I got 2008.1 RC2 and ran it from CD in order to do some tests. I was able to make two WiFi cards work in unencrypted mode, and also WEP, but WPA and WAP2 modes do not work on 2008.1 RC2, at least not running from CD. The two cards I used are Orinoco Gold and Airlink AWLC3025. I have been reading past posts and I see where someone running 2007 was able to use WPA, but so far no one has actually come out and said "yes, I'm using 2008 with WPA". So after many hours spent I am going to make the pronouncement that WPA and WPA2 do not work in 2008.0 and 2008.1. Hopefully someone will prove me wrong about that!

Greg2, Thanks for researching that issue. I will install 2008.1 as soon as I can be sure of getting the final release. When I booted 2008.1 RC1 from CD I noticed the wireless setup menu offers WPA2, a choice not found in 2008.0, so I'm hoping 2008.1 will bring some WiFi benefits. I had forgotten about dmesg, but then used it to get some details enabling me to install an ACX111-based wireless network card. This card needed a firmware file, tiacx111c16, placed in /lib/firmware/ so it can be loaded each time the computer boots, or maybe it's each time the card is powered up. I got the ACX111-based card working, but not for WPA or WPA2.

I have an Orinoco Gold WiFi card that I would like to use in WPA mode. This card was originally made for WEP with 128 bit encryption. Like many older WEP cards it is now supported for use with WPA (but not WPA2). I began by configuring the card with MLCC / Network & Internet / Set up a new network interface (LAN, ISDN, ADSL, ...) The settings I used were; Operating Mode = Managed, "WPA Pre-Shared Key" and I entered my 8 digit ASCII pre-shared key (which works with the Orinoco card in Windows, and for my Nokia N800). When no connection was made I went back to MLCC / 'Network Center'. There I could see eth1, "Lucent Technologies WaveLAN/IEEE Version 01.01", and the spot to the left is red, not green, indicating no connection. Furthermore when I click "Configure" I see that it is set to "Open WEP", not "WPA Pre-Shared Key". So then I had a look at the tail end of wpa_supplicant.conf, here is what I found. What is MCC? I also tried adding knetworkmanager via the "Install & Remove Software" GUI tool. It did not work there either, but it was Version: 0.2-1mdv2008.0. The error messaage says "Sorry, the following package cannot be selected", no reason was given. I use the command line because I like to save all the downloaded rmps for another computer, and do not know how to do that from the GUI tool. I think the GUI tool deletes the rpms after they have been installed. When was 2008.1 released? I have not found it anywhere yet.

I have no idea where that networkmanager-0.6.4-5mdv2007.1.i586 is coming from. I am doing urpmi.removemedia -a then adding all my sources again.

I tried that, here is what happened. [root@evo etc]# urpmi --auto --noclean libiw29 Package libiw29-29-0.pre22.1mdv2008.0.i586 is already installed

I tried to install knetworkmanager, but got the following message. [root@evo user]# urpmi --auto --noclean knetworkmanager A requested package cannot be installed: networkmanager-0.6.4-5mdv2007.1.i586 (due to unsatisfied libiw.so.28) Anyone else unable to install knetworkmanager?

After removing any secret details, could you send me the tail end of your wpa_supplicant.conf file showing a working configuration?

I assume you mean use the "Mandriva Linux Control Center" and go to "Network and Internet", "Network Center", then select my WiFi connection which is eth1 and hit the Configure button. So I tried that and still no luck. By the way, in addition to eth0 (the wired connection) I have eth1 which is "Lucent Technologies WaveLAN/IEEE Version 1.01", and eth1:9 also shown in "Network Center". Can I look somewhere on the disk for the underlying configuration file, just to see what got written in there? This Orinoco WiFi card is being very Linux-unfriendly. Hi epretorious, Can your Orinoco card do WPA encyption in Linux? I have an Orinoco Gold card but can't seem to get a WPA connection in Mandriva Linux even though WPA works in Windows after I got the latest driver.

