  1. Yes, I checked the user name, password, workgroup, subnet mask, they are all the same.

However, when I did "rpm -qa samba" it returned with a prompt but nothing else.

I went into the Mandrake control center and look under software management and found these were installed:

    Name: samba-server

    Version: 2.2.7a-9.2mdk

    Size: 3720 KB

    Name: samba-client

    Version: 2.2.7a-9.2mdk

    Size: 3025 KB

    Name: samba-common

    Version: 2.2.7a-8mdk

    Size: 10531 KB

    Thanks

  2. I used webmin (https://localhost:10000) to configure all my samba connections, I checked the /etc/smb.conf file and it looked OK.

    I included 192.168.1.22 in /etc/hosts

all my other Windows PCs can see the share folder //192/168.1.22/temp, I just can't see it from within Lunix using Nautilus And all windows PCs can see my shared directories in Linux, frustrating...

Thanks for your help so far.

  3. I shared the folder "test" in W2K machine name is "moon", IP address is 192.168.1.22

    I added "192.168.1.22 moon" into /etc/hosts

Then I went to the Linux machine, launched Nautilus, in "go to" I typed "smb://moon/test" it returned error

"smb://moon/test" is not a valid location, please check spelling and try again.

BTW, I can ping 192.168.1.22 from my Linux machine no problem

    Thanks

  4. Thanks for the pointer, much appreciated.

After reading the FAQ, I am however still a bit confused as to how I can see Windows shared folders from Linux, what commands do I use? Anything I need to do in conf file to include the windows shared directory?

I followed the instruction by typing smb:/ in Nautilus but I got an error message telling me that is not a valid location.

I have no problem seeing Linux shared directories from Windows file explorer using SAMBA.

  5. I recently purchased a Buffalo Linkstation NAS drive which is now serving as a file storage for my 4 home Windows XP PCs, everyone in the house saves all work to this 250G external disk which is formatted for NTFS/DOS

In my home network, I also have a PC running Mandrake 9.x linux with 1x60G and 1x250G drives, we use this linux machine mainly for firewall and other services which requires 24/7 reliability. I have SAMBA running and all my PCs can see both my M.Linux 250G drives.

My question: I would like to setup a cron job to backup all files in the NAS drive to one of the Linux 250G drive everyday. What command should I use in M. Linux to achieve this and what do I have to do to make M. Linux to see the NAS drive which is setup for windows file system.

Thanks for your help in advance

  6. Thanks for all who replied. Sounds like it would be best for me to wait a bit and then start from scratch with the latest version.

Here is my other question, I have 3 drives in my server, 2 identical data drives (250G), both running ext3 fs, one is a complete backup of the other. Mandrake is loaded on a separate drive (20G). If I simply re-install latest Mandrake on the 20G drive, when I am all done, will it automatically recognize the 2 data drives and the data in them?

    Thanks

  7. definitely go with a clean install to go from 9.1. i did an upgrade from 2005 to 2006 via urpmi without any problems. note that urpmi --auto-select will not install the kernel, so you also have to do a separate kernel install.

Does clean install means I have to re-setup everything I am currently using? Samba, PAN, Azureus, Mozilla etc.

I am using this as a file server mostly so there are backup cron jobs setup and 8 users using it, minimum disruption is preferred.

    Any more advices?

    Thanks

  8. I often VNC from a W2K machine to my Mandrake linux server, when the desktop is set to use GNOME, I have no problem, but if the desktop is set to use KDE, it hung with an hour glass in blue screen.

Here is what I got from /var/log/mdkkdm.log

  9. Just thought I post to close this thread.

Picture viewing is OK now after I reloaded the Java using j2re-1_4_2_05-linux-i586.rpm.

To switch desktop when you are using VNC or X windows, you need to create a file .desktop in your home directory, the file should contain one line :

DESKTOP=KDE or GNOME or whatever desktop you decide to use

Once you switched, remember to restart the vncserver.

The .desktop file overwrites the system default /etc/sysconfig/desktop file

  10. Hi

I have been struggling with this problem for a while, hope some of you out

there can help, basically, I would like to access a linux file server using

VNC client and run KDE desktop, currently, I can connect if I use GNOME

desktop, if I use KDE, it just give me a blank screen.

