  1. I downloaded the RPM and chose to install that. I got the following error message:

Some requested packages cannot be installed:

    glibc-devel-2.9-0.20081113.5mnb2.i586 (due to unsatisfied kernel-headers)

At least now I know what the problem is.

  2. I see the Phoronix test suite in Software Managment, but when I try to install it, I just get the following error message:

I'm using Mandriva 2009.1 KDE PWP, BTW.

Sorry, the following package cannot be selected:

    - phoronix-test-suite-1.8.1-1mdv2009.1.noarch

  3. I've always installed Opera from the rpm on Opera's website. Never had a problem. For Mandriva 2009.1 you should get the QT4 version. The QT4 version can be hard to find if you don't know where to look. I was using Opera 9.64 QT4 but just upgraded to Opera 10 beta QT4 today (I uninstalled 9.64 first). Works like a charm. Not so sure how the 64-bit versions work with 64-bit Mandriva.

  4. I posted an idea, but I did not like the process. On the bottom where I presume it says "Reply" or "Preview", the buttons are in French - even though the rest of the page is in English. I took a guess, and my idea was sent (or posted).

Also, there is a choice of radio buttons: One, Free, or Powerpack. I wanted my idea to apply to all three versions, but the posting mechanism made me choose 1 (of the 3 options), and 1 only. :wall:

  5. I guess I'm stupid, because I don't see a link on that page to post one's idea! :wall:

EDIT: I got it now. I had to click on the Authenticate link first to log in. Why don't they just say: "Log In"?

I see Contribute to Mandriva Ideas hidden at the bottom right corner of the page, but when I click on it, the entire page is in French! After using Google Language tools on that link, it does not seem like a posting link either.

Yes there is a sorting feature - but no option to sort by date.

  6. I dunno if it's me, but I don't seem to be able to vote? There's nothing to click, just results.....

You have to go to the second (or last) page to vote. Scroll down to the end of the comments to choose the next page.

    Another for Mandriva here. :D

  7. I had a problem several years ago burning CD's reliably. I also discovered that Verbatim disks made in Taiwwan worked best - at least for me. However I found the Verbatim disks made in India were garbage. Turns out that the Verbatim CD's from India used a different dye than the ones from Taiwan.

Interesting that the DVD's exhibit similar behavior. Based on my previous experience with CD's, I've been using Verbatim DVD's almost exclusively - with great results.

  8. I can abide the fact that they would stop updating drivers for a series of legacy GPUs. I cannot abide the fact that the existing driver will not work with Linux from here on out. The fact that Catalyst 4 does not support my 4 year old laptop bothers me, but not so much. The fact that Catalyst 3 will not work with X Server from here on out bothers me alot.

Selling and replacing my laptop is not an option just now.

  9. I had Vista running running for a year and a half before installing anti-virus software and despite being connected to the internet 24/7 still no viruses.

To be fair though, Vista does come with Defender and I use UAC. Older versions aren't as secure out-of-the-box.

    I can believe it.

It can make a big difference as well if you keep your software fully up-to-date and patched for security vulnerabilities. A number of Windows users do not do this.

  10. Yes but, it (Catalyst 4) does not support many cards that were supported by the previous driver. Also, the new X server 1.6 does not support the previous Catalyst 3 drivers. A lose-lose situation for many of us.

The Linux ATI Catalystâ„¢ driver will only be supported in Linux distributions prior to February 2009 for the legacy products listed above.

  11. I really know very litte about PCLinuxOS - only what I have read from a few threads on the Mandriva forums. Also, you know they say that hindsight is 20-20.

So as an outsider, this is what I think. Texstar should have let the distro go as the developers and community had developed it. If it was not well received, then he should have stepped in with his ideas. If he does not like the current iteration that the developers created, then he should apply his ideas to the next release. Even so, he could still upset the developers if he takes off in a different direction going forward.

When Texstar decided to take his hiatus, he should have clearly spelled out what would happen when he came back (that is *assuming* he did not clearly spell this out). That way the developers could not claim to be blindsided (if they were).

    My 2 cents. :puter:

P.S. The 'PC' emoticon (:pc:) does not work.

  12. And don't use the skip list or don't disable the update checks as that's just a nasty workaround that hides the problem and it means you won't get notified of real updates anymore!

Well, that's your opinion, but I don't fully agree with it. Depending upon one's connection speed, waiting for MdkOnline to complete can be a real pain.

Everyone keeps saying how secure Linux is - and if that is so, not applying an update the instant it is released should not matter that much. Checking every few days or once a month should be just fine (IMO). After all, that insecure MS software is only updated once a month except in a few circumstances.

Regarding security: Adobe Reader has been released as version 9, and a significant security update 'version 9.1' has also been released. Mandriva still only offers version 8.x. What's up with that???

Regarding putting this particular update, libxulrunner1.9, into the skip.list file: I guess it depends on whether the OP can get it to install or not. Of course the preferred solution would be to get the update.

  13. If I unticked "Always launch at startup" wouldn't that stop all notifications?

Yes, but you can still choose to manually check for updates from MCC.

Another option is to add the offending program to the skip.list file. Edit the /etc/urpmi/skip.list file. File itself shows example of how to do this. Leave off the # symbol. The # symbol is used for comments.

  14. Currently on 2008.1, but I do plan to upgrade to 2009.1 if the Live CD tests out OK. If I really like it, I may get the PowerPack version.

A once a year upgrade is often enough for me. Takes too much time to iron out the glitches and get everything working as it should (such as my hardware hotkeys).

  15. I unfortunately have a pdf which requires a username and password to gain access, but possibly even checks this across the internet (have to test trying to open it without connection to internet), so unfortunately, I cannot print or do anything else with mine:(

I want to, but I cannot it seems.

I know what you mean. My wife has access to textbook chapters in pdf form from her online university. She can download them, but to open them she has to have an internet connection to verify her user name and password.

  16. But, what if I want to do something like put a link in the middle of a sentence? Does it make it easy to change the text?

Sure, just hit the preview button, then edit the text. Example below just tested as a preview at the Window7 Forums link I posted above. I copy and pasted the post window below.

This is test 1: PHPbb vs Invisionboard - MandrivaUsers.org and how it works.

This is test 2: PHPbb vs Invisionboard - MandrivaUsers.org Edited same link with edited text.