I have the popular Orinoco Gold card, also known as Lucent/Agere or WaveLAN/IEEE. I can't seems to make it do WPA in Linux, although WPA in Windows is working. When I am in Mandriva Linux Control Center setting up the WiFi network interface, I select "WPA Pre-Shared Key" and settings seem to be accepted but later I go back and it's changed itself to "Open WEP". I really need to have WPA or WPA2 in Linux as that's what I run 99% of the time. Do I need to buy a new WiFi card? If so, I need one with an external antenna port like my Orinoco Gold card has. I have not yet tried your methods because I was busy trying to use a script called "mencvcd" which can supposedly reduce a DVD to a VCD or SVCD. This script can be found here: http://svn.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/trunk/TOOLS/mencvcd I ran the script on my ISO file of the DVD (movie.iso). I used the following command line: mencvcd movie movie.iso -noburn -vfr 4 -vnorm n The mencvcd script ran for almost 3 hours, but did not complete due to some kind of error, message copied below. mplex: invalid option -- m All I got so far is two files: movie.mpa - 186300708 bytes movie.mpv - 156966627 bytes One file is the audio and one file is the video. I guess this is where the process stopped. I had expected to get an ISO file suitable for burning to a CD at a later time. If anyone has successfully used the mencvcd script I would to know details. I loaded libdvdcss2 when I first installed 2008.0, and the DVD plays well. There must be another reason for the error message. It doesn't seem to be causing any problem, I was just curious about it.

The current pixels is 720x480, I plan to reduce that as needed, perhaps 360x240. The DVD has some subtitles I want on the copy. There are 6 .VOB files on this DVD which seem to be MPEG video. There are also 2 .BUP and 2 .IFO files, I've no idea what they are.

I have some DVDs, they are about 4.2 GB each when I copy them to ISO files. These are not copyrighted DVDs. I want to shrink them down so that each one fits on a 700mb CD. What program can do this?

Thanks for this tip! I have been living without any sound from pidgin, but after adding aplay -q %s in the command window pidgin now makes sounds. Does anyone know if this bug has been reported yet? I hope the next Mandriva CD (2008.1) will not have this bug. Has anyone checked the latest release candidate to see if pidgin sound works out of the box?

I am planing to make a local repository on a removable USB drive. This will be used to update several computers without need for repeated downloading from remote sources. I will be adding the local repository using urpmi.addmedia as explained in the urpmi.addmedia man page. I may have read somewhere that urpmi.addmedia will create a list of available packages for rpms found in local sources, not like remote sources where a list is needed. Will this work? If I put the Gizmo rpm in with the other rpms on my local media, will Gizmo then become one of the available packages shown in the graphical Rpmdrake software management tool?

I have recently switched to Mandriva Linux and wish to install the Gizmo SIP phone software. What's the best way to do that? I didn't find Gizmo in the repositories, can I request it be added? Gizmo can be downloaded from http://gizmo5.com/pc/download/linux/. I suppose Mandriva will use the Gizmo RPM Install Package, and I am somewhat familiar with urpmi, but I'm not sure how to install something that's not from the repository.

In fact the installed version and the live CD version of xorg.conf (when running on this computer) are the same in that section, as copied below. Which repo should be used to add packages to an installed 2008-spring-rc1? Are 2008.0 repos OK for 2008.1 releases? I may be reinstalling Mandriva after my first attempt ended up a little weird. ( see this post if you want to read more about that: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=52424 ) I don't usually try beta software but as there is a release candidate I might go for mandriva-linux-2008-spring-rc1-one-KDE-int-cdrom-i586.iso I'm just not sure which repository (if any) can be used with 2008 rc1.

I am not sure about the ATA driver. I installed from the 2008.0 Powerpack DVD but didn't do anything special about the video driver. When installing from the DVD I also gave it one supplemental online source for packages, in case there was a newer version of some packages since the DVD was made. After installation I updated all packages to latest versions and added (mostly from plf) libdvdcss2 and win32-codes and other multimedia stuff. I never tested playing DVDs until the end. The computer has 512mb RAM. Unless someone has a better idea, I plan to reinstall from the CD version and test play some DVDs at various points along the way.