The following is my network configuration:

Server: Compaq AP550 (as Linux file Server in a network closet, no keyboard,

    no mouse attached)

OS on server : Mandrake 9.1

    XFree86 : 4.3.0

    Network : 100M Ethernet

Clients : W2K connect to Compaq AP550 linux server using VNC client (GNOME

    desktop runs fine)

Problem : If I attach a mouse and keyboard to the linux server, select KDE as

desktop and login, KDE runs perfectly, however, when I try accessing the

server using VNC client, GNOME desktop runs but KDE desktop will not come

up, it gives me a blank screen but logs the following in .xsession-errors:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":1.0".

Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":1.0".

I read many articles concerning issues with NVIDIA graphics card so I

included part of XF86Config-4 files for your review, I even recently tried commenting out the LOAD "GLX" line but the problem persists.

If I VNC to the server using GNOME desktop, open a terminal window andtype

"startkde", I get pretty well the same error messages.

    Questions:

. How do I fix that? I would like to use KDE since I prefer it better than

    GNOME

. Which file is being used XF86Config or XF86Config-4, do I need both?

. If I make changes to XF86Config or XF86Config-4, do I have to reboot for

    it to take effect?

This really puzzled me, any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

  11. Can someone please tell me how to switch from Gnome to using KDE graphics environment, is there a file somewhere I can do the edit and switch, the server I am using is in a network closet and I just want to switch my profile.

Also, in Mozilla, when I click on some pictures, it comes up with a separate window but with text but no picture. When I right click on the picture, it came up with an error message "Function disabled: Copyright text, images and code"

    Thanks in advance

  12. Unfortunately, I am not sure how to change the file association.

As for the error message, thanks for the suggestion to run in a terminal window, I was trying hard to figure out how to see error messages. Here is what I got:

    sh-2.05b$ kwrite

Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":1.0".

I am not familiar what the messages meant though, anu help is much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

  13. I have a Linux file server (Mandrake 9.1) sitting in a network closet with no keyboard and mouse, I use Win32 VNC viewer to access from my W2K desktop so I can setup cron jobs, start Mozilla to download files etc. Most of the stuff I want to do works fine except when try to launch kwrite or kate, all I got is opening screen flashes and disappears.

I also cannot view any text file in Nautilus, when I click "Open" all I get is "Application "nautilus-text-view" (process 1901) has crashed

    due to a fatal error.

    (Floating point exception)"

Seemed to me the system does not know where to display..

I launch the vncserver in a linux command window "vncserver :1"

Then I use vncviewer with 192.168.1.xx:1 to launch from W2K desktop to access Linux server

    Please help.. Thanks

  14. Happy Holidays all,

Would really like to know if there is a way to setup energy saving in Mandrake 9.1 on a desktop server similar to "Energy Saving features" in Windows 2000, i.e. turn off harddrive etc.

Here is what my server config is:

. Mandrake 9.1 on a 1Ghz Compaq desktop, BIOS has power save features (not turned on)

. 2x 80G drives (data disks) and 1x 8G SCSI drive (system disk)

. Act as a file server only for 6 users (mostly during office hours) - 100 Mbps

. No aplication run from server

. Server backs up all files between 2 drives every day

. Server sits in a network closet without keyboard and monitor

Since most of the time the server is on idle, would really like to turn off the hard drives & CPU to save power but the key feature needs to be "wake on LAN access" with no manual intervention

Any help, suggestions or comments are appreciated

    Thanks

  16. I have a Linux server sitting in a network closet but from time to time would like to be able to view some video without sound, I installed real player 8 but it came up with "cannot open audio device, another application may be using it" and will not play clip.

I don't need sound, how can I get around this? I think I have a CL Sound Blaster AudioPCI 128 but cannot verify since this system is a server and I cannot shut down to open up and find out, but I know for sure there is a sound card in there.

    Please help. Thanks

  17. Yes, the file bookmarks.xml exists, I run in gnome, don't know how to switch to kde or ICEwm, I thnk it may have something to do with diaplay :1 not available since my server is in a network closet and I am controlling it through VNC.

Since I VNC using :1 display, may be konqueror or kwrite also wants to write to :1 and cannot do so...

    I don't know, just puzzled..

    thanks

  18. Hi,

Can someone explain and help with this please. Same thing happens with Kwrite too.

    Thanks

  19.

Please help, here is the scenario:

. telnet from W2K PC to MD9.1 server

. login and issue command "vncserver :1"

. from W2K PC, start VNC viewer on "192.168.x.x:1"

Gnome desktop appears and all works well including Mandrake control center except "Konqueror", "Kdwrite", they seemed to start and then nothing happens. Puzzled me..

Need to use VNC because Linux server is down stairs in a network closet and I prefer to use GUI to interact.

    Any pointer is appreciated.
