop bit

and 1(or0) parity? LOL

Been a while since I messed with hardware setups, as you can tell.

I read that Mozilla is in the KDE package. Maybe I'll try to get that set up, since I

use Firebird on the XP partition.

Got the latest distro from LinuxCentral yesterday, along with "Linux in a Nutshell".

Already had Ext2 and WORKSPACE partitions created with PartitionMagic 8.0, when

the machine was brand new from Gateway (M305XL). First install went smooth

except that I opted to make WinXP Pro my default OS, and the MBR on the Windows

side was not updated. So I had 9.2 installed but no way to access it, except for

the boot/install disc. I used the Recover mode to delete all the directories/files

with rm -d -f and reinstalled this morning, making sure to make Linux my default

OS. Voila!

On reboot the bootloader brought up a nice screen with Linux at the top and Windows

at the bottom, for me to select the OS I want at the moment.

I loaded about 2GB of MDK 9.2 stuff, so I started setting up. Looked at KDE and

Gnome (opted for Gnome), and decided to set up an internet connection.

That's where the problems started. It appears that the modem is detected but is

classified as an Unknown, although it's ID'd correctly as an Intel model. The same

is true for my Sony USB2 floppy drive(when I tried to make a recovery disk).

For now it seems that tweaking the hardware setups, and perhaps getting the

right drivers for the modem and USB floppy are in order. I'll worry about getting a

printer setup later. I still use my old desktop for printing, even on the Win XP Pro

side of this laptop.(it's only a few weeks old)

Any suggestions for getting the modem and USB2 floppy recognized?
